Clarence H. Mang
B A R K E R — Clarence H. (Chunmy) Mang, 70, of Huntington Beach,here, died
suddenly Wednesday (Feb. 17) 1971 at Lake Wales, Fla., ofan apparent heart
attack while deep sea fishing with friends there.
He and his widow, the former Helen Kenyon, were staying at theirsummer
residence in nearby St. Petersburg.
A former mayor of Barker, he served this village from 1932 to 1948. Hewas
formerly employed by Niagara County land later established the C.H. Mang co.
in 1929.  He retired from there in 1955 and was lateremployed in the
maintenance department of Baker Central School.
A member of the Faith United Methodist Church of Barker and theSomerset Lodge
F & AM 639, he was a charter member of the Barker LionsClub and was an exempt
member of the Barker Volunteer Fire Dept.
Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donald(Geraldine) Klatt
of this village; two brothers, Winfield Mang Sr. ofAnaheim, Calif., and Edward
Mang of Newfane; four grandchildren andseveral nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Hood Funeral Home here Friday and Saturdayfrom 2 to 5
and 7 to 9 p.m. where services will be held Sunday at 2p.m., the Rev. Alryn
Foster, pastor of Faith United Methodist Churchofficiating.
Masonic services will be held Friday evening at the funeral home, at atime to
be announced. Burial will be in Hartland Central Cemetery.

Town's First Police Chief,
Elmer C. Mang, Dies at 74
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bury Funeral Home, 3070 Delaware Ave.,
Kenmore, for Elmer C. Mang, 74, Town of Tonawanda police chief for 37 years
before retiring in 1959.
Mr. Mang, formerly of 37 Legion Drive, Town of Tonawanda, died Saturday in
Newfane Intercommunity Hospital where he had been a patient two weeks.
He had lived with a brother, Clarence H. Mang of Barker, since last month.
Descendant of pioneer town residents, Mr. Mang was appointed the town's first
police chief in 1922 when the force included only a handful of men. When he
retired, he had 65 officers in his command.
Mr. Mang's grandfather, Isidore Mang, for whom Mang Avenue in Kenmore was
named, erected a home at 2746 Delaware Ave. This building is now occupied by
the Wheel Chair Home.
A great-uncle, Frank Mang, settled at Delaware and Mang, the present site of
the State Bank of Kenmore.
Mr. Mang was a member of the International and Erie County Associations of
Chiefs of Police and was former president of the latter group. He also
belonged to Somerset Lodge 639, F&AM, of Barker.
Mr. Mang was one of only two men in the area to receive honorary memberships
in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Harry E. Crosby Post 2472 of the Town of
Tonawanda conferred the honor on Mr. Mang and Willis E. Elliott, former town
peace justice.
Surviving are three other brothers, Lt. Louis G. Mang of the town police
force: Winthrop A. of Buena Park, Calif., and Edward L. Mang. Newfane, and
three grandchildren, Ronald, Michael and Linda Wozniak.
Mr. Mang's wife, Mrs. Mary Rose Bauer Mang, died in February
1962

