Pioneer Citizen Dead

John Goodwin, son of Edward and Elizabeth Goodwin, was born March 3rd, 1828, New Church, Radnershire, England, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Ashley Carter, Delta, Ohio August 20th , 1912, aged 84 years, 5 months and 17 days. He was the last surviving son of a family of five boys, one of whom died in youth and four in age. In 1850 two of the boys emigrated to New Zealand and John and his brother, Thomas came to the united States, landing at Huron, Erie county, Ohio, among strangers with but five dollars between them. In 1855 and again in 1858 he revisited the scenes of his childhood.

On October 30, 1861, he was united in marriage with Sallie Osborn, and to this union were born three children: Elizabeth, Minnie and John Jr., the latter of whom died in 1896. He leaves surviving him two daughters, Elizabeth King and Minnie Carter , and seven grand-children and one great grand-child.

He moved to Monclova, Lucas county, Ohio, in 1862. In 1883 he purchased the James Bruce farm near Delta, Ohio, where his wife died in 1899. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with Mrs. Ashley Carter, his daughter.

The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church, Rev. C. O. Callender preaching the funeral sermon.

He had one of those sunny dispositions that attracted people to him, and it falls to the lot of but few men to have so many friends as he. Everybody loved him.

He believed:
"The hand that gives is better far
      Than lips that pray,
Love is the bright and guiding star
      That leads the way
That shines not on vain World's of bliss,
But on a better world in this."

John Goodwin was an honest man.
