Josiah's obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, August 8, 1902.
Josiah McConnell, a resident of Lee Township and a long time subscriber to this paper, died at his home at McConnell's mill near Harlem Springs, July 29. He was born October 1, 1819, and spent his entire 83 years in the township in which he was born. He frequently spoke of remembering when deer were shot near his home. He was married in 1846 to Martha Shepherd, who died some years ago.
They had 11 children, 9 of whom still survive, as follows; Mrs. James Kelley of Lamartine; Mrs. Henry Yeager, George E., Howard and Wesley A., and Misses Ida and Eva McConnell -- all of Harlem Springs; John A. and William E. of Pittsburgh.
He was a friendly, affable man, who never seemed to care or worry about accumulating wealth. He was a democrat and subscriber to the Chronicle ever since it was established in 1871. He was reverent and respectful in religious matters, but only recently gave his name to the Methodist Church. The many friends attracted by his kindly spirit and the high esteem in which he was held was shown by the long concourse of people who followed his remains to the cemetery at Simmons' Ridge Church.
Martha's obituary in the Carroll Free Press, Carrollton, Ohio,
Wednesday, December 12, 1888. (Harlem Springs news section)
Mrs. Josiah McConnell, an aged and highly respected lady of our community, departed this life Friday morning, after a lingering illness from dropsy. Mrs. McConnell had been confined to her room for several years and bore her affliction as only a true Christian could. She was a woman loved and trusted by all her neighbors and friends, and whose memory will live with those who were acquainted with her. She was a devout member of the Methodist Church, and was always found in her place when it was possible for her to be there. She leaves a husband and nine children to mourn her loss.
(Note: If a date has before it "abt", that means that the year has been estimated from an age given on a Census report.)