Barker Fire Chief Loses
Life While Fighting Blaze
BARKER, July-27—Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at theHood
Funeral Home for Howard I, Mang, 60, of Quaker road, chief of theBarker
Volunteer Fire Company for 11 years, who was killed yesterday(July 26, 1955)
when hit by a truck while he was fighting a grass firein Lake road, three
miles east of Somerset Corners.
Dr. Walter Altbach, Niagara County coroner, said Chief Mang died of abroken
neck.
Somerset Lodge, F&AM, will  hold memorial services tomorrow at 7:30p.m.
interment will be in Hartland Central Cemetery.
According to Sgt. John Ginty of the sheriffs office, Chief Mang wasstruck by
the rear of a truck which skidded when the driver, WilliamA. Reynard of
Buffalo, applied the brakes. The impact reportedly threwhim about 20 feet into
a ditch.
Truck Skids
The accident occured about 5:30 last night when Chief Mang and thefire company
responded to a grass fire on the V. A. Harrison farm inLake Rd. Although the
fire had been extinguished, the chief andseveral others decided to wet down a
small area which was stillsmoldering.
Sgt. Ginty said the fire truck was standing on one side of the roadand Chief
Mang's car on the other. The chief and two other firemen,James Murphy and
Russell Leonard, were between the two vehicles.
One truck passed safely but the Reynard vehicle skidded as the driverdecided
he could not make it and applied the brakes, according to Sgt.Ginty.  Chief
Mang was struck and his auto was knocked across theroad.  The other two
firemen were not injured.
Served in World War I
A charter member and past commander of the Herbert W. Carr Post No.425 of the
American Legion, Chief Mang was active in  Legion affairs.He was a member of
Somerset Lodge No. 639, F & AM, and the NiagaraCounty Fire Chiefs Assn.
A veteran of World War 1, he was awarded the Purple Heart. During hiswar
service, he was overcome with mustard gas, the effects of whichbothered him in
later years.
Chief Mang was the son of the late Winfield W. Mang and Louise Mang.He was
born in Buffalo and came to Barker 40 years ago as a young man.He was a
carpenter by trade and did some contract work.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha Hass Mang, and five brothers, Elmer C.Mang,
Kenmore, police chief of the Town of Tonawanda;Winfield A. Mang,who is Niagara
County childrens clerk and a former deputy sheriff;Clarence H. Mang, a former
Barker mayor, Charles H. Mang, retiredBuffalo fireman, and Edward L. Mang, all
of Barker.

Mang, Isadore, Buffalo, one of six sons and three daughters of Peterand
Margaret Mang, natives of France, was born in Buffalo, N. Y.,February 19,
1844. Peter Mang, born in 1808, followed his trade asweaver until 1840, when
he came to Buffalo, where he engaged infarming, owning several small farms in
the city limits and one offorty-five acres across the line in Tonawanda. He
was a Democrat anddied in 1885, leaving a valuable estate and his sons well
providedfor. His first wife died in 1875. Isadore Mang attended the
publicschools, assisted his father in clearing and working the farms, andwhen
twenty-one rented a farm and afterwards bought one. In 1880 hebuilt a hotel
near the city line on Delaware avenue, in Tonawanda,which he successfully
conducted for eleven years. when he sold thesite, which comprised twenty-two
acres, for advanced figures. In 1894he erected the present Hotel de Mang, at
No. 2662 Delaware avenue, andin 1897 placed his son in charge and retired from
active life. He isinterested in real estate and in the Brush Brewing Company
ofTonawanda, and in politics is a Democrat. He married Abigail, daughterof
Hanan Colvin of Buffalo, and their children are Winfield, Laura,Flora, and
Maybell. His hotel and premises is a well known and popularresort for
wheelmen.

afternoon at 1 o'clock at the late home, Greek road, Barker,with the Rev. E.
J. Fleury, pastor, Methodist Episcopal church,Newfane, officiating, assisted
by the Rev. W. J. Harrington, local M.E. pastor.
Services followed at Forest Lawn cemetery chapel, Buffalo, conductedby Buffalo
Trinity I. O. O . F. lodge, of which Mr. Mang had been amember for over forty
years. Interment was made at that cemetery.
Mr. Mang formerly resided at Buffalo.
Although in ill health for several years past the end came suddenlyMonday
evening while Mr. Mang was busy about the house.  Surviving arehis wife and
six sons, Elmer of Kenmore, Charles of Buffalo, Winfleldand Clarence of
Barker, and Howard and Edward at home, also twograndsons.

Cpl. Harold I. Mapes, 23, an army machine gunner, was killed in action April 8
in north Africa, his mother, Mrs. Carl F. Gustafson, 428 Dawson street, was
informed Saturday by the war department.
Corporal Mapes, who enlisted for service in April, 1941, left Waterlooon May
5. He had been stationed in north Africa since February 1943. Before enlisting
he was employed by the Rath Packing company. He was born March 7, 1920, in
Waterloo, the son of Orville and Edith Mapes. His father is dead. Harold Mapes
attended West public schools. On June 10, 1939, he married Valda M. Newell.
They were later divorced.
Corporal Mapes attended Union Congregational church.
The only survivor is his mother.
Pfc. Ervin L. Laures of Waterloo was slightly wounded in action in the north
African are on April 8, his wife, Susie, 1535 Hawthorne avenue, was informed
Saturday by a telegram from the adjutant general, Washington D. C. He was in
the infantry, and entered the army two years ago. He was formerly employed by
the Rath Packing plant.

