The name board depicted a mitre as worn by the Bishop's possibly after the fact that we do have a Bishop of Burnley, it may well have been called an Inn in 1881 but as always been described as "The Mitre Hotel" ever since I can remember it. At that time it would be one of the better hotels in the town being only about 400 yards from one of the town's two railway stations and would provide accommodation for travelers etc. Also at that time Burnley was a garrison town and the barracks were only a quarter of a mile away and The Mitre being a higher class establishment would be frequented by the officers.
