Could not find the family in the 1920 US Census.

The following information was sent by Tina Stiles. The originalinformation
had been given to Tina by Dorothy Oakley.

The Oakley Farm James Calvin Oakley bought the property as aplace to
spend his retirement and for the next generation of hisfamily to live on. At
the time of purchase, a large colonial stylehouse and two smaller houses stood
on the tract. A dairy barn and anumber of cows were included in the
transaction, and a large number ofpecan trees grew on the land along the south
bank of the Clear Fork ofthe Trinity River. James Oakley gathered four of
his sons and onedaughter to live on the farm along with his wife Martha
Rebecca, knownas Mattie Rebecca or sometimes as Mattie, and himself. The
daughterand three of the four sons living with the family were married. Oneson
was a bachelor. Two married sons and two married daughters inJames Oakley's
family never lived on the Fort Worth farm. Then asnow, the railroad ran
east to west along Vickery Street a few hundredfeet north of the river.
university Drive also followed the route itdoes today, but there were no
houses west of Stadium Drive, except forthose on the farm. The Celar Fork of
the Trinity River formed thenorth property line of the farm. The Burford Dairy
Farm marked thewestern boundary of the property and the two farms were divided
by abarbed wire fence. Another dairy farm belonging to H.H. (Cass) Edwardswas
located south of the Oakley farm. These two tracts were separatedby a road
which ran to the Burford farm. No one lived on the vacantpasture land to the
east of the Oakley property. Access to theOakley farm was via McPherson
Street, which intersected withUniversity Drive to the east. The road leading
from McPherson onto thefarm crossed a cattle guard of wooden planks, which
provided anopening through the barbed wire fence which surrounded the property
onthree sides. James, Mattie Rebecca and their unmarried sonCharlie
Oakley lived in a large colonial house on the farm from 1919until James' death
in 1923. Mother and son continued to live thereuntil the house burned to the
ground in 1925. When he died, James wasburied at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in
Forth Worth. His wife Mattiewas interred next to him when she died in 1939.
James' death and the fire brought change to the Oakley farm. Son Sam built a
four-roomhouse on the site where the home destroyed by fire had stood for
hismother, Mattie, and his brother, Charlie Oakley. Charlie's
largegarden, next to the new house, supplied vegetables for most of theclan
living on the Oakley farm. He also kept a big supply of firewoodchopped and
stacked to provide heat for the Oakley's. Sam, hiswife May and their
twelve children lived in a modest home of their ownon the farm. Sam's older
brother Harry and younger brother Matt hadhouses for their families on the
farm. In 1919, daughter Lottie Oakleyand her husband Ed Backus built a small
three-room house on theproperty. In addition to Sam's twelve children,
Harry and hiswife Maggie had six children. Four Backus children lived there
too.Matt and Lula Oakley and their daughter Jane also lived on the farmduring
some of these years. So how did these families manage tosupport the more
than thirty people living on the farm? The threebiggest contributors were: the
dairy, the Backus Laundry and twogravel pits. In all, it would be hard to
imagine a greater contrastbetween the county club lifestyle in place on the
property as we knowit now and the back-breaking, subsistence way of living the
Oakleyfamily experienced on their farm between 1919 and 1935. Twiceeach
day, Sam and most of his children, referred to as the "dirtydozen" by their
cousins, were in the barns milking cows. There were nomilking machines. Oakley
hands drew all the mild from the animals. Thebarns were lit by kerosene
lanterns. Milking began at 3 or 4 am andwas completed by 7. Twelve of the
seventy cows were brought to thebarn's five or six stalls in shifts.
