Week after week, sma ll number on parade or large, he was always there with the keenest sens e of duty. Many who rose to commissioned rank owed what they knew, and w ere able to do, to him. We knew that he was too good an instructor of r ecruits to be spared easily and wise heads at headquarters knew that th is was his special work. He was there on parade on August 4th 1914, and h is brave heart was always ready for what was askedof him, and more - " a heart of a man in his breast". As we watched that valliant struggle, t he assertion of independence, the fearlessnessof standing alone during t hose dreadful years following demobilisation, we were priveleged to see t he real man and to understand him. He was a Vicar's Warden. Many a time h e has been namelessly used at an illustration of what a man has done. O ur hearts go out in love andsympathy to all who are his. "May he rest i n peace"
