OBITUARY: "The Hartford Courant" [Hartford, Hartford Co., CT], 5 Dec1895:
OLIVER THOMPSON.
Death of a Well-Known Citizen of West Avon
Oliver Thompson, a prominent resident of Avon, died at his homeTuesday at 1 o'clock in the
morning, Among the older people in WestAvon few are more widely known. He was born there August 5,
1827, andhad always lived on the same farm, where he began to take charge ofhis father's business
at the age of 25. He was married June 3, 1858,to Margaret Colvin, a woman of fine qualities and
great strength ofcharacter. He bought the homestead of his father, Captain ThaddeusThompson and
built a new house and a large barn and other buildings, which are models of convenience and
comfort.
In politics he was an earnest republican. In 1863 the republicanselected him representative, which
office he creditably filled. CaptainThaddeus Thompson and Oliver Thompson, his son, were
life-longsubscribers to "The Courant." Mr. Thompson joined the church at theage of 23 under the
pastorate of the Rev. Joel Grant. He was strictlyhonest and honorable and always ready to help
those in trouble. Thechurch and its welfare were a part of his responsibility. During thelast six
months of his life his many neighbors and friends gave proofof their gratitude and sympathy by
sending fruit, flowers and manyother tokens of regard. His quiet and successful life is
aninspiration to boys on the farm all through Connecticut, showing whata man of purpose can
accomplish there. Two sons survive him, Howard, who is married and lives on an adjoining farm, and
Joseph, who hastaken charge of his father's farm and business during Mr. Thompson'slong and
painful sickness. Joseph and Howard are following theirfather's pursuit in the wood and lumber
business.
"The Hartford Courant" [Hartford, Hartford Co., CT], 6 Dec 1895:
Funeral of Oliver Thompson
The funeral of Oliver Thompson of West Avon took place yesterday athis home, and, in spite of the
severe snow storm, was largelyattended. After the services at the house the local lodge of
Masons,of which he was a charter member, took charge and conducted servicesat the grave.

Leading and Prominent Citizensand Illustrious Dead," by Robert F. Eldredge [S. J. Clarke
PublishingCo., Chicago, 1905], p.p. 386-387:
CASSIUS W. THORINGTON
The Thorington farm, which is the home of the subject of this review, has been in possession of the
family through three successivegenerations, having been entered from the government by
thegrandfather of C. W. Thorington. Elijah Thorington was one of thefirst settlers of Macomb
county, coming to this state when it waslargely an undeveloped wilderness. He secured the land as
a claim andbegan the development of a farm, which in turn came into thepossession of his son,
George W. Thorington, who was born and rearedupon that place. Later he was married and upon the
old homestead, onthe 13th of August, 1878, his son, Cassius W. Thorington, was born. There were
also two daughters: Lydia, now the wife of Charles Sykes, aprominent dairyman of the township of
Romeo; and Liela, at home.
C. W. Thorington was reared upon the old homestead in the usual mannerof farmer lads and when he
had mastered the branches of learningtaught in the public schools he attended the Romeo high
school. Heassisted in the improvement, operation and management of the old homefarm until 1903,
when his father retired from active business life andremoved to Romeo and the son took charge of
the farm which he nowmanages. He is recognized as one of the enterprising and energeticyoung
farmers of the locality and his labors are well attended withgratifying results. The place is well
stocked and in connection withgeneral farming and stock-raising Mr. Thorington has for the past
sixyears acted as an agent for the Page woven wire fence.
On the 18th of March, 1903, Mr. Thorington was united in marriage toMiss Lillian Hulett, who was
born February 19, 1881, in Armadatownship, Macomb county, and spent her girlhood days there and
inRomeo township. There is one daughter by this union, Mildred, bornJune 30, 1904.
Politically Mr. Thorington is a stalwart advocate of democraticprinciples, but without aspiration
for office, his time and energiesbeing concentrated upon the upbuilding of a profitable business.
Heis, however, never remiss in the duties of citizenship and endorsesevery movement for the
general good. He belongs to Romeo Grange and isdeeply interested in all that pertains to
agricultural progress. Hestands for advancement in all walks of life and is a
typicalrepresentative of the great and growing west.

"Past and Present of Macomb County, Michigan, Together withBiographical Sketches of Many of Its
Leading and Prominent Citizensand Illustrious Dead," by Robert F. Eldredge [S. J. Clarke
PublishingCo., Chicago, 1905], p. 419:
C. C. THORINGTON
C. C. Thorington, a member of the law firm of Thorington & McKay, is aprominent member of the
legal profession of Macomb county, activelyengaged in practice in Romeo. He is a native son of
this county, having been born in Washington township, Jul 16, 1864. His father,James M. Thorington,
was also born in this county on the same farmwhere occurred the birth of his son. The grandfather,
JamesThorington, was one of the first settlers of this portion of thestate, locating here in the
early '30s. He secured wild land, which hecleared, and thereon he built a house and opened up a
farm. James M.Thorington was reared to manhood on the old farm homestead and afterarriving at
years of maturity he wedded Mary Starkweather, who wasalso born in Macomb county. Mr. Thorington
is now a well-to-do andprosperous farmer of Washington township, having devoted his entirelife to
agricultural pursuits and so directed his efforts as to winprosperity because of his diligence,
perseverance and capablemanagement.
C. C. Thorington was reared in Macomb county and educated in the homeschools and the high school
at Romeo. He afterward pursued a course inthe law department of Michigan University at Ann Arbor
and wasgraduated with the class of 1893. He then opened a law office inRomeo, where he has since
been in active practice for more than adecade, and from the beginning he has been successful,
having secureda large clientage, which many an older practitioner might well envy.He is quick to
master all the intricacies of a case and grasp alldetails, at the same time losing sight of none
of the essential pointsupon which the decision of every case finally turns. As a speaker heis
fluent, forcible, earnest, logical and convincing. Mr. Thoringtonis also a member of the Farmers'
Mutual Insurance Company of Macombcounty and is its treasurer at the present time.
In his political views Mr. Thorington has always been a stalwartrepublican, taking an active
interest in the local work of the party, and he was elected and served on the village board for one
or twoterms. He was also for one term its president and is now the villageattorney, a position
which he has filled for five years. He has, however, never been a politician in the sense of office
seeking, preferring rather to give his time and energies to his profession, yethe has faithfully
fulfilled all the duties of citizenship that havedevolved upon him whether in official or other
relations.
Mr. Thorington was married, in Romeo, in 1891, to Miss JeanGreenshields, a daughter of Dr. William
Greenshields, who isrepresented elsewhere in this work. They now have one son, William J.The
parents are members of the Congregational church of Romeo, and Mr.Thorington is prominent in the
Masonic fraternity, having taken thedegrees of the lodge, chapter and commandery in this city. He
is alsoa member of the Mystic Shrine at Detroit. He is one of the active andpublic-spirited
citizens of Romeo, thoroughly identified with itspeople, its necessities and its prosperity, and
he enjoys theconfidence and esteem of the community in a high degree.

Where the Maranville family was in 1880 is so far unknown. On the 1900census, Robert Maranvill

dead. In 1900, Flora Moranville [sic], 68, b. Jun 1831,was living in the household of her cousin,
Stukley Downs, in HamptonTown, Washington Co., NY [E.D. #131, Sheet 4A]. Although she claimedto be
married, something seems to have happened here.

visited [or lived with] these folks, censuses would haveindicated that she died soon after 1870.
Of course, she wasn'tanybody's sister but Lucy's first cousin. One would think they'd haveknown
her first name.