Until electricity came tothe farm in the 1930's, light in the homes also came
from lanterns, which had to be filled twice each day. The glass globes of the
oillamps became very sooty and regularly were washed w/ soap and waterbefore
the lanterns were polished w/ old newspapers. Wood firesprovided the only heat
in the homes on the farm. When electricitycame, a machine was added to
separate the cream from the milk. Themilk was put into large cans and iced in
a wooden bin. It was sold toa single buyer, Alford's Creamery. Sam
Oakley's family alsoraised much of the food for the cattle. He bailed hay
twice each yearfrom the west pasture. Sam grew cotton on a patch close to the
river. The cotton seed was used to supplement the diet of the farm animals. The
dairy cows also were fed oats, which were stored in a large silo. The hay was
stored in the barn. Pigs and chickens were alsoraised for food ant the
extra eggs were sold. In addition to thecotton, and okra patch provided some
extra money, but the abundantpecan trees on the Oakley farm provided another
important cash crop.Everyone, especially the children, participated in
gathering thepecans; and in a good year, Sam sold twenty large tow sacks of
nuts.As time passed and more and more of Sam's children married and leftthe
farm, outside labor was needed to fill the gaps created by thedeparting
children. The Woodall family was eventually hired to helpwith the farm work
and the Lando Harris family was hired to help w/the Backus Laundry. Most days,
the Oakley farm was the site of largefamily-style lunches. Even the laundry
pick up and delivery workersreturned home to the farm for the meal. Sam's
gravel pit wasworked by an outside contractor who paid money for the gravel
heremoved. However, Harry did almost all the work on his smaller pit. While
large machinery scooped up gravel and loaded it into largetrucks at the site
of Sam's pit, Harry could frequently be founddigging gravel from his pit w/
shovel and pick. He would load thegravel into a wheel barrow, then into a
wagon or small truck. Thehistory of the Backus Laundry, which originated
on the grounds of theOakley farm, is covered in a separate paper. It should be
pointed out, however, that the original laundry building occupied the same
groundwhere the clubhouse of the Colonial Country Club sits today. When
thefirst laundry building was destroyed by fire, a replacement wasre-built on
the same spot in 1930. Life on the Oakley farm wasnot all work and no
play. The banks of the Trinity River on the farmwere a popular swimming spot
during the early part of the twentiethcentury. For a while, Ed Backus built a
bath house on the river, whereguests were charged for swimming. The family
also rented bathing suitsand sold cold drinks, but the project was abandoned
after the bathhouse was destroyed by a flood. In 1935, the Oakley farm
was soldto J.M. Leonard, who had already begun developing the neighborhoodinto
what it has become today. Backus Laundry moved to the corner ofBerry Street
and Ryan Avenue. Mattie Rebecca and her son Charlie (onSam's side) moved to
Everman as the other Oakley children spread outto various places in and around
Fort Worth. Again the formerOakley farm is now "Colonial Golf Course"

My appreciation goes to Dorothy for writing the family history andTina for

DEATH: "The Citizen Advertiser" [Auburn, New York] 19 Apr 1939
J. Raymond Oakley, 58, of 25 Guernsey Street, Norwich, a prominentclothing
merchant of that city, was instantly killed when a Packardcoach driven by
Sheriff Neil Lewis, 60, of Norwich, Chenango County, left the Clark Street
highway eight miles west of Auburn shortly after9 o'clock this morning,
skidded along the shoulder of the road some 50feet and capsized. Sheriff Lewis
suffered a bad cut along the leftside of his neck and throat, lost a large
quantity of blood, and is inserious condition at the City Hospital.
Left Norwich At 7
Sheriff Lewis and Mr. Oakley, who often accompanied the sheriff whenconveying
prisoners to penal Institutions, left Norwich about 7o'clock this morning with
Ward Teachout, 33, bound for Attica Prison.Teachout had received a sentence
Monday at Norwich of one year to 18months in Attica for the crime of bigamy.
Teachout escaped thewreckage with minor cuts and bruises.
Sheriff Lewis was driving along at a fast clip out the Clark StreetRoad.
Teachout explained that the car met a truck followed by anautomobile going)
east. He said the car in the rear of the truckpulled out to pass and Sheriff
Lewis pulled his car over a little toofar to the right, hit the soft shoulder
and apparently the car wentout of control.
Hurled From Car
The car shot across the highway to the left side of the road andsailed along
50 feet until it
finally tipped over, and was badly wrecked. Oakley was thrown from thecar on
the right side. His body lay 50 feet east of the spot where thePackard came to
Its final stop.
The prisoner, Teachout. riding alone In the rear seat, althoughslightly
bewildered by the shock, managed to crawl out of thewreckage. He did not lose
his presence of mind entirely for hehastened down the road to the Poster
garage and the state troopersubstation in Aurelius was notified. Sergt.
William Stevenson andTrooper Ward Donovan speeded to the scene. An ambulance
was summonedto take Sheriff Lewis to the City Hospital and word was sent
toCoroner Raymond C. Almy of the death of Oakley
* Inquest Interrupted
The coroner at the time was holding an inquest at the Court House intothe
death of Edmund Graham south of Locke last March, when he wasstruck by a
Lehigh train. He recessed the inquest and went to thescene of the wreck. The
body of Oakley was ordered taken to the GlennF. Mosher undertaking rooms in
East Genesee Street. Deputy SheriffSeward Whitcomb of Aurelius was called and
he notified Sheriff I. BurtCooper. He and Undersheriff Wllard Wilcox rushed to
the scene and withWhitcomb Joined in the Investigation. Sergt. Joseph Deavens
of theSkaneateles State Police patrol also came along and assisted in theprobe
of the accident.
