Gerald Foster - Died Monday morning, December 31, 2001 athis residence. Gerald
was born August 15, 1929 in Fulton, Michigan, ason of Ray B. and Nellie P.
(Forester) Foster. During the KoreanConflict, he served with the U.S. Marines
until his retirement. He hadbeen a Otsego/Plainwell area resident most of his
life, and was a lifemember of the V.F.W. and D.A.V. He was preceded in death
by hisparents; 4 brothers; 4 sisters; a granddaughter; a nephew; and
astep-son. In May of 1962, he was united in marriage to Arildia
M.(Colvin-Owen) Foster, who survives. Also surviving are 2step-children,
Arberta (Howard) Spencer of Otsego, and Essie (Kenneth)Kirvan of Comstock; a
step-daughter-in-law, Debbie Owen of Plainwell;4 granddaughters; 2 grandsons;
10 great-granddaughters; 4 great-grandsons; a great-great-grand-daughter; a
great-great-grandson; asister, Betty (Terry) King of South Haven; a
sister-in-law, BarbaraFoster of Plainwell; and several nieces, nephews, and
cousins.Services will be held 1 o'clock Saturday from the Langeland
FamilyFuneral Homes Memorial Chapel 622 S. Burdick St. 343-1508 with theRev.
Mr. Dan Roxbury, of Reach Out For Christ Church, Holland, MI,officiating.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. Intermentwill be in Mt. Ever-Rest

