YONS HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS OF 1964 - 2009 MEMORY BOOK     PAGE 56.

BIOGRAPHY

2009 LYONS REUNION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FOR SHIRLEY ORT

Education: Attended Lyons School from the second grade (1953) through the eighth grade (1960).

Vivid memories: (1) when Mrs. Radcliffe taped the answers to my math book shut for cheating (last time I ever did that!); (2) loving My Weekly Reader (we had no newspapers at home); and (3) sleep-overs at Rosalee’s, where I was free to apply brightly colored nail lacquer and dance (unlike at home).

Moved to Camden, Michigan in March, 1960 and graduated from Camden-Frontier Schools in 1964.

Graduated with B. A. from Spring Arbor University, 1968. Moved to Seattle, Washington right after that where I lived for 29 years. Earned an MA in Medieval History at Western Michigan (1973, while on leave from my job) and earned my law degree from Seattle University (1986). Still licensed to practice, but do not practice.

Employment: Currently employed at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (for last 12 years). Previously, worked at Seattle Pacific University (1968-1979) then at the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board (1979-1997). Career focus: administering financial aid programs and helping parents figure out how to pay for college. Greatest accomplishment: The Carolina Covenant®; check it out at http://www.unc.edu/carolinacovenant. Plan to retire in three to four years.

Personal: Never married; forgot to have children! Happy as I am but always open to new possibilities. Love my little “Stillman,” a lhasa apsos. Devour newspapers (the Financial Times, the Economist, and New York Times weekend edition).

Interests: Travel, especially to Greece and to Paris. Enjoy cooking, and collect vintage clothing. Basketball; you can’t work at Chapel Hill and not be into basketball!

What means the most to me: My faith; member of Duke Chapel. My treasured friends throughout the country. My family. I had a wonderful relationship with my parents, who are now deceased. Dad lived to be 98 and we were very close; lost him 3 years ago. My siblings and I are keeping the family home in Camden, Michigan.

Challenges: Orthopedic issues. In the last five years, have had three major orthopedic surgeries – arthritis. Where did it come from? There was none in my family. I have adjusted, and after this most recent surgery look forward to being more active.
