Silas was one of the first settlers of Stephenson County. He was thesecond
child of Isaac Vail Gage and Polly Lozier. He assisted hisfather in running
their farm in Pennsylvania and in tilling the landremaining in his native
state until the spring of 1835, then, startingfor the West, he first embarked
on a raft on the Allegheny, whence hemoved up the Ohio to Cincinattie, where
he took a steamer to Galena. After six weeks spent in Daviess County, he came
over the line intoStephenson on foot, crossing the pecatonica River on the
15th of May.He was still unmarried and made his home at various places in
thatneighborhood. There was at that time one log cabin on the site ofpresent
day Winslow. Freeport was nowhere, and there were noindications of the village
of Lena for twenty years after.
Young Silas worked by the month, lived economically and saved hiswages, and in
due time purchased a yoke of oxen and made a claim tothe land which later
constituted his lifelong homestead. In 1836 heerected a log cabin on his
claim, the lumber being sawed at WinslowMill. This dwelling was erected after
the fashion of those days with a"shaker" roof, but with a plank floor, the
first of its kind in thecounty. A large fireplace extended nearly across one
side, and thechimney was built without sticks or mud. To this modest abode
heconducted his bride in November of that year. This dwellingconstituted the
early home of their children, who were born beneathits roof and played about
the doors shaded by hop vines, until 1857,when the erection of a more modern
structure was begun.
When Silas first came to Winslow, the nearest market and supply depotwas at
Galena, whose mines were being worked by numbers of menrequiring the the farm
produce of the area to sustain them. Wild gamewas plenty including so many
turkeys as to be troublesome. Thischanges fairly rapidly though, as
civilization advanced in the area, and soon game was hard to come by.
Silas was an early member of the Whig party, but upon its demisebecame a
staunch Republican. His family regulary attended the UnitedBrethren Church.

Notes for Flora GALBRAITH

Colvin, Flora (Galbraith)
Mrs. Flora Colvin, widow of William Colvin, died at her home inSchellsburg
Sunday morning. The deceased was born at Birmingham, Pa.,on December 5, 1820,
and was a daughter of William and EllenGalbraith, who died many years ago.
On February 8, 1842, she wasmarried to William Covin. This union was blessed
with ten children, eight of whom survive - Eliza M., wife of James H. Miller,
deceased;Jennie C., wife of S. W. Keyser; Emma A., wife of H. N.
Shoemaker;William G., Harry J., Clara Mae, widow of the late W. P. Whitmore,
M.D., all of Schellsburg; Ella C., wife of James P. Shoemaker, ofBuffalo
Mills; and Annie K., wife of Jere S. Blymyer, of Bedford. Herhusband died in
1898. Some interesting events have occurred inthe parlor of the Colvin
homestead. Here Mr. and Mrs. Colvin weremarried, and afterward it was the
scene of the marriage of six oftheir daughters and of the wedding receptions
given to two of theirsons, and in 1892 the "golden wedding" of Mr. and Mrs.
Colvin wascelebrated in the same room. The funeral services were
heldTuesday morning and were conducted by Rev. H. B. Townsend, pastor ofthe
Presbyterian church of Bedford. The body was laid to rest in theSchellsburg
cemetery. In early life Mrs. Colvin joined theMethodist church, but
after her marriage, with her husband, she unitedwith the Presbyterian church.
During her long, patient, peacefullife, she saw few idle hours. Every rolling
sun witnessed acts ofkindness and self-sacrificing devotion in her humble walk
of life. Sheextended the gentle offices of love far beyond the borders of her
ownfamily. Her feet were never slow to carry her to scenes of hunger, pain,
sickness, sorrow and bereavement. When her hands had grown toofeeble for her
usual household duties, she spent her time principallyin holy meditations. In
the closing days af her life, every breathseemed to be a prayer. Had any one
merely breathed a doubt in herpresence, in regard to any of God's precious
promises, she would havebeen startled. She never retired at night without
praying for herfamily and naming each one by name before the throne. Nothing
everpleased her better than to have her children around her. [Source:The
