![]() Toledo, Ohio Post card addressed to: Mrs. C. P. Hopkins Rt. #2 Kibbie, Mich Sat. Nov. 7, '08 Dear Sis and Family Are all tore up and going to move Monday got three carpets down and some more to put down. I like are [sic] new home real well. That is Papa holding the Banner Lelia (Note: Mrs. C. P. Hopkins was Julia Ann (Mizer) Hopkins (Jan. 18, 1872 - April 20, 1951). Lelia was her sister, Leliah Mable (Mizer) Ohlinger (1892 - 1974). Julia & Leliah were sisters and also daughter of Jacob Sidney Miser (1843 - 1918). If the boy standing next to Jacob is a grandson, it could only be Paul W. Mizer, (1900 - 1972). The other grandsons would be too young in 1908. cpk) ![]() April 12, 2007 Dear Charlie Keller, The only info that I have is the following: Encamp #42 in Toledo, OH on 9/3-4/1908, GAR Commander-in-Chief Henry Martin Nevius, x He was from Jersey City, NJ at this time there were 225,157 GAR members, There was only one GAR encampment that was held in November, that was the first one in 1866. I am sorry, that we do not have any more information that. In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Ken Freshley James A. Garfield Camp #142 - Camp Council & PCC Dept. of Ohio - Commander & Signals Officer National Signals Officer and Webmaster SUVCW-Charitable Foundation Webmaster Note: I checked another web site, The Library of Congress, http://www.loc.gov/rr/main/gar/national/natlist.html and this page gives a listing of all the National Encampments and the number of members of the GAR at the time. For instance, in 1918 the membership was about 121,000. In 1935 the membership was about 6,200. The last Encampment was 1949 and the national membership was just 16. At the GAR peak in 1890, there were 409,000 members. Quite a political force! These number didn't include the Ladies Auxiliary, I forget the exact name of their organization. Even today, the members of the Sons, etc are quite dedicated and have state & national organizations. I'm sure if you wanted to join, being a descendant of Jacob Miser, there wouldn't be any problem. Their sign off phrase in all of their correspondence is always: In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Not a bad motto. Have a great day, Charlie |
