Former councilman May dies
Jim May lived all over the world, but only Santa Maria was truly home.
Born in a Santa Maria home in 1921, May died Sunday at Marian MedicalCenter at
the age of 85.
Family and friends are remembering the man who had a deep passion forhis
hometown and the potential it had for others. May served thecommunity as a
member of the Planning Commission from 1981 to 1984 andagain from 1989 to
1995. He was elected to the City Council in April1984 and served until 1988.
He really loved Santa Maria and the opportunities it affordedindividuals and
families, recalled City Councilman Bob Orach, whoserved with May on the
council.
May grew up in Santa Maria and attended UCSB before joining the armywith the
outbreak of World War II, according to his son, Jack May.
The elder May fought in the European theater, and when he returnedattended and
graduated from UC Berkeley. He was then hired by the U.S.State Department,
where he worked as a diplomat in 15 countries beforeretiring in 1977.
That's when he returned to Santa Maria.
He felt that Santa Maria was his home and he took great pride in thecity and
what it could do, Jack May said. He loved the place.
In fact, when May returned, he moved into a home on Speed Street onlya couple
doors away from the house where he was born.
He'd been around the world and came back almost to the same block,Jack said.
Combining his love of Santa Maria and what he saw on his worldtravels, May was
always looking at how to create more affordablehousing.
Up until last year, he was advocating for higher-density housing andeven
projects that incorporated multiple stories within the downtowncore.
Tom Urbanske, who served on the council with May, said the two shareda goal of
achieving adequate affordable housing in Santa Maria.
Urbanske described May as real intellectual. Everything that came hisway, he
would look at and study, Urbanske said.
I'm really sad to hear that Jim is gone, Urbanske said. I feel likehe was a
good friend and a good person.
May's roots in Santa Maria are deep. He is a descendant of one of thevalley's
pioneering families - the Oakleys, for whom Oakley Park andOakley school are
named.
His grandfather, W.C. Oakley, was the city's second mayor and hisfather, Fred
L. May, was a councilman from 1922 to 1926.
As a hobby, May researched and even wrote a book on Santa Maria'shistory. He
and Floyd Snyder co-authored "Fifty Fabulous Years," whichchronicles the Santa
Maria Valley from 1945 to 1995.
Santa Maria Times history columnist Shirley Contreras said May was awealth of
knowledge who was always supplying I think he had a passionfor Santa Maria,
she said. He dearly loved the history.
May is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and six children: Stephen,Marianne,
Anthony, Alice, Jack and Fred.

Notes for John W MAY

Parents: John May Jr. and Jane Dean
"Biographical Souvenir of Delaware and Buchanan Counties Iowa"(Chicago: F.A.
Battey & Company 1890.) Pages 626-28 John W.May was born in Crawford
County, Pa., May 2, 1824. He comes ofPennsylvania parentage, his father, John
May, and his mother, who borethe maiden name of Jane Deen, both having been
born and reared in theKeystone State. They always resided there and there also
died, thefather in 1866, in the seventy-second year of his age, and the
motherin 1876 -- January 13 -- in the eighty-first year of her age.The father
came of Irish parentage; the mother of English. Theybelonged to the plain,
substantial stock of their locality, beingengaged throughout their lives in
the peaceful pursuits ofagriculture. They were the parents of eight children,
of whom thesubject of this notice is the third in point of age. The eldest,
adaughter, Betsie, is now the widow of David Johnson, and resides inCrawford
county, Pa.; Polly, the wife of James Greer, lives inCrawford county, Pa.;
William is deceased; Washington is deceased;Nancy is the wife of Washington
McIntire, and lives in Crawfordcounty, Pa; Thomas lives at Pine Island, Minn.,
and the youngest,Sarah, is deceased. John W., our subject, was reared in
hisnative place, growing up on a farm and being trained to the habits
ofindustry and usefulness common to farm life. He received a
limitedcommon-school education, his training in this respect being
restrictedto a few winter terms in schools of the neighborhood. He
beganin the world for himself at the age of twenty, leaving home in 1844and
coming West as far as Boone county, Ill. He lived there till 1850,engaged in
various pursuits. With the discovery of the great goldfields in California, he
caught the infectious spirit of the times, and, in 1850 formed one of a party
of fortune hunters, and made hisway across the plains, spending the next four
years in California.Like all the early emigrants to the Pacific coast, Mr. May
had aworld of experience crowded into those four years of his life. He wasfour
months crossing the plains by team, and he endured an amount ofhardship and
privation, and encountered an amount of adventure, whichwould make a readable
romance of itself. Then came that strangeunstable life, with its ebb and flow
of feverish excitement, its manyshocking tragedies, and equally as many
exhibitions of personalheroism and unselfish devotion to humanity, which
marked the historyof those times. Mr. May was in the midst of it all, and saw
it at itsheight. He remained in California till 1854, engaged in
mining, and made during the time about three thousand and six hundred
dollarswhich he brought home with him in gold. He returned by way of Panamaand
was one month making the trip. Landing at New York he paid a visitto his old
home in Pennsylvania, remaining during the summer, and thenin the fall of that
year he started West again, taking up hisresidence, as before in Boone county,
Ill. He had previously purchaseda farm there, and this he disposed of the next
year. He marriedin the meantime, and, in January, 1856, he came to Iowa.
He came withthe intention of staying, and his first step was to buy land.
Hebought two hundred and twenty-three acres in section 6, township, onwhich he
erected a house, and on which, and a portion of the sectionadjoining, he has
since resided. He now has a farm of threehundred and sixty-nine acres
lying in a body in these two sections, all well improved and in a splendid
state of cultivation. Mr. May hasgiven his entire time to farming pursuits
since settling in thecounty, and he has met with a fair degree of success. He
has takenconsiderable interest in the social and educational matters of
hisneighborhood, being ardent in his support of the public schools,
andstanding at all times for the enforcement of the law and theobservance of
good order. He came West not as an adventurer butas a bona fide settler,
his purpose being to make for himself andfamily a home where they might enjoy
such comforts and pleasures asshould fall to their lot. In the accomplishment
of this purpose he hasbeen singularly happy. He was married, as above
noted, whileresiding in Boone county, Ill. The event occurred November 29,
1855.The lady whom he selected to share his life's fortunes was a younglady,
then of that county, Miss Marida Colvin, who was born in Eriecounty, N.Y.,
July 27, 1835. Her parents, Elijah and Maria (Austin)Colvin, were also natives
of Erie county, N.Y., the father having beenborn in 1806 and died in 1873, and
the mother born in 1808 and died in1837. These were the parents of four
children, or whom Mrs. May wasnext to the youngest. The eldest, a brother,
James C., resides inGrundy county, this state; Anson is deceased, and
Philinda, wife ofRoss Porter, resides in Goffin's Grove township, this
county.Mr. and Mrs. May have had born to them five children -- Alice,
bornNovember 3, 1856, died October 11, 1860; twin boys, born March 1,1863, and
died in infancy; John A. born January 10, 1864, married MissOrpha Toney, June
19, 1889, graduated in pharmacy in Philadelphia in1887, and is now residing
with his parents preparing for the practiceof medicine; and last, Minnie, born
November 22, 1868, and now thewife of Earl Bronson of Manchester. Mr.
May is an activesupporter of all movements looking to the improvement of the
conditionof agriculture. He takes but little interest in politics
beyondvoting. He is a zealous democrat, having supported the democraticticket
since he was twenty-one years of age. BURIAL: Iowa WPA(Works Progress
