Janet McIsaacs and James Kemp were married in Scotland.1793,2258 James Kemp left Comrie in Scotland at the age of 55 and emigrated to South Australia, on board the 'William Hammond', arriving in Port Adelaide in 1854. With him was his wife Janet, his sons Alexander (24), James (20) and Peter (16), and daughters Jane (13), Charlotte (8) and Margaret (22). Alexander's wife Margaret was also with them. The passenger list shows the adult males as farm labourers, the adult females as domestic servants and that their passage was free. As soon as they arrived they left for Hill River Station near Clare where they were indentured to work in return for their passage. This was at the time of the gold rush in Victoria and there was a shortage of labour in the new colony. A first hand description by Charlotte (see Charlotte Hewitt Obituary) tells of their journey to Port Adelaide and then to Clare and back. After six months James and two of his sons went south to Currency Creek to select land while the others moved to Clare. James purchased a lease at 10 pounds per six months over Block 23 in the Currency Creek Special Survey from a Henry Grainger, merchant of Pudding Lane, London. Under the Special Survey system, London businessmen would put up the money for surveys and purchase large acreages cheaply that they could sell off. The original conveyance document is filed in the Lands Title Office in Application 3683. The rest of the family soon left Clare for Currency Creek where they established a farm named 'Janefield'. The town of Currency Creek, despite its impressive size as it was originally surveyed, was never actually settled as a town with most of the allotments held as broad acres . This may have to do with the fact that Goolwa which is nearby, thrived as a port for the trade on the River Murray. A weekly postal service ran from Adelaide to Goolwa and a tramway had been opened between Goolwa and Port Elliott so goods could be transported and loaded on to ships for Adelaide and overseas. Later in 1869 a railway was established over the actual Currency Creek linking Strathalbyn. This area is in one of the higher rainfall areas of South Australia and near to Lake Alexandrina and the mouth of the Murray River. In 1863, James Kemp was able to purchase 'Janefield' and was issued Certificate of Title Volume 38 Folio 21. The original property is now (in 2004) part of the Middleton Winery on Flagstaff Hill Road and vineyards have oblierated any sign of the original settlement. The only possible evidence is an obscure row of stones that look like they marked a path to something on the northern boundary. Some of the original trees are still there, particularly along the road, giving an indication of how much hard work it must have been for them to clear for crops. The property remained in the Kemp family until 1957. Mrs Kemp had died in 1859 and James died in 1882. He is buried in the Currency Creek cemetery, just above the creek. No headstone remains but he is acknowledged on a plaque listing the unmarked graves. The original headstone for Peter Kemp who died in 1907 is still there. James Kemp (Junior) James was born in Monevaird, Scotland and came to South Australia in 1854 with his family on the ship, 'William Hammond'. In 1855 the family moved to Currency Creek where his father had leased land. In 1864 he married Elizabeth Southwell at Hindmarsh Valley where her parents lived. The Southwell family had arrived in South Australia in 1848 on the 'Princess Royal' from Perth in Scotland. The 1866 Year Book lists James as a farmer of Currency Creek. At some stage they moved to Yorke Peninsular as their daughter Charlotte was born at Minlaton in 1880. In 1883 James was granted sections 17w and 1 in the Hundred of Wauraltee. The property was sold in 1886 and they moved to the West Wimmera in Victoria and took up a farm at Woorak West near Nhill. His wife died in 1905 and in 1908 he left the farm and moved to Nelson Street, Nhill with his daughter Charlotte. James died in 1919 and is buried in the Woorak cemetery.