HARVEY KLAPP FOWLER.
Judge Harvey Klapp Fowler, the oldest lawyer in active practice insouthern
Vermont, is also master in chancery and deputy county clerk,offices which he
has held for more than forty consecutive years. Hewas born in Poughkeepsie,
New .York, January 1, 1818, a son of JacobFowler. His great-grandfather. Jacob
Fowler, first of the name, was born and reared in Westchester county, New
York, but removed toUnionvale, Dutchess county, New York, where he purchased
eight hundredacres of land, from which he improved a farm, living there
theremainder of his days.
Harvey K. Fowler received his elementary education in the schools ofVerbank,
Dutchess county. On August 20, 1837. he came to Manchester.Vermont, and took a
course of study at the Burr and Burton Seminary,spending four years in that
institution, during two years of the timeteaching school in the winter terms.
In 1841 he began the study of lawwith Sergeant & Miner, the senior member of
the firm afterward beinglieutenant governor of Vermont, while Mr. Miner
represented hisdistrict in Congress. Mr. Fowler was admitted to the bar in
1843, an('a* once entered into a co-partnership with Leonard Sergeant,
becomingjunior member of the firm of Sergeant & Fowler, which stood at thehead
of the legal profession for several years. In 1852 Mr. Harveyformed a
partnership with the late Daniel Roberts, of Burlington, withwhom he
continued, three years, when he bought out the interest of Mr.Roberts, and has
since continued alone. On his admission to the bar in1843, ne was appointed
registrar of probate, and, the judge being alayman, Judge Fowler performed the
duties pertaining to his office forhim for a number of terms, afterwards
holding the office of judgehimself at different times for a period covering
twenty-eight years,and up to his eighty-second year of age, when he retired.
On resigninghis office, in a most felicitous address to the convention
assembledhe nominated his successor. Judge Edgerton, of whom a brief sketch
maybe found elsewhere in this work. While in office Judge Fowler waseminently
successful, none of his decisions having been reversed, andnone of his acts
beh1g censured.
In 1860 Judge Fowler was appointed deputy county clerk by Samuel H.Blackmer,
and has held the office continuously until the present day,also being master
in chancery since his admission to the bar. As ageneral law practitioner he
has been professionallv interested in manyimportant cases, assisting, among
others, in the trial of Jesse C.Davenport for the murder of Samuel Wilson, the
Judge being on thedefense; the defendant was sent to the Asylum for the
Insane, fromwhich he was discharged. He was also one of the defenders of
Cole,Reeves and Fitzgerald, who were arrested for the burning of a factoryand
other buildings in Bennington, but were acquitted. He took thetestimony in the
celebrated Railway Bond case, in Bennington, spendingseventy-eight days and
crippling one hand, the testimony coveringfourteen hundred typewritten pages.
On January 1, 1844. Judge Fowler married Mary J. Noble, who was bornin Hebron,
Ver
mont, a daughter of Luke Noble and his wife, Martha (Sergeant) Noble.Martha
Sergeant was a daughter of Dr. John Sergeant, and a linealdescendant in the
fifth generation from William Sergeant, who camefrom England in 1638, was made
a freeman in Malden, .Massachusetts,and was a lay preacher for several years.
The line was continuedthrough his son. John; the next in line of descent being
Isaac; thenJohn, father of Martha, who became the wife of Luke Noble. Dr.
JohnSergeant died at the age of eightyeight years. He was a leadingphysician
and a citizen of much prominence. His wife was Delight Bell.One of the
Sergeant family was Lieutenant Governor Leonard Sergeant,who married Phrebe
Raymond, who was born in Dorset, Vermont, in July,1793. and died in 1836.
Delight Sergeant, a sister of LieutenantGovernor Sergeant, went as a
missionary to the Cherokee Indians inGeorgia, where she married an Indian
chief. Flias C. Boudinott, whobuilt a fine house in Mississippi, where they
were forced to settle,but on account of hostility in the tribe he was killed
by an enemy,and she returned with her six children to Vermont, and lived
inManchester until her death in 1894. Judge and Mrs. Fowler became theparents
of four children: Frances J., Warren, Edmund H. and Joseph W.
Frances J. Fowler is a woman of culture and refinement, and for manyyears was
a teacher of art, having pupils first in White Plains, NewYork, then in
Kentucky, and later in Peace Institute, Raleigh, NorthCarolina. She is an
accomplished linguist as well as an artist, havingstudied the German language
in Germany, where she went in company witha German lady whose father was a
general in the Prussian army, at thesame time taking lessons in Italian. She
subsequently taught art inWells College, where Miss Frances Folsom (later Mrs.
Grover Cleveland)was her pupil, afterwards becoming one of the faculty at
DruryCollege, where she remained four vears. She then made a second
tripabroad, visiting Palestine. Greece. Italy, and going as far north asthe
North Cape. Since her return to Manchester in 1898. she has builta fine
residence in the village.
Warren Fowler, who is engaged in the insurance business in WestLebanon, New
York, married Marv T- Finch, by whom he has fourchildren, namely: Mary;
Frances, wife of Henry Bull, proprietor of agrocery, has one child, Dorothy;
Warrena: and Edwina. Edmund H.Fowler, a farmer in Sunderland, Vermont, married
Sybil Woodcock, and they have three children. Joseph W. Fowler, a lawyer and
insuranceagent in Manchester Center, married Hattie Dole, who died, leaving
onechild, Arthur. He then married Hattie Walker, by whom he has twochildren,
Paul W. and Earle. Mrs. Judge Fowler died September 7, 1902.
Judge Fowler is a Republican in politics. He has been identified withthe
Masonic order for more than half a century, and belongs toAdoniram Lodge, F. &
A. M., of which he is past master; to AdoniramChapter, R. A. M., of which he
is past high priest; to the Order ofthe Eastern Star, F. & A. M. He is also an
Odd Fellow, being theoldest member of the lodge at Factory Point.

and there spent his life, dying about 1866. He inherited aportion of the
parental homestead, on which he was successfullyengaged in farming during his
years of activity. Of his union withPhoebe Vail, a native of the same town,
six children were born, asfollows: Phoebe; Israel; William: Jacob, father of
Judge Fowler;Joseph; and Hubbard. Both parents were members of the Baptist
church.