A Purple Heart medal for military merit has been awarded posthumously to Cpl.
Harold I. Mapes, Waterloo, who was killed in action April 8 in north Africa,
his mother, Mrs. Carl F. Gustafson, 428 Dawson street,reported Tuesday.
She received the medal Monday from the army quartermaster depot at
Philadelphia, Pa.
Mapes was an army machine gunner. Mrs. Gustafson said she was told by another
soldier who was in an outfit with her son that when he was killed Corporal
Mapes was at the head of a group of men going into action.
Harold Mapes enlisted for service in April, 1941, and left Waterloo the next
month. He had been stationed in north Africa since last February. He had been
an employe of the Rath Packing company.
Mrs. Gustafson was informed of her son's death on May 1.

4A]. Although she claimed to bemarried, something seems to have happened here.

PENDLETON -- Robert E. Maranville, 65, of Alexandria, died Fridaymorning after
a long illness.
A birthright member of the Friends Church, he was born Sept. 1, 1899,in
Pendleton to Robert E. and Elnora Swain Maranville. A brother,Charles
Maranville of Hanover survives him.
Friends will be received after 10 a.m. today at the Cornell BrightFuneral
Home. Graveside rites will be held in Friends Cemetery east ofPendleton.

(Copy is extremely difficult to read so some information maynot be correct.) 
She was born in Madawaski, Maine.  She was born Feb21, 1866 and was 84 years,
8 months and 19 days of age at time ofdeath.  She was a widow.  Her father's
name was William Markey.  Hermother's name was Margaret Lagasse.  The death
certificate wascompleted by Bernard Thompson.  Leane was buried November 12,
1950(death being Nov 10, 1950).  She died in her daughter Pearl's home.

Mrs. Leona McKinney Dies Mohawk Area Resident:
Mohawk - Mrs. Leona McKinney, 84 - died yesterday in the home of herdaughter,
Mrs. Bernard Thompson, Fulmer Creek Road after a longillness.  Funeral
services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. at the homeof her daughter, with Rev.
Fred G. Cotman, Herkimer, MethodistMinister, officiating.  Burial will be in
the Salisbury Cemetery.Mrs. McKinney Feb 21, 1886 - in Madwaski, ME.,
(Madawaska is spelledwrong in obit.).  A daughter of William & Margaret
Lagasse (Servant)Markey, and attended schools there.  Her marriage took place
in Holton(another mistake as it is Houlton, Forest City).  He died in
1929.After their marriage, the couple lived in Pennsylvania for severalyears. 
Mr. McKinney was engaged in lumbering operations until 1915when they moved to
Salisbury Center and conducted a hotel.  Mrs.McKinney was of Methodist church
and was active in civil affairs.Besides her daughter, she leaves two sons,
Jefferson, Herkimer, andClarence, Cranberry Lake.  22 grandchildren and four
greatgrandchildren.

Mary, daughter of Zene and Bernice (Kirkham) Markham, was born June 7,1923, in
Kirkham Valley, rural Augusta. She married Edgar Colvin onJuly 11, 1940. Mary
lived most of her life in the Augusta area, whereshe had been employed at the
Egg Mart in the 1940s, Augusta NursingHome and Augusta Bakery; and she retired
after working with the GreenThumb Project at the Augusta Senior Center. Over
the years she hadalso worked at the Fairchild Nursing Home, Elsie's Cafe in
Fall Creek,bartended, and earlier in her life, did farm work on the Sieg
farmsoutside of Augusta.
She is survived by her son, Melvin "Jim" and Sharon Colvin of Augusta;three
grandchildren, Jeannine Colvin of Syracuse, N.Y., Howard (Carla)Colvin of
Miami, Fla., Joseph (Phalle) Colvin of Livingston, Mont.;six
great-grandchildren, Brian, Abbey, Kaitlyn and Grace, all ofMiami, Fla.,
Theresa of Missoula, Mont., and Danny of Livingston,Mont.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Zene Markham and BerniceMarkham
Zell; and grandchildren, Theresa and James Colvin.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, September 28, 2006, at 11a.m. at the
Anderson Funeral Home, with burial in the East LawnCemetery, both in Augusta.
Friends may call one hour prior to servicesat the funeral home.
