Two Drown at Homer Park
H. G. Marshall Swept Over Dam;
Roy Horton Dies Trying Rescue
Urbana Man Loses Life When
Whirlpool Capsizes Rowboat.
Companion Saved
Marshall’s Wife Witnesses His Death
Both Bodies Recovered Near Scene of Tragedy.

Howard G. Marshall, manager of the Cleveland Grain and Millingcompany,
Champaign, living at 412 West Springfield avenue, that city, and Roy Horton,
tinner, 1008 West Stoughton street, this city, weredrowned at the Homer park
dam just before noon Sunday.
Marshall lost his life by being swept over the dam, while swimming, and Horton
gave his in a heroic attempt to save him, when a boat inwhich he and Sylvester
Blake, also of this city, had gone to therescue capsized.
The bodies of both men were recovered about 200 feet below the dam. That of
Marshall was found about an hour and 30 minutes after he wasswept over, but
searchers grappled until 4 o’clock before the body ofHort was found.
Someone thought Marshall showed signs of life and members of theChampaign fire
department, summoned in advance and on hand when hisbody was found, worked an
hour and 45 minutes with a pulmotor, but tono avail.
Wife Witnesses Deaths.
Mrs. Marshall witnessed her husband’s death, from the south bank.
They and their six-year-old daughter had gone to Homer park early, last week to
be guests of John Sommers and family, who have two cabinsthere.
They had a dinner engagement in Homer, during the noon hour andMarshall, who
had been in bathing a short time, was preparing to comeout to fill the
appointment, when he lost his life.
Marshall was floating on his back and drifted too near the dam, without being
aware of his danger. His wife shouted a warning, but itwas too late. The
current caught him and carried him over thewaterfall and he was trapped in the
whirlpool below.
While he was battling for his life against the rush of water,
CharlesBurkhardt, manager of the park, reached him with a pole. He clung toit
and Burkhardt, walking on the apron of the dam, was slowly pullinghim in, when
Marshall’s body was caught in an eddy and jerked withsuch violence that the
pole was broken against the timbers of the dam.The current caught him, and
buffeted him about. He sank and came uptwo or three times, crying for help
each time his head appeared abovethe water. Then his body was rolled over and
over in the rapids andfinally sank for the last time.
Horton and Blake to Rescue.
In the meantime, Horton and Blake had gone to the rescue in a rowboat.
Without a thought of their own safety, they rowed close in until theboat was
caught in the rapids. It struck the dam and capsized, Hortonbeing thrown out
on one side and Blake, on the other.
Blake was nearer the bank and, after a hard battle, was rescued.Horton
disappeared and did not come up. Blake was nearly drowned butwas resuscitated
by first aid methods.
Search for the bodies then began. Two flat boats and a number ofsmall craft,
in charge of men with grappling hooks, combed the bottombelow the dam.
Benton Barnes, wading in the shallows, came in contact with Marshall’sfoot,
and with assistance dragged the body to shore.
The body of Horton was not recovered for more than five hours and noattempt to
restore animation was made.
Thousands Line Banks.
Thousands lined the banks of Salt Fork creek while Marshall was makinghis
fight for life. All the time he was battling the whirlpool he wascrying
piteously for help, and his shouts, heard far back in thetimber, drew many to
the scene. The Ku Klux Klan was holding agigantic picnic in the park and its
members help swell the crowd.
Several times, Marshall seemed about to save himself, only to becaught in the
powerful undertow and dragged back into the cauldron. He was a strong swimmer,
but finally became exhausted and was whirleddown stream, the crowd looking on,
powerless to help.
Horton’s brave act aroused enthusiasm, which turned to horror as thecrowd
saw him plunged to his doom.
Already there is a movement afoot for application for a Carnegie medalfor
presentation to his young wife.
Mrs. Marshall bore up splendidly. She watched the efforts toresuscitate her
husband, smiling encouragingly thru her tears at timeswhen it appeared that
the spark of life was returning. Hope turned toanguish when the attempt
finally was abandoned and Marshall waspronounced beyond human aid. There was
more excitement soon afterrecovery of the bodies. Three men were sitting on
the railing of thebridge, just above the dam and were plunged into the water,
ten feetbelow, when the railing collapsed. They were rescued
withoutdifficulty.
Coroner Investigated.
Coroner E. L. Cavanee arrived late in the afternoon, soon after thebodies had
been removed. He subpoenaed a number of witnesses and setthe time for the
inquest at 7:30 o’clock tonight in the Urbana cityhall.
Fred Lucus, Danville, C. B. Burkhardt, who attempted to save Marshallfrom the
top of the dam with a pike pole; Ed Wiley, Homer; J. P. Hart,1215 North
Hickory street, Champaign; James Neil, 508 West Griggsstreet, this city; John
Sommers, Champaign, and J. E. Rethard, 402West Vine, Chalmpaign, and the wives
of the two victims will appear aswitnesses.
The coroner’s jury is composed of Jacob White, foreman; AlbertSaltzgaver, W.
