T. E. Matteson, merchant, Wonewoc. Is a native of Vermont, born in1824. He
lived with his parents until 1844, when he went to Boston,where he engaged in
the mercantile business for about twelve years,during which time, in 1848, he
was married to Sarah B. Dudley, born inthe State of Maine, in 1822. In 1856,
Mr. Matteson started west,arriving at Wonewoc in April, and at once engaged in
the mercantilebusiness, and is still following the same. He is Postmaster
atWonewoc, which office he has held since 1865. Is a Republican inpolitics.
The children are, Mary, now Mrs. Hampton, and Ulysses.

THOMAS E. MATTESON has been identified with the growth and developmentof the
town of Wonewoc since his residence began here in April, 1856.He was born in
Clarendon, Rutland county, Vermont, a son of GeorgeMatteson, also a native of
the Green Mountain State. The paternalgrandfather, Francis Matteson, was a
native of Rhode Island, hisancestors having been early settlers of that
colony. George Mattsonmarried Martha Fisk, a native of Danby, Vermont, a
daughter of ReubenFisk; the genealogy of this family states that Reuben Fisk
was born inCoventry, Rhode Island, in 1764, and became the father of
twelvechildren who became quite noted for longevity; Sallie and Lovisa
arerecorded as the oldest twins in the country; they were born June 12,1802,
at Danby, Vermont; Sallie died in August, 1891, and Lovisasurvives; the former
married Levi Clark, and the latter became thewife of Albert Matteson; both
reared large families; Reuben Fisk had atwin sister; they were born January
27, 1808 [see sketch of Reuben andNathan Fisk]. Israel Fisk, the oldest of
this family lived to beeighty-two years of age; Abigail died at ninety-seven;
Valeriah diedat eighty-one; the mother of Thomas E. Matteson died at eighty
yearsof age; Christina died at ninety; Lucy lived to be eighty; and Nancydied
at forty-five.
Mr. Matteson was reared in his native State. About 1845 the familyremoved to
Erie county, New York, where the parents lived theremainder of their days.
They had a family of nine children, seven ofwhom lived to mature years;
Philena was born in Vermont in 1816;Fidelia died in New York State, February
17, 1892, aged seventy-fouryears; Thomas E. was born April 19, 1824; Chapman
was born in 1833;William, Francis and Judah are now deceased. In early manhood
oursubject went to Boston, Massachusetts, where he was engaged forseveral
years as a grocery clerk in a wholesale house. In 1847 he wasmarried to Sarah
B. Dudley, a native of Maine and a direct descendantof the eminent Dudley
family of England.
In 1856 Mr. Matteson emigrated to Wisconsin, and located in Wonewoc.Being
pleased with the prospect of the place he decided to remainhere, and so
engaged in the general mercantile trade; for more thanthirty years he was one
of the leading merchants of that place. Hiswife died October 24, 1890. She was
a woman of Quaker parents, andpossessed to a large degree the virtues of that
worthy people. Mr.Matteson has two children: Mary is the wife of L. A.
Hampton, and hassix children; Ulysses G. married Ida Niles, a daughter of
Jerry Niles,an early settler of Wonewoc. In politics Mr. Matteson is a
Republican.For twenty-one years he was Postmaster at Wonewoc, ending his
servicewith the beginning of President Cleveland's administration.

OBITUARY:
Thomas Eddy Matteson
Twenty-Two Years Postmaster at Wonewoc
The death of Thomas E. Matteson, brief mention of which was made inour last
issue, removes from our midst a man who for more than a scoreof years was very
prominent in Wonewoc's social and business life.Mr. Matteson was a man who was
a leader in political matters and whoexerted no inconsiderable influence on
the fortunes of the communityin which the most of his life was cast.
Our rememberance of him is of one whose kindly nature was
consistantlymanifesting itself in various ways and of knowing that Tom
Matteson,as we have always heard him called, was held in highest regard by
thepeople who had known him for so many years.
Thomas Eddy Matteson was born at Clarenden Springs, Vermont, April 19,1824 and
died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.A. Hampton atBaraboo on Saturday,
September 28, 1907.  When 15 years of age Mr.Matteson worked for a wholesale
grocery house in Boston, Mass.  Hepursued this occupation for about 15 years
but the next two years hewent into the retail grocery business in the same
city.  In 1856 hecame to Wonewoc and engated in the general mercantile
business,retiring in 1884.
In 1847 he was united in marriage to Sarah B. Dudley to which uniontwo
children were born - Mary F. Hampton, of Baraboo and Ulysses S.,of this city. 
Mrs. Matteson died on October 24, 1890.  Mr. Mattesonserved as postmster of
Wonewoc for 22 years ending his services withthe beginning of President
Cleveland's administration.
The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.

Lucian.F. Matthews, 61, died May 12, 1954 at the North Park nursinghome in
Pulaski where he had been a patient since May 7.  At that timehe suffered a
cerebral hemorrhage while in the office of Dr. John L.H. Mason.
He was born and spent his early life near Mannsville, moving toPulaski in
1914. He was the son of Edson and Eva McCumber Matthews.Surviving is his
widow, Mrs. Opal Colvin Matthews, whom he married in1917.
The funeral was at the Foster Funeral Rome in Pulaski with Rev. JamesN. Pauley
of the Pulaski Methodist church officiating.
Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemeteryPulaski.

OBITUARY:  "The Wellsboro Agitator"  [Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA]Thurs., Nov 28,
1963
Mrs. Ida Mattison Whitney of Tioga, RD 1, died Saturday at the age of76.
She was born October 17, 1887, the daughter of Willis and LucindaFinch
Mattison.  Her husband was the late Alfred V. Whitney and shewas a member of
Tioga chapter, Order of Eastern Star, the Methodistchurch and the Grange.
Surviving are four daughters; Mrs. Marjorie Tomlinson and Miss DorothyWhitney
of Mansfield; Mrs. Louise Smith and Mrs. Ruth Smith ofHorseheads, N.Y.; two
sons, Norman of Tioga and Lawrence of Chemung,N.Y.; 21 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.
The body was at the Scureman Funeral Home.  Services were heldTuesday,
November 26th with the Rev. J. Lester Showalter officiating.Burial was in
Evergreen Cemetery.

OBITUARY:  "The Wellsboro Gazette"  [Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA]  Jul27, 1922
J. B. Mattison, of Ansonia, where he had been employed as telegraphoperator
for several years, died at the Blossburg Hospital lastWednesday morning after
2 weeks' illness of peritonitis. Mr.Mattison's wife is a patient at the
hospital and her condition is suchthat she has not been told of his death.
The deceased was 38 years of age and besides his wife is survived bythree
children, also by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Mattison, ofTioga.
The funeral was held at the home of the parents of the deceased inTioga last
Saturday afternoon.
