James McQuillen
1st Lieut. James A. McQuillen, Company I, 38th Ohio. His non-descript appearance was typical of many Federal line officers during the summer of 1864, especially with the absence of rank insignia on his uniform. McQuillen was wounded in the trenches before Atlanta on July 28, and died in a Chattanooga hospital on October 2. After the war, McQuillen Post 171, G.A.R., in Delta,, Ohio was named in his honor.

The information and picture are from the book ECHOES OF BATTLE The Atlanta Campaign (page 341) edited by Larry M. Strayer and Richard A. Baumgartner.

Dick Marlatt

Dear Uncle Dick and Aunt Peewee
I recently was looking through a book out at Chickamauga National Military Park and found a picture of one James A. McQuillen, Company I, 38th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. If you remember, a McQuillen girl married a Sindel man after the Civil War which I believe were your mother's parents. My first reaction was to call Grandma and Grandpa James Marlatt and tell them that I had found the picture purely by chance. In all the years I have worked on the Towne and Marlatt family trees I have never been so fortunate as to run across anything like this.

As I have been compiling information on the 38th Ohio, I found that (David) Leonard Sindel was also in Company I with McQuillen. McQuillen was the Ist Lieutenant of the Company and Sindel was the Ist Sergeant of the Company during the Atlanta Campaign. I have no doubt in my mind that McQuillen and Sindel knew each other pretty well as officers and N.C.O.'s worked closely together. As I told Grandma and Grandpa Marlatt, Leonard Sindel was mortally wounded at Resaca, Georgia, (May 15, 1864) and taken to a Division Hospital near Dalton, Georgia, where he died of his wounds. He is buried in the National Cemetery (Section L, grave t 9089) at Chattanooga, Tennessee.

James McQuillen made it to Atlanta before he was wounded in the right thigh July 28,-ISZ4, (-although his Compiled Service Record says he was wounded July 22, 1864). He was sent to a Hospital in Chattanooga were he died due to complications. Gangrene set in the wound and McQuillen's leg had to be amputated on September 20, 1864. Shortly after that "the gangrene continued, and the patient sank, and died October 2, 1864. McQuillen's body was apparently shipped home where he was buried in the Salsbury Cemetery (N.W. of Delta, Ohio). He was apparently well like by Company I as the men erected the stone over his grave.

This picture is circa 1915. Clyde Marlatt was a drayman in Lyons, Ohio.   Believe the gentleman on the wagon was a Mr. Green.

Freight was dropped off on a loading dock at the south side of the post office and Clyde would load his horse and dray there.    Clyde delivered everything from heavy barrels of feed to an upright piano.

The horse was trained to verbal commands of "Gee" and "Haw" so well that the reigns could be left untouched as the horse worked.   This was how Clyde was able to deliver an upright piano to a residence by himself.    Clyde didn't want to take the chance of the piano toppling off the dray so kept it in place while the horse responded to what Clyde told it to do.    He then had the horse back the dray up to the person's front porch by using the verbal commands.    Once the horse had the dray in place, Clyde was able to push the piano across the porch and into the house.

The Mail Wagon of Elmer SINDEL
Elmer Herman SINDEL is my paternal great grandfather, husband of Hattie Linette (MCQUILLIN) SINDEL, father of Lulu Luella (SINDEL) MARLATT. The picture from Mom's file is of poor quality, however believe it is the only one existing.
The text below is from The Delta Atlas.

"Rough Rider Sindel Over at Lyons, On Rt. 16 delivered 3765 pieces of mail in March, and collected 530 pieces. He has a good route and the people on the line wouldn't trade him for anybody."       Delta Atlas April 28, 1904
