Notes for Margaret OLDFIELD

OBITUARY: "Elroy Leader" [Elroy, Juneau Co., WI] October 1923
MRS. SHELDON LIVED LIFE OF USEFULNESS Margaret, beloved wife ofCharles
Sheldon, passed away at her home in Elroy, Sunday morning,Oct. 14, 1923 after
a period of illness extending over severalmonths. She was the daughter of
Anthony and Elizabeth Oldfield, andwas born at Long Preston, Yorkshire,
England on April 6th, 1854, theoldest of six children. At an early age she
came to America with herparents, who took up their home on Millard's Prairie.
Her mother diedwhe she was only Twelve years old and she became a little
mother toher brothers and sister. When she arrived at womanhood she was
asuccessful school teacher for several years. Numbered among her formerpupils
are many who have since become prominent. Margaret wasmarried to Charles
Sheldon, November 27, 1877. Upon the untimely deathof her widowed brother John
in 1897, she gathered to her shelteringarms his children, Willie and Bessie,
and she raised them to maturityas her own. Mrs. Sheldon lived a life full of
high ideals andaccomplishments, radiant with Christian purpose and charity.
Shecarried her church, Plymouth Congregational, of Elroy on her heart, and was
tireless in service in the Sunday School, Women's Missionary, and Dorcas
Societies, on the official boards, and especially astreasurer for many years.
In all of these activities she wasessentially a leader. She always took
active leadership in civic andeducational affairs. For years she served the
city on School andLibrary Boards. She was an active worker in her lodge, the
EasternStar. In all her public service, where-ever rendered, she
workedwillingly and effectively, and her example was an inspiration to allof
her fellow workers. But it was in the most intimate circles ofher home and
neighborhood as wife, foster mother and neighbor, thatthe light that was in
her shone most brightly. Like her divine Master, she felt that her mission was
not to be ministered unto, but tominister. The one who of all knew her heart
the best, her bereavedhusband, characterized her life, "she always was doing
for others."Graven on the hearts of many, as her best monument, this sentiment
iswritten in imperishable letters. At the request of Mr. Sheldon, thisletter
from Dr. Spencer Beebe, is published as it expressesbeautifully the sentiments
of hundreds who are sincere mourners withhim.Sparta, Wis., Oct. 15, 1923. Mr.
Charles Sheldon, Elroy, Wis.Mydear friend, The sad news of Mrs. Sheldon's
passing away has justreached us and we hasten to express to you and her other
loved ones, our deepest sympathy. Charlie, all is well with her! Of that,
allwho have known her, even the leasts, are absolutely confident. Herlife has
been a benediction to a host of friends, and neighbors. Shehas scattered
sunshine all the way along. Elroy cannot be quite thesame with her away, but
you can rejoice with all who knew her in thefact that her noble life lives on
still in the lives of hosts of thefriends whom she has known and helped
throughout her life. I can seeher bright sunny smile and her kindly face
right now, as she lookedthe last time I saw her, even on her bed of pain. Hers
was not aspirit to die. Hers was a never dying spirit, and I cannot feel,
evenfor a moment, but what she is with you knowing, loving, and living, just as
much as she ever was, though quite unseen. My wife and Iwill never cease to
be thankful that the first five years of ourmarried life were spent in Elroy
among such friends as no other coupleever had, and neighbors to the kindly,
helpful, neighborly Sheldons. If only heaven can furnish us friends so true and
faithful, soneighborly and kind, if up there we shall meet our loved and our
own,and those who have entered our lives and our children's lives, andthat to
bless, then I shall be completely satisfied. The Good Booksays: "I shall be
satisfied when I awake in Thy likeness." It alsosays "In my Father's house are
many mansions........ I go to prepare aplace for you." And it says further,
"The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." There
is no refuge in a timeof storm like this which you are going through but the
Everlastingarms of a kind Heavenly Father. So good friend, and good soldier
ofthe Cross, that I know you to be, I know you will bear this cross likea true
Christian, and I know that the prayers of a host of friendswill be lifted to
sustain you through it all. O the happy five yearswe had there! The little
home, the advent of our three oldestdaughters! The wonderful neighbors on all
sides, the wonderful friendsthroughout the city and the country-side! To Cora
and to me it as onlya foretaste of heaven! And in that happy picture of our
memory, Mrs.Sheldon took her place of helpfulness and of happiness as a few
womenof earth are given to do. God bless you good friend. A fine letterfrom
Willie after I had been down to see Mrs. Sheldon showed us howdeeply he
appreciated and loved her. It did us a world of good to hearfrom him and to
read from his own hand how the things she did for himthroughout his boyhood
days were bearing fruit, and will continue todo so. She gave to the world
the best she had, and God will see thatthe best comes back to her. Most
sincerely,SPENCER D. BEEBE Mrs.Sheldon's funeral services were held at the
house Wednesday at oneo'clock in the afternoon and at the church a half hour
later, conducted by her friend and pastor, the Rev. F. N. Dexter. The burialwas
in the Elroy cemetery.
