BIOGRAPHY: "The City of Kenosha and Kenosha County, Wisconsin: A Record of
Settlement" by Francis H. Lyman [The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago,
1916], Vol. II, p.p. 119-120:
COLLEGE OF COMMERCE
The College of Commerce, an educational institution of which Kenosha has
every reason to be proud, was organized in 1893 by Otis L. Trenary. The first
year sessions were held in Simmons Hall with about fifty pupils in attendance.
Later a removal was made to the first floor of the county courthouse, where
the school was maintained for seven years. In 1901 Mr. Trenary erected the
first building in Wisconsin for private commercial school purposes, this being
located at Sheridan road and Market street in Kenosha, the building being now
leased by the city and utilized as a public commercial high school. In 1907
Mr. Trenary built the second private commercial school building in Wisconsin
at Racine and there he conducted his school for seven years. That building is
now also being used by the public schools as a commercial high school
building. Mr. Trenary had about two hundred pupils in each of these schools.
He still owns the buildings which he erected and which are rented from him by
the respective cities in which they are located. His own college was removed
to the Isermann building and there he specializes in stenographic work. He has
a well equipped institution and his methods of instruction are such as readily
fit one for the practical duties of the workday world. He has ever maintained
high standards and the graduates of his school are well trained for the
demands put upon them.

OTIS L. TRENARY
In the history of educational development in Kenosha mention should be made
of Otis L. Trenary, founder and promoter of the College of Commerce. He was
born in Lafayette county, Wisconsin, September 21, 1865, a son of John P. and
Elizabeth Ann [Stephens] Trenary, both of whom were natives of England but
came to the United States in childhood days, early settling in Wisconsin. The
father devoted his entire life to the occupation of farming, his labors being
ended in death in 1903. His widow, however, still survives.
Otis L. Trenary obtained a public school education and was graduated from
the State Normal School with the class of 1888. He afterward pursued a
business course in the Bryant & Stratton Business College in Chicago and
recognized the value of the training to such a degree that he took up the
profession of teaching along that line as a life work. For two years he was a
teacher in the Capital City Commercial College of Des Moines and later came to
Kenosha. Here he established the College of Commerce in 1893 and from the
beginning has had a most successful career as an educator in this field.
On the 10th of August, 1892, Mr. Trenary was married to Miss Lou A. Colvin,
of Factoryville, Pennsylvania, and they have become the parents of two
children, Gladys and Donald. His political allegiance is given to the
republican party and he has been its candidate for mayor and also for state
senator but could not overcome the normal democratic majority in his district.
He is content, however, to do his public service as a private citizen and he
willingly aids in all movements and plans for the general good. He is a member
of the Wisconsin Commercial Educators’ Association and his high standing in
the organization is indicated in the fact that through the past three years he
has been its president. His work has been of great value in its far reaching
influence and in the high standards which he has maintained.

"Wisconsin: Its Story and Biography, 1848-1913" by Ellis Baker Usher, Volume
8, [The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago and New York, 1914], p.p. 2475-2476:
OTIS L. TRENARY. Modern business requires practical and thorough training in
the same degree as the professions and sciences. In the southern half of the
state of Wisconsin there are no institutions which afford a better curriculum
and practical business education than the colleges of commerce located at
Kenosha and at Racine, both of which were found and are still conducted by
Otis L. Trenary. These schools, since their beginning in particularly the
Kenosha College, which was founded twenty years ago, has trained and graduated
hundreds of young men and women, and given them a thorough preparation for
entrance into business life. The Kenosha College had a beginning under
difficulties, and for some years its existence was difficult, and its founders
had many obstacles to overcome before placing this school on that fine basis,
but now for some years it has been recognized as one of the strongest
educational centers of its kind in Wisconsin, and has an appropriate place in
the history of Wisconsin’s education.
The Kenosha College of Commerce was founded in June, 1893, its first
quarters being in Simmons’ Hall, where it was conducted for two months with
only four pupils, and the enrollment for the entire year only reached thirty.
Many people were of the opinion that the town was too small to support such a
school, and furthermore, Mr. and Mrs. Trenary who did most of the teaching
during those first months, were strangers in the county, and they had to pass
the initiate novitiate, which is a bar to be crossed before entering any
profession.
After the close of the first year, the first floor of the County Courthouse
was leased for the school, and provided excellent quarters during the early
days of growth. The third year was begun with only eight pupils, and several
weeks passed before the school had attained numbers sufficient to be
supporting. In time these difficulties passed away, and for many years now the
school has had an ample enrollment, and the calls upon its graduates for
office assistants and other positions in business have been more than could be
filled. In the Fall of 1900 the County Board concluded to use the rooms
formerly occupied by the college and a new home was therefore required. The
experiences of the previous years had taught the proprietors just what was
needed, and in accordance with that experience they designed and built the
Kenosha building, which has since been the school home. The equipment of the
building, and other facilities for carrying on educational work are perhaps
not surpassed anywhere in the state, and besides this fact of increasing the
efficiency of the school, the new quarters have also added to the dignity and
standing of the College of Commerce as an institution. The curriculum of the
College of Commerce has been set in pace with modern progress. Some of the
earlier studies have been abandoned, and more profitable practical courses
substituted. The object throughout being to provide practical instruction
without any of its frills. The success of the Kenosha College caused Mr.
Trenary to found a similar school at Racine. The school at Racine has now been
existence for more than four years, since it sprang full grown into existence
on the basis of the reputation of the old school, it has none of the struggles
which characterized the history of the Kenosha College, but as a companion of
the old school it has had a career of remarkable success. The Racine building
was likewise built especially for this College of Commerce, and is a handsome
two story brick residence, designed and equipped in every way for practical
utility. Mr. Trenary supervises the work of both institutions, and as the
school are only forty-five miles ride apart, he is able to give both of them
his close attention every day.
Otis L. Trenary, whose home is in Kenosha, is a native of Wisconsin, having
been born on a Kenosha county farm September 24, 1865. He is the third in the
family of John P. and Elizabeth A. [Stephen]s Trenary. His parents are both
natives of England, whence they came to America when young, first locating in
Grant county, Wisconsin. The father was a ship builder by trade, and followed
that occupation for many years, subsequently locating at Plattville, Grant
county, where he turned his attention chiefly to general farming and stock
raising. Some years later he moved to Kenosha county, where he continued in
the same occupation, and resided on the old homestead in that county until his
death with occurred in January 1903, when he was about sixty-seven years of
age. His widow now resides in Platteville.
Mr. Otis L. Trenary received his early education in the public schools of
Champaign, Illinois, and began his career as a common school teacher in
Wisconsin. In this state he taught two years, and then taught two years as an
instructor in the College of Commerce in Des Moines, Iowa. While in Des
Moines, he met and married Miss Lou A. Colvin of that city, where she was
reared and educated, though born in Pennsylvania. After their marriage Mr.
Trenary located at Kansasville, Wisconsin, but soon afterwards moved to
Kenosha, where, as already related, he established the College of Commerce,
and was the capable and ready assistant of his wife. He carried this though
after many difficulties to its present high standing and fine success.
Mr. and Mrs. Trenary are the parents of two children: Donald C. who was born
July 4, 1906; Gladys M., born in 1894, is a teacher in the Racine College of
Commerce. Fraternally Mr. Trenary is affiliated with Lodge No. 750, B. P. O.
E. of Kenosha, being exalted ruler of the lodge for two terms. His residence
is at 322 Market street, Kenosha.

