Ortensia Salsbury, daughter of Daniel and Fanny Salsbury was born in DeKalb County, Indiana, December 13, 1850. She came to Ohio in 1871. She was united in marriage January 12, 1873 to Smith VanValkenburg. To this union were born AI, who survives, and LULU who died at the age of 13 months. Soon after her marriage she moved to her present home and has lived there nearly 49 years. At an early age she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Fayette, where she has lived a faithful life, consistent with her beliefs. She has been a loving wife and mother, doing all in her power to make her family and home comfortable. She has been in failing health since 1883. Although she has been a great sufferer, she bore her pain with fortitude. In her last illness she was not confined to her bed, and on the morning of February 24, 1922, she slept peacefully away. Three brothers and four sisters have preceded her in death. She leaves two sisters and one brother, Jonathan Salsbury of Seneca, Michigan, a faithful husband, one son and two grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the late home Sunday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. S. T. Walker. The body was laid to rest in the Morenci cemetery.
