MRS. B. A. BOON DEAD Aged Pioneer woman succumbs to illness. Mrs. Betsey Ann SURRARRER BOON died at the house of her son Charles, Saturday afternoon following a three weeks illness. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church Oak Grove, Monday at 11 a.m. and interment was made in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Boon was born in New York State, near Buffalo, in July 1837, and came to Michigan with her parents when nine years old. At the age of 17 she married at her home in Croton township to Thos. Wiggins and to them were born three sons and two daughters. Mrs. Martin Miller, of Croton township, is the only child from this union living near here now. Mr. Wiggins was killed in the Civil War, and later she married James Boon who died suddenly 15 years ago from an accident. To this union was born Lydia, John D., Charles, and Harry. Mrs. Boon was a kind and indulgent mother and obliging neighbor and had many friends. ![]() Notes: Betsey's parents were James R. Surrarrer and Ann Wright (1810, Bethel, Vermont -1897, Oak Grove, Newaygo Co., Michigan). Her Grandparents were James Surrarrer (abt 1765-abt1865) and Lydia Louise ?(1796-1874) ![]() ![]() Anna WRIGHT SURRARRER Newaygo Republican June 3, 1897 OAK GROVE Mrs. James Surrarrer died Wednesday night, May 26 at the home of her daughter where she had gone that day for a visit. The funeral was held at Oak Grove Church, Saturday afternoon, Rev. W. Aldrich officiating. An unusally large number of sympathizing friends were present. Grandma Surrarrer was born in Bethel, Vt, 1810 and was married in 1831. By this death Oak Grove loses one of the oldest settlers, one of its best neighbors and a faithful sister in Christ. The original is in the possession of Kathryn (Wiggins) Stralnic of Adrian, MI. (Dau of Kenneth Clair Wiggins). There was no date on it, but I know from census records that in 1920 she was 38 yrs old, so this had to be sometime in 1947. Eliz. is the wife of Ralph L. Wiggins (son of Charles Wiggins), ![]() ![]() Pfc. JAMES BOON Killed in Action In Southern France GRADUATED FROM LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL IN 1937 Pfc. James Boon, 25, was killed in action on Nov. 29, the day he had previously been reported missing. He was with the 7th army in Southern France. Born Jan. 7, 1919, he had spent all his life in the community, graduating from Howard City High school in 1937. Pfc. Boon entered the service of his country on Dec. 12, 1942 and trained at Camp Howze, Texas, and at Camp Clariborne, La. before going overseas last spring. He will be remembered for his quiteness and his ready smile. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mattie Boon; three sisters, Mrs. Estella Owen of Michigan City, Ind., Mrs. Alma Phillips of Sand Lake, Mrs. Millie Schnick of Howard City; four brothers, John of Grand Rapids and Martin, Frank and George of Howard City. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family. ![]() Note: Following is an obit that I copied. This Kenneth Wiggins is the gr grandson of Samuel. I have his death date as 12-22-1944. I do not know the exact date of the obit or what paper it came from. Probably the Adrian MI newpaper. Kenna (Wiggins) Fetherolf ![]() ![]() Kenneth Wiggins Kenneth Wiggins died yesterday at 10:15 o'clock in his home in Raisin township where he had lived for the last 28 years. His death was the result of a two year illness with __(unreadable)__ disease. He was 67 years old. Mr. Wiggins was born in Riga township December 18.1873. He is survived by his wife Clara, two sons, Maynard Wiggins of Newport, Ind., a Clair Wiggins of Adrian, one daughter, Constance, at home, three grandchildren and one brother, Ralph Wiggins of Toledo. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Everiss Funeral Home, the Rev. Harry T. Green of Raisin Center officiating. The burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. ![]() ![]() LYDIA LOUISE SURRARRER wife of JAMES SURRARRER SR. Grindstone City Advertiser By W. H. Pearce Editor and Proprietor Berea, Ohio Friday morning April 17, 1874 Strongville Died-----At the home of her son, April 10, 1874 of pneumonia, Mrs. Lydia Surrarrer, aged 78 years. She had of late years retained remakedly good health until her present illness. the deceased was born in N.Y. State, in 1796, and married to Mr. James Surrarrer, her late husband, at the age of eleven years. Her eldest child being only thirteen years younger than herself. Mr. Surrarrer was aged forty-two when married. they had been united in wedlock for fifty-seven years he departed this life at the good old age of 99 years and five months. Mrs. Surrarrer united with the Baptist Church at the age of 30, and was a consistent and devoted Christian. With a mind largely endowed with superior graces, great force of character, and a loving heart deeply embued with the devine spirit, and consecrated to his service. ![]() ![]() July 3, 1908 Berea Advertiser Berea, Ohio Friday evening Your correspondent had a pleasant interview Tuesday with the oldest citizen of Strongville township. Was greeted cheerfully by the old gentleman who was comfortably seated in a rocker in the shade of a tree, and invited to a seat near by a large collection of hives of bees. The hum of the bees did not interfere with the pleasant chat. We learned that this old gentleman had passed his 90th mile stone. Monday June 29th. This citizen is Mr. V.R. Surrarrer, that in former years was one of the most active persons in the town. he stated that he was born June 29th, 1818, the same year that Queen Victoria was born, at Fort Ann Township, N.Y. His mother was married at the age of eleven years, and was the fourth child in the family of five children. Was married to Miss Catherine Weller in the Spring of 1837, and came to Ohio the same year. He came at the time the country was a dense forest to make a home. He has chopped and cleared about 75 acres of the primeval forest and converted by his fine fertile fields. He has never been addicted to the use of tobacco or whiskey. Boys, if you want to live to be 90 yrs. old, refrain from the evils of tobacco and whiskey. ![]() ![]() Berea Advertiser October 16, 1908 Mr. V.R. Surrarrer was born June 29, 1818 at Fort Ann, N.Y. He was married to Catherine Eliza Weller, of the same place, August 6, 1838. To this union were born eleven children of whom seven have preceded him to the better world. His wife died Oct. 20th, 1886. He leaves one son and three daughters to mourn his loss. Mrs. Wm Barlett of Strongville, Mrs. Caroline Thorpe, of Ottowa Co., Ohio, Mrs. Henry Boswor of Paulding Co., Ohio, and Mr. James Surrarrer with whom he lived when he died. In the fall of 1838 he along with his wife moved on a new farm on the west line of North Royalton. About the year 1845 he with his wife united with the Close Communion Baptist Church of Strongville. He was very particular with his family worship no matter what else there was to be done during the day. In 1846 he with his aged parents and his family moved to Michigan making the trip with a span of horses, one yoke of cows and one yoke of oxen making the trip in eleven days, camping on the road side in their covered wagon and getting their meals by campfire and on account of sickness in three years he came back and bought him a home in Strongville where he lived until the end. The funeral services was held in the Strongville M.E. Church Oct. - ; 1908. The sermon preached by the pastor Rev. Arthur H. Smith. Burial in the Strongville Cemetery. Among those attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Caroline Thorp of Ottowa Co., Mrs. B.L. Blackburn of Seville and Mrs. Jim King of Rittman, Ohio. ![]() Return To Wiggins Family |
