The Haskin, Haskins etc surname!
I am trying to connect the various Haskins families in Upper Canada during the 1700-1800's; and to discover the origins of those loyalist families that moved up into Canada through the Northern States. I would welcome any amendments or additions to the information that I have tried to gather together.
There seems to be a lot of good information sharing through various email lists and surname bulletin boards - but no co-ordinated efforts seem to be made to gather and organize the information that is discussed. You see different individuals asking about the same families at different times. I would like to see some sort of compilation of available information. This is my own weak effect at attempting to do so with the resources that I have at hand.
My Haskins gedcom 'project'
I realize my attempt to gather together a vast number of families and individuals would not be seen as a legimate form of research. For one thing, regardless of the spelling of the surnames I encounter, I am entering all individuals under the HASKINS spelling - otherwise there is not much reason to group them all into one file - I am attempting to match up family lines. I have found, also, that even within family branches and generations it is not unusal to see spelling differences.
It was compiled using information found at various sources - surname boards, LDS site, census and church records etc. I am trying to keep things 'centered' by entering those families that seemed to come to Upper Canada during the same time period or were located in the same area of Northern American states where some of the families came into Canada as 'Loyalists' to the British King.
- There has been no proof discovered yet as to the origins of the 2 main Haskins families who arrived in Upper Canada during the late 1700's as a result of the Americian Revolution; some have been recognized as United Empire Loyalists (UEL) [they remained loyal to the British Crown, unlike their colonial brethern and were welcomed into the still British colony of Canada].
- Some researchers assume there may be some connection between these 2 main 'Canadian' Haskins families. They arrived during the same time period and there is a slight similarity in naming patterns (both have son Nicholas and daughter Tabitha).
- Other researchers are of the opinion that Abial/Abiel Haskins was descended from the William
- Abial Haskins (spouse, Judah Carey) was a United Empire Loyalist who claimed land in Augusta Township, Leeds County, Ontario (a 1785 -1787 survey shows lot 13 Con 4; lots 13, 23 and 27 Conc 6; Lot 16 Conc 8.) Abial and his son, Nicholas, were listed as part of a Loyalist Ranger group that recruited primarily in the states of New York, Vermont and Connecticut.
-
Joseph Haskins (spouse, Elizabeth ?). His father Nicholas was entitled, according to the 1785 -1787 survey, to Lot 31, Conc 7 and Lot 3, Conc 8, Augusta Twp, Leeds County. Joseph lived on lot 25 Conc A Wolford Twp, with 24 acres cleared on 29 Jul 1797, and received his patent for the lot on 17 May 1802. (This is the family from which my mother is descended.)

within the gedcom file:
- addresses within brackets such as <Sudbury,Ont> indicate that the individual was 'of' that location, actual place of birth or origin unknown; also did the same in 'place of death' with last known location.
- estimated dates of birth - I estimated everyone married at age 20 and usually children as born the year of marriage (regardless as number of children) - I'm just inputting an approximate date rather than have hundreds of individuals with an 'unknown' listing. spouses have been input with an estimated dob the same as their partner.
- estimated dates - I have used 'est' for my own estimations. 'abt' is generally information from elsewhere.
- 'estimated' marriage dates - I input 'bef' and the year of birth of the first child
- 'estimated' death dates - if more than one spouse - I input 'bef' the date of the next marriage
These are the 15 Haskins families within the
