OBITUARY: "The Daily Journal" [Freeport, Stephenson Co., IL]Thursday, July
11, 1907
Death of Mrs. Pope, Who
Came to Vicinity in 1835;
Lived Since Then Either Near
Farwell's Bridge or in Harlem.
Stephenson county lost one of its oldest residents when Mrs. MarinthaPope
passed away at half past six o'clock last evening at the old Popefarm west of
town, where she had lived for the greater part of herlong life. Until her last
illness, she had been very active for one ofher years and her mental faculties
were preserved undimmed. She hasbeen ill barely three weeks with an attack of
the grip which developedinto pneumonia and caused her death in her
eighty-fifth year.
Mrs. Pope had probably lived in this immediate vicinity longer thanany other
person. She came here in 1835 when a child of thirteen, withthe original
settlers of this portion of northwestern Illinois. MrsPope was a model
Christian woman -- good, kind and hospitable andbeloved by all who knew her.
In her church affiliates she was aMethodist, belonging to Embury Methodist
church. She was a lover ofboth flowers and children, and a woman of active
mind and a closereader. She was fond of talking over old times and her
intimateacquaintance with the subject and good memory made her
reminiscencesvery interesting. Few women, perhaps only those who settled in
theMississippi valley about the same time as she did, have seen suchremarkable
changes in the course of a life time.
Mrs. Pope was a daughter of David and Elizabeth Niles and was a cousinof the
late County Treasurer Homer Niles. She was born at Conneaut,Ashtabula county,
Ohio, on Sept. 20, 1822. When she was thirteen yearsold, in the fall of 1835,
the family moved to northern Illinois andsettled in the vicinity of Farwell's
bridge, just over the Winnebagocounty line. She lived there until 1849 when
she was married to JohnPope. The young couple made their home on the farm that
Mr. Pope hadsecured by direct patent from the government some ten years
before, where they were to spend the remainder of their lives. It is situatedon
the Galena road, a mile and a half west of Freeport. They had firstlived in a
log cabin that was sometimes known as the little log hotel. They never kept a
hotel, but their hospitality was so well known thattravelers along the state
road would sometimes drive right throughFreeport and stop with them. Mr. Pope
got the gold fever in 1854 andwent to California. During his absence, and with
money he sent home,Mrs. Pope in 1854 built the present residence. Mr. Pope
died on Oct.23, 1880.
Mrs. Pope is survived by three children as follows: Mrs. Sarah Ervayof Rudd,
Iowa; Mrs. Clinton Furry of Freeport, and Byron Pope, wholives on the old farm
where his mother had made her home for so manyyears. She is also survived by
one sister, Mrs. Emily Foster ofMinnesota.
The numerous friends that she made in the course of of her seventy-twoyears
residence in this locality will also deeply mourn Mrs. Pope'sdeath. While
living near Farwell's bridge, she became well acquaintedwith the Swansons and
the Guilfords, the Farwells and other settlersof that neighborhood. When she
moved to her new home, she quickly madefriends with the Watsons, the Bentleys,
the Spanglers, the Schofields, the Halls and other pioneers of the town of
Harlem.
The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at half past 2 o'clockfrom her
late home. Interment will be in the city cemetery, Rev. E. E.McKay will
officiate.

Notes for Thomas Jefferson NILES

Ashtabula County, OH
OBITUARY: "The Freeport Journal" [Freeport, Stephenson Co, IL,]Thursday,
April 20, 1854Submitted by Carol Page Tilson
Died in Ridott on the 7th inst. of lingering consumption, ThomasJefferson
Niles, aged fifty-one years and one month. The deceased was born in Canfield,
Prumble [sic] Co, Ohio in the year 1803, and shortlyafter, his parents moved
to Ashtabula Co., where he resided until1834, when he emigrated to Illinois,
and sought a home amid itsPrairie and forest wilds. Here, like every pioneer,
he suffered manyprivations and endured many hardships. No friendly head or
familiarcountenance greeted him upon his arrival; for none but the gaunt
formof the swarthy Indian were here to visit him in his lonely retreat.Often
as he retired at night, surrounded by a conclave of red men, hefeared, lest
his waking would be in eternity. But he lived to see thered man of the forest
recede from the approach of the white man, and the lowly wigwam give place to
the heaven directed spire, and thedreary prairie teeming with the industry and
enterprise of hiscountrymen. After an association of twenty years with him,
hisneighbors can attest, as a man, a citizen, and a Christian, he had butfew
equals; though his virtues were not exhibited in a great outwardshow, or
multiplicity of words. His aim was to do good unseen andalone, and his delight
was in the law of the Lord. He gave his heartto God in the morning of life,
and his confidence in the Redeemerremained unshaken until the day of his
death. He bore his last illnesswith Christian fortitude, and evidently longed
to depart and be withhis Savior, and his God. His end was peaceful and serene,
and now hesleeps in the bosom of his adopted country, to await the call
ofGabriel, to arouse his sleeping clay, and clothe it with immortality. He has
left numerous relatives and friends to mourn his loss but theysorrow not as
those without hope, for we know that those who sleep inJesus, shall God bring
with him.
(Note: Thomas Jefferson Niles was the son of David Niles, Sr., andLydia [poss.
Barrett] who moved from Rutland Co., VT, to Ohio, about1802. Stephenson County
histories recognize "Jefferson" and hiscousin, Andrew Jackson Niles, as the
first settlers of RidottTownship)