Jacob Fowler, third, was born on the ancestral homestead, January 7,1784, and
was educated in the schools of Unionvale and at Washington.New York. He began
life for himself as clerk in a store, andsubsequentlv went into business on
his own account as a merchant,continuing until 1812. when he settled on a
farm, at Unionvale, nearPoughkeepsie, and was there employed as a tiller of
the soil until ashort time before his death, when he sold his estate. He died
in 1849.aged sixty-six years. He married Ruth Klapp. a native of
Freedom,Dutchess county. New York, daughter of Jesse I. Klapp,
andgranddaughter of Stephen Klapp-, a prominent miller of Dover, NewYork.
Jesse I. Klapp was born and brought up in Dover, New York, butsettled
permanently in Freedom (now La Grange). New York, where hebought a large tract
of land, erected a grist mill, and was engaged infarming and milling until his
death, in 1828. Of his union with SusanBaldwin, a native of Dutchess county,
six children were, born, namely:Elisha; Isaac: Susan; Ruth, mother of Judge
Fowler; Mary, who marriedJoseph Weeks, of New York; and Caroline, who became
the wife ofGilbert I. Vincent. The mother of these children was a Quaker.
Afterher death Mr. Klapp married again. Jacob Fowler and. his wife, RuthKlapp,
became the parents of thirteen children, five sons and eightdaughters, Harvey
K. being the fifth child. ()ne son, Nathaniel.Fowler, served in the Civil war
as captain of Company K, Twenty-SecondNew York Volunteer Infantry, and took
part in the battle of Antietam.The mother died in 1847, aged fiftysix years.

James Ransom "Rance" served with his brothers Thomas and Joseph andhis nephew
John C. in Company I, 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment.While in the war, Rance
was declared missing in late 1863 and presumeddead.  Rance had married Sarah
J. Deavours in 1859 and they had twindaughters before he went into the war. 
His wife Sarah passed away in1863 and the twins stayed with their grandmother
Abigail Deavours.

OBITUARY - COLVIN
Mrs. Leone Jeanette Colvin, nee Fowler, was born to Mr. and Mrs.Arthur Fowler,
at Elroy, June 10, 1895.
She was married to Theodore Colvin, March 10, 1914.  They first livedin Elroy. 
Later they moved to Wyeville and then to Wonewoc and in1928 they took up their
residence in Madison where they have sinceresided.
After a lingering illness that dates back almost tow years she died atthe
Madison hospital just before midnight, Monday, February 19, at theage of 44
years, 8 months, and 9 days.
Survivors are the husband, Theodore Colvin, four sons, Merrill, Lynnand
Donald, at home, and Rexford, who is serving as coast guard in theUnited
States Army at Ft. Stevens, Oregon.   Three brothers alsosurvive, David
Fowler, Elroy, Lloyd Fowler, Janesville, and HenryFowler, Milwaukee.
Mrs. Colvin's testimony the week before she died was that she wascontinually
looking to the Lord for her helper.
The text used at her funeral service last Friday in Madison was takenfrom
Psalms 121, emphasizing the second verse: "My help cometh fromthe Lord, which
made heaven and earth."
Funeral services in Elroy were held at the Mueller Funeral Parlor withthe Rev.
A.M. Rusten officiating, interment was in the Elroy Cemetery.
Out of town people who attended the funeral included Mr. and Mrs.Henry Fowler,
and two daughters, of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. LloydFowler, Janesville; Della
and Louie Kinickmyer, Mr. and Mrs. NormanWoll; Mr. Klingle, Stella Pertshorn,
Jeanette Butterfield, Mrs. AgnesGraack and son, Swen Swenson, Irene Zepla,
Elaine Burnson, BasilPeterson, Ronald Brown, Robert Olson, Eugene Dugan,
Alfred Neibuhr,Jerry Braund, Lyle Wszeke, Betty Dayes, Mr. and Mrs. S. Risley,
Jas.Dugan, all of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Russel Colvin, and Mr. and Mrs.Byron
Colvin of Wonewoc.  Several friends from Wyesville were alsopresent
