alone, but I think I can get one for they was onesent me word to keep my head

The following transcription is of a letter written by Iva Miller Davisto her
Uncles and Aunts shortly after the death of her grandmother,Mrs. Nancy Jane
Oakley Newman, who died on February 17, 1944.
Feb. 1944
Dear Uncles and Aunts,
Newspapers never print details as some would like to know--so I’mwriting you
a description of Grandmother’s death and burial.
Mother’s cards and letters have told you how she gradually failed inhealth
since the last of December and was so low for about four weeksthat someone sat
up each night. The neighbors were especially good tohelp in that respect.
Sometimes two of them sat up or one of thefamily and one neighbor or two of
the family the few nights that noone came in. On Jan. 22, Uncle Otta’s and
Aunt Myrtle's cousins madeher very happy and much better than she had been. At
all times whenGrandmother was rational, she was appreciative. She would look
up andthank us for the least service and say she loved us and we were sogood
to her. She often called for Mother and asked her to stay rightby--not to
leave her. She would tell neighbors and grandchildren notto go away--she might
need them. She begged Dr. Horace to do somethingfor her next to the last time
he was there.
I couldn't go much except on week-ends, but Friday p.m. or Sat. a.m.found me
going and staying through Sunday. The last Saturday I wasthere, she wanted up.
We helped her onto a chair covered in pillows.Mother changed her clothes and
bed and with help combed her hair. Iheld her weak head up. She seemed to know
all about it and enjoyedbeing up, but was exhausted when we put her back to
bed. On the nextTuesday, Feb. 15, Mother felt she was much worse. I called
three timesthat day to know about her. She was decidedly lower Wednesday
morningwith a deep rattling in her throat. The doctor stopped to see her
andsaid he was not mistaken this time. Her time was short. I rushed tosee her
after I got home from school and found her in that shape. Shethrew her left
hand, picked up her head and turned it often; her eyeswere closed. We sat
there with her--waiting, but not able to do athing for her. At midnight,
others insisted that Mother and I go tobed. At two-thirty, they called us
again.
We sent for Uncle Bill. She was missing one breath in 5 or 4 or 3. Byher
bedside were Mother, Uncle Bill, Dad, Clarence, Polly, Hubert andI, Jesse Lee,
Minnie Fulmer, Lena Baker Oakley, Mrs. John Pedigo, andLois Tuck Clark. At
3:30, she easily went away.
We put in a call for Uncle Otta and asked him to notify Uncle Lee andthe
Miller boys. Jesse sent wires to others at distance. Minnie F.called Nashville
and Tracy Kin. We wrote cards to nearer ones who hadno telephone.
Uncle Bill, Mother, and I selected her casket which was the prettiestthe
Manchester Funeral Home had. We also ordered the pall made up ofpink and white
carnations, bordered in pink gladiolas. Uncle Edd’sspray was pink gladiolas.
Uncle Otta’s was a wreath of white glads andiris on an easel. There were
twenty sprays and easels. Ryce and Thelmaeach had an easel. The Tullahoma Shoe
Factory had one.
The weather was very bad Thursday with some rain all day. Friday wasdark and
threatening. Saturday was a beautiful sun shining day. Rainpoured early Sunday
morning and until noon. So it seemed thatSaturday’s weather was God-sent.
Throughout Thursday, Thurs. night, Fri., Friday night, and Sat., theneighbor
women brought dishes and sandwiches of all kinds.
Ernest, George Edwards, Jesse, Clarence Miller, W.C., and GeorgeNewman were
active pall bearers. Ryce, Thelma, Uncle Bill’s girls,Lena’s girls, Folly,
Mary Frances, some neighbor girls, and I carriedthe flowers to the grave.
Bro. Raymond Taylor preached the funeral calling back memories of theministers
of the family in his preliminary remarks. He took a text “ToDie Is Gain”
and spoke well on it. He read a poem Uncle Otta left inour hands and the
obituary that I wrote, Bro. Faulkner lead in prayer.
The Hillsboro Methodist minister and some of his congregationincluding Mrs.
Donnie Jernigan Brothers, and some of my present schoolgirls did the singing.
It also was well done. The undertakers wereunusually thoughtful, sympathetic
and kind.
Thelma came Thursday and plans to stay until about next Thursday withMother.
Vesta nor Aunt Minnie were able to be there. Harris was unableto get a pass
from the Army because grandmothers are not consideredmembers of the immediate
family. He is in San Antonio, Texas. Hecalled at midnight Thursday and could
be heard clearly and could hearThelma and W.C. He also wired Mother and Uncle
Bill separate sympathymessages. Uncle Edd’s telegram was called through
Friday morning.
We stayed at the church until the undertakers finished placing theflowers,
then went to a lonely home without
Grandmother.[http://home.att.net/~l.dale.miller/nannie_newman_death.htm]

"His body was discovered along the tracks east of Plano. It wasthought it may
have been there for 4 to 6 weeks. A sister was trackeddown in Arkansas. It was
believed he had been visiting a half brotherin Denver and was returning to
Chicago." ~provided by Anne Sears.
Noble suffered a head injury as a child and was thereafter subject toseizures.
It is believed that he suffered a seizure that caused him tofall from a train
causing his death. He had been a student at theMoody Bible Institute in
Chicago.
Per a family member...his brother Andrew was b. 1901 and when Noble'ssister
came to make arrangements she was very upset and this wasprobably the reason
for the mistake in birth year.
