NICHOLS, Alvia Trowbridge
OBITUARY OF T. A. NICHOLS
Trobridge Alvie Nichols was born Dec. 21, 1852, near Galena, Ill. Hemoved with
his parents to Bootheat, (sic) Wis., when a boy.
He was united in marriage to Hattie Sorn, Aug. 13, 1871, and to thisunion were
born six children: Mrs. A. D. Page, Grand Island, Nebr.;Mrs. Zada Sutley, St.
Marys; A. F. Nichols, LaJunta, Colo.; Fred ofPayette, Idaho; W. F. and Morris
of St. Marys.
In Nov. 1882, they moved to Aurora, Nebr., residing there until thefall of
1892. They then moved to Kansas. Sixteen years ago they cameto St. Marys.
Death claimed Mr. Nichols March 20 at the age of 76. His companionpreceded him
13 years ago.
He was converted and united with the Baptist Church at Woodland, Kan.,on Oct.
29, 1901. As there was not a church of his church in St.Marys, he attended
Sunday School and Worship at the Methodist Church.He was a good neighbor, a
kind father and a friend of all who knewhim.
He is survived by his six children; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Smith andMrs. Ada
Kline of Aurora, Nebr., and one brother, Asa Nichols ofOregon City, Ore.; also
16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by the pastor from the MethodistChurch Friday
afternoon, March 22. Interment was in St. MarysCemetery. Source: St. Marys

Nicholson, Ivan R.
Cossayuna Lake -- Ivan R. Nicholson, 90, of Cossayuna, formerly ofEast Street,
Fort Edward, went into the arms of the Lord Monday, June20, 2005, at the home
of his son Gene Nicholson in Hudson Falls.
Born on Feb. 27, 1915, in Kingsbury, he was the son of the lateCharles and
Ruth [Colvin] Nicholson.
Ivan grew up working on a farm, and then worked at Griffin LumberCompany for
15 years. He owned and operated his own cabinet businesson Mill Street in Fort
Edward and was one of the first toprofessionally use Formica in cabinet
making. He then went on to ownand operate Nicholson's Feed Service on East
Street in Fort Edward for45 years.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Tennessee.
Ivan enjoyed fishing and gardening and loved politics and familygenealogy.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Constance[Crannell]
Nicholson, who died March 21, 2001. His daughter, BarbaraSabato; his sisters,
Florence Austin and Iona Palmer; and hisbrothers, Charles Jr., William,
Frederick, Clifford, and HoraceNicholson, also predeceased him.
Survivors include his children: Gene Nicholson and his wife, Linda, ofHudson
Falls, Phillip Nicholson and his wife, Pat, of Hartford, DavidNicholson and
his wife, Betty, of Fort Edward, Thomas Nicholson andhis wife, Darlene, of
Albany, his son-in-law, Charles Sabato, ofCrosswicks, N.J.; his
brother-in-law, Cuthbert Crannell and his wife,Lillian, of Glens Falls, his
sisters-in-law, Leona Nicholson of GlenLake and Madge Nicholson of Sunnyside
East; his sister, Betty Havensof South Glens Falls; 16 grandchildren, 22
great-grandchildren, andseveral nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday,June 21,
2005, at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward.www.kilmers.com

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 22,2005, at the
funeral home.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 10 at the Benz MemorialChapel in
Sioux Falls for Garrett (Pip) Nies, 66, of Sioux Falls, whodied at his home
last Friday.
Mr. Nies was born Aug. 28, 1902 at Platte.  He married Lillian Skolaat Valley
Springs on Sept. 22, 1954.
He is survived by his widow; a brother, Henry Nies, Sioux Falls, andtwo

Jefferson Niles arrived on the 4th of March and built alittle shanty, on the
south bank of the Pecatonica, near the presentsite of the village of Ridott .
. . . the whole of the district,including Silver Creek and Ridott Townships,
was then known as SilverCreek Precinct and so remained until the passage of
the law providingfor township organization. . . . That spring a large number
of newsettlers came . . . . David Niles*, Asa Nichols and others."

*David Niles, Jr., was the brother of Jefferson Niles and of Andrew'sfather,
Leonard. Another brother, Sanford Niles, and the family of asister, Clarissa
Niles Marks (Mrs. John), also resided in StephensonCounty. Asa Nichols was the
husband of David Jr's daughter, Rosella.

The fourth of March, 1836, is set as the date of the first settlementof
Ridott. Andrew Jackson and Jefferson Niles locating in the townshipon that
date. If there is anything in names they should have been oldline democrats as
were many of the settlers in those days.

March 10th, 1830 [sic, 1839], Thomas J. Turner, J. P., performed thefirst
marriage ceremony by which was united A. J. Niles and Nancy A.Farwell in the
residence of her uncle Eldridge Farwell.

Death of a Pioneer
A. J. Niles Expires at his Home in Pecatonica
A.J. NILES father of Homer Niles, of Ridott township, Republicancandidate for
county treasurer, died Tuesday afternoon at his home inPecatonica from the
effects of a cancer. Mr. Niles was one of theearliest settlers of Stephenson
county, but removed to Pecatonica someyears ago. He was born in Ashtabula
county, Ohio, in 1815; came toIllinois in 1835, and settled in Ridott
township, this county. Heentered land in the timber near the Pecatonica river,
and afterwardssold this and moved out onto the prairie and bought 120 acres of
land,which he improved, and afterwards purchased a number of acres oftimber
land, and was known as a successful farmer. The winter of1835-36 he was in the
mines at Galena, but returned to his farm thefollowing spring.
During his residence in Ridott township, Mr. Niles held the offices ofjustice
of the peace, assessor, collector, and was three times electedto the office of
supervisor, and was also elected to several officeswhile a resident of
Pecatonica, to which city he removed some twelveyears ago. He was a man of the
strictest integrity, and leaves anhonored name. He was married in Ridott
township in 1839 to Miss NancyA. Farwell, who died several years ago. Mr.
Niles was the father ofeight children but only five of them survive him, three
sons and twodaughters.
The funeral will be held from the family residence in Pecatonica at 11o'clock
tomorrow morning, and the body will be interred in the Farwellcemetery in
Ridott township.
