Cheryl Barnaby married me in 1967, and fortunately for me, we have been together ever since. We were blessed with two neat children and four grandchildren who we don’t get to see nearly often enough.
My son Chris was married but recently divorced and has a son Mike and a daughter Caroline. He is Vice President of Sales and Marketing for National Metal Abrasives and lives in Norwalk.
Jennifer is a teacher and lives in Sandusky. She is married to Andy Spitler, and they have two children. Abi is 13 already, and Austin is 10. By the way, Jennifer is a fine pure shooter of the basketball. She shot about 49% in high school. I could never shoot worth a darn, but I think I helped teach her.
My career began in 1968 when I started in a co-op program at Buckeye Steel Castings, while attending Ohio State. After graduating, with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, I progressed in the company and was their Chief Metallurgist at age 27. Cheryl, the kids, and I moved to Sandusky in 1978 and lived there for 18 years. I worked for 3 different companies while living there, 2 foundries and a chain plant. I was a quality assurance manager, a melting superintendent, and a product engineering manager. I moved to the chain industry because steel foundries were dying and have since died.
In 1996, I was lured from Union Chain to Jeffrey Chain in Morristown, Tennessee to be production manager at a roller chain facility. Cheryl and I really enjoyed East Tennessee. The Falls and Springs were long and lovely and Winters are mild. In fact I played golf virtually year round. We lived in the valley between the Cumberland Mountains and The Great Smokey Mountains, and it was truly beautiful. Jeffrey was bought out by Renold Chain and changed the direction of the company. We parted ways when I moved to Drives in 2000, to become Senior Manager of Engineering and Technical Services.
Drives is located in Fulton Illinois and we live in Morrison, which is about 12 miles East on Route 30. Fulton is actually on the Mississippi river about 150 miles west of Chicago. We have really enjoyed living here in Northwestern Illinois. Last year the company asked and I agreed to stay on another 10 years (The Good Lord Willing) so, there is another 9 years to go. On February 14, 2018 I will have been in industry for 50 years. That seems like a good stopping point.
Cheryl and I are very active in our Church and we both are Deacons this year (imagine that). Weather permitting, I play a lot of golf and I love to cook. After putting on about 80 pounds in the decades after high school, I started doing Adkins in 2003. I have lost over 40 pounds and kept it off 6 years. I cardio pretty much every day and I am not in too bad a shape.
I agree with Jeannie, my favorite memory is the summer school in ’62. Jeannie, Rosalee, Ed, Jim, George and I really had a lot of fun. I think the next best was the JV basketball team our sophomore year. We actually had a winning record.
