father, Thomas Humphrey, was born near London, Englandwhere he resided until
about the year 1847, when he came to America. He was like many another
Englishman, when a young man he married thegirl of his heart's choice, and was
disinherited. He learned thecarpenter's craft and on coming to America,
followed that trade inPittsburg and Beaver, Pa., until his death, which
occurred at Beaver,in 1850. About the year 1840, he married Miss Anna White,
of Windsor, near London, England where she was born, and where her
parentsresided. In 1852 she married her second husband, John C. Smith,
withwhom she came to Adrian. She was the mother of eight children, four byeach
husband. She died in Palmyra, this county, November 7, 1860.George Humphrey,
the subject of this sketch, was left an orphan in hiseleventh year, and became
a township charge, but was indentured by theCounty Poor Commissioners to W. H.
Colvin of Palmyra, where heremained until he was nineteen, when he purchased
his remaining twoyears' time of service. No orphan was ever more fortunate in
finding agood home, or kinder or more sincere friends, than were Mr. and
Mrs.Colvin. During his service there he was allowed three months'schooling
each year. He became so anxious for an education, that in1869 he became a
student of Adrian College, where he remained twoyears. In the spring of 1871
he entered the scientific department ofHillsdale College, where he remained
for two terms, when his healthfailed him and he was obliged to abandon study
for a time. In the fallof 1871 he purchased his present farm home on Sections
8-5 in Palmyratownship, this county. Following this purchase he taught six
terms inthe graded school at Palmyra village. His farm consists of 166
acreswhich, since his marriage, he has given intelligent and
successfulattention. At the age of eighteen years he became a convert of
thePalmyra Presbyterian church, and being of a spiritual and religiousnature,
made deep and fervent study of all moral and religiousthought. He was called
to the ministry by the congregation, whichpetitioned the Presbytery to license
him to fill its pulpit with theend in view that he be ordained and installed
as its pastor. In thespring of 1889 he was licensed to preach, and after
taking thenecessary course of study in theology, he was ordained and
installed. For a period of five years he was the stated supply of the
BlissfieldPresbyterian church. The Palmyra Presbyterian church is known as
oneof the most prosperous in Lenawee County. March 21, 1872, GeorgeHumphrey

Notes for James B. HUNT

He married Ellen King 2nd.

OBITUARY: "Sandy Creek News" [Oswego Co., NY] March 12, 194
JAMES HUNT
The angel of death has again visited and taken from our midst one of
Lacona's most respected citizens. James Hunt was born in Frankfort, N.Y. 1842,
and at the age of two years moved with his parents to Boylston, Oswego County,
N.Y. where he resided until three years ago last October, when on account of
failing health he gave up farming and came to Lacona to live. He was married
to Mary A. Colvin, March 11, 1866. Two children blessed this union: Mrs. Mary
Rowe, deceased, and Mrs. Ettie Stowell, deceased.
In the year, 1874, his wife died and in April, 1876, he married Ellen J.
King, who with six grandchildren survive to mourn the loss of a loving husband
and grandparent.
He was a veteran of the Civil War; having enlisted September 15, 1864, in
Company K, 184th regiment, New York State Volunteers, under Col. W.G.
Robinson. He was honorably discharged at City Point, Va., June 29 1865 by
reason of close of war. He was always active in the political affairs of his
home town, having served as justice of the peace for over thirty years. He was
a member of Lacona grange and A.J. Barney post.
He was able to be about until two weeks ago, when he was taken worse and
failed rapidly until the end came March 6th. Besides his immediate family he
leaves one brother, Dr. Edward Tanner, of Nebraska and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah
Doneburgh, of Syracuse and Mrs. E.M. Halsey, of Wolcott, N.Y. The funeral was
held from his late home March 9, at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Charles Woodley
officiating.

The relatives wish to return thanks for the many favors and acts of kindness
shown by their many friends in the hour of their bereavement.

-We shall meet, but we
  shall miss him
- There will be one vacant chair,
We shall linger to caress him
-When we breathe our evening prayer