Notes for George Joseph TROTT

SOURCE: "History of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties" by Jesse D.Mason in
1883:
The opportunities offered a young man for progress, comfort, and acompetency
in this pleasant portion of California when intelligence and spirit are
supplemented by industry, enterprise and frugality, areillustrated in the
subject of this sketch, whose home forms one of the illustrations of this
volume.
George Joseph Trott was born at St. Anthony, Minnesota, February 21,1853.
Minnesota was then a young territory of the extreme northwest, with a few
villages along the Mississippi and other navigable rivers, and in this
comparative wilderness Mr. Trott first saw the light. There he remained and
grew up, incited to energy and thrift by the example of the busy people around
him, who were making the wilderness into one of the prominent and wealthy
States of the Union.
In 1870, when but seventeen years of age, he crossed the plains to California.
Then the immigrant was not compelled to toil many long months with the
lumbering ox wagon, keeping constant guard against the predatory savage or
searching the deserts for grass and water, but the Pacific Railroad was built,
and in the lying train, though day and night, over Land, mountain, and desert,
the traveler made his easy journey. Thus arriving in California he made his
way direct to Santa Barbara County, locating upon the land where Central City
has since been built, a pleasant and healthy location in the valley of the
Santa Maria, close by the borders of San Luis Obispo County. Engaging
actively in farming he there remained until 1876, when he settled upon his
present farm, eight miles up the valley of the Santa Maria from Central City,
and eighteen and a half miles from Guadalupe. His farm contains 160 acres of
fine agricultural land which has been wellimproved, constituting a handsome
property. In addition to his farming, Mr. Trott is the owner of one of the
most effective steam threshing-machines in the valley, which he himself
manages and inwhich he takes a just pride. In 1881, he threshed with this
machine 57,000 centals, or 95,000 bushels of grain, mostly wheat.
This young and enterprising farmer does not take to himself all the joys and
cares of his active life, but shares them with wife and family. Mr. Trott was
married in 1875 to Miss Mary E. Oakley, a native of California, and is the
happy father of four daughters.

SOURCE: Several contributors to a chapter "The Santa Maria Valley" in the
book "History of Santa Barbara County, California: from it searliest
settlement to the present time" by Michael James Phillips agree that the first
white settler in the Santa Maria Valley was Benjamin T. Wiley, who located
there about 1868. "He got the county surveyor," said Mrs. Lincoln, "to run
boundaries on a full section ofland which lay between large ranches in the
eastern central valley and was not claimed by the ranch owners because they
regarded it as worthless." "Among other early comers were William L. Adam,
George Trott, George Stowell, Martin Tunnell, Frank Fugler, John Rice, J.K.
Triplett, Israel Miller, R.D. Cook, W.A. Haslam; Jr., John W. Speed, Reuben
Hart, W.O. Laughlin, Alvin Cox, Dr. Lucas, James F. Goodwin, F. Twitchell,

the community at large.

about 1871. Since that time he has been a prominent factor of the life of
this town and has done much toward its upbuilding.

Maria. From this union they have six children all of whoms urvive him. His
children are Mrs. Daisy Herron, Mrs. Effie Kelley,of Hanford, Mrs. Ora
Blosser, of Santa Barbara; Mrs. Esther Daniels of Soledad; Emmett Trott and
Mrs. Carol McFadden. Mr. Trott is an uncleof E.T. Bryant.
It was about 1880 tha t Mr. Trott became an owner with Mr. Bryant of the
Bryant and Trott Hardware company, one of Santa Maria's oldest and best
stores. Ill health a few years ago compelled him to retire from the firm.
The Odd Fellows flag is at half staff today in honor of his memory. Mr. Trott
was one of the first members of that order here. While funeral arrangements
have not been made as yet, it is understood that this lodge will have charge
of the last sad rites of their lovedmember.
All Santa Maria mourns the loss of a pioneer son today and extends to the
bereaved family its sincere sympathy.