The prisoner, Teachout, won the admiration of the troopers andsheriffs for his
prompt action in notifying the authorities. Hisinjuries were given first aid
and he was taken to the trooperssubstation in Aurelius to await advice as to
his disposition from theChenango County authorities.
Sheriff Lewis apparently had complete faith in the model conduct ofhis
prisoner, Teachout, for the latter was permitted to ride alone Inthe rear
seat. Neither the sheriff nor his companion, Mr. Oakley hadguns; at least none
was found in their clothing or along the road, and the prisoner was not
handcuffed.
News of the sudden end of the trip of Sheriff Lewis and the death ofMr. Oakley
was broadcast over the state troopers teletype at theAurelius station to
notify the Chenango County authorities.
Wife a School Teacher
Mr. Oakley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Oakley, a schoolteacher In
the South Broad Street School in Norwich; a son TrumanOakley of Binghamton,
and a brother, P. Benson Oakley, who is on thenews staff of the Geneva Times.
Mrs. Oakley was prostrated by the newsof her husband's death and was taken
from the school to her home andplaced under a doctor's care. Other relatives
of the victim also werenotified. Under Sheriff Frank J. Machio accompanied by
Miss FlorenceLewis, a sister of Sheriff Lewis, came to Auburn today.
SheriffLewis's wife died sometime ago. As soon as Teachout is pronounced
ableto continue his trip to Attica Prison he will be turned over
toUndersheriff Machio. As he suffered only bruises and shock it wasexpected he
would be taken on to Attica late today.
Prisoner's Story
Sergeant Stevenson after completing his investigation at the scene ofthe
accident returned to the station and questioned Teachout. Theprisoner was the
only one who could give an explanation of how theaccident occurred. "I was
riding in the rear seat of the Packard coachand sheriff Lewis was driving with
Mr. Oakley riding on the frontseat," he said.
"A big truck was coming toward us and a car following the truckstarted to pull
ahead of the truck. Sheriff Lewis steered to the rightside of the road to give
more room and the car went off the concreteinto the soft shoulder."
As last night's severe rainstorm left the shoulders of the highway ina soft
muddy condition, it is believed the wheels of the Chenangosheriff's car went
into a skid and in trying to get the heavy vehicleback on the road, the
sheriff lost control. During the course of itswild trip along the pavement,
Mr. Oakley evidently was thrown againstthe door handle and the door flew open.
Mr. Oakley was tossed from themachine and apparently was instantly killed when
he struck thepavement.
Transferred to Jail
- Ward Teachout, the prisoner who escaped Injury in the smashup,
wastransferred to the sheriff's office from the state troopers station
inAurelius at noon.
Under Sheriff Frank J. Machio of Chenango County and Miss FlorenceLewis,
sister of Sheriff Lewis and matron of the Chenango County Jail, arrived in
Auburn early this afternoon. They visited Sheriff Lewis atthe hospital and
then visited the scene of the accident with SheriffI. Burt Cooper this
afternoon.
Under-sheriff Machio decided late today to take Teachout back toNorwich. State
troopers, Sheriff Cooper and officers whoinvestigated." the accident, were
loud in their praises of the promptaction of Teachout in getting the troopers
and medical aid to thescene were inclined to the believe that Teachout should
get a "break"for his work and the Norwich under sheriff was inclined to take
thesame view.
Teachout will be kept at Norwich several days, awaiting the outcome ofSheriff
Lewis' injuries. Teachout was suffering from shock when seenat the sheriff's
offices. He complained of severe back pains. He saidhis first shock when the
big Packard had stopped rolling over andover, was to see the burly sheriff
lying across his feet with a biggash in his neck and the blood spurting. Lewis
was hurled from thedriver's seat to the rear part of the car by the final
impact. Thenext shock was to see Oakley nowhere in sight.
Unaware of Oakley's Death
"Then I had to get somewhere for help for Sheriff Lewis and I hit forthe
Foster garage," remarked Teachout. He went to the hospital withSergeant
Stevenson of the state police and talked briefly with SheriffLewis. The
official was unaware of the death of his companion, Oakley.
Pays Last Bit On Old BUI
With a smile Teachout said he squared financial accounts with thehospital by
payment of 50 cents, the balance of a bill for histreatment of injuries in a
motorcycle accident on the Auburn-
Weedsport Road last summer.
Teachout is a native of Weedsport and attended the Weedsport HighSchool. He
has relatives in
this section. He said Sheriff Lewis is "a wonderful man. I hope hegets well."
