From 50th Wedding Anniversary article. "Pulaski Democrat" [Pulaski, New York] 18 Mar 1948, p. 12. A very quiet celebration occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. LewisMathews, on Box street, Sunday, to honor Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C.Colvin at dinner, whose 50th wedding anniversary was observed Tuesday,March 16. Because of Mrs. Colvin's ill health, only the immediatemembers of the family were present, who included Mr. and Mrs. W.Taylor Barr and son William, Mr. and Mrs. Orr Calkins of Canton, andMr. and Mrs. Lewis Mathews, and two cousins of Mr. Colvin, Mrs. GeorgeThayer and Mrs. Fred Vallier of Watertown. Another grandson, RichardCalkins, who is in Germany was unable to attend. Emma J. Wiley and Arthur C. Colvin were married in Lacona Wednesday,March 16, 1898, at the home of Mrs. Edward Miles sister of Mrs.Colvin. The Rev. Myron G. Seymour of the Methodist church, Lacona, officiated. To this union four daughters were born, three of whom areliving, Mrs. Opal Mathews, Mrs. Dora Barr of this village, and Mrs.Gladys Calkins of Canton. Except for the first two years of theirmarried life which was spent in Lacona, they have lived in Pulaski. Both Mr. and Mrs. Colvin have been active in lodge work, Mrs. Colvinhaving been Noble Grand of Rising Sun Rebekah lodge, No. 149, in theyear 1926. Mr. Colvin is a Past chief Patriarch of the Salmon RiverEncampment, No. 31, I.O.O.F, last year. He joined the Iroquois lodgein Lacona, 50 years ago. They also have their hobbies as well as their accomplishments,"fiddling" being Mr. Colvin's chief hobby since a boy of l3 when hefirst started playing at dances. He was noted as one of the bestcallers for square dances, in this community. Mrs. Colvin alwaysaccompanied him at the piano. Years ago they played for the Firemen'sBall and lodge activities, and at surrounding towns and villages onvarious occasions. "Art," as he was known to old and young, could play for, call anddirect the old fashioned quadrille, opera, real and money muck in a most pleasing manner. He was also noted for his famousrendition of "The Mocking Bird" and many old fashioned waltzes on theviolin. Since Mrs. Colvin has been unable to accompany him the past 10or 12 years, he has given up calling, but would on occasion, play forentertainment. Mrs. Colvin's hobbies besides her musical ability, was making cookies. Her mmolasses and sugar cookies were on sale at a local store forabout eight years, reaching nearly every state in the union, and someof the boys who were over-seas during the war. Her cookies have also taken first prize at the local Grange bakingcontest and at the county Grange contest. Since she discontinued thecookie business, she has had more time to devote to her crochet work, much of which she has had sale for, consisting of tablecloths, afghans, chair sets, doilies and aprons.
