This is the original Lyons Christian Church on E. Morenci Street in Lyons.    The church was built by E. C. Daniels in 1876 and burned to the ground in 1924.    The brick church was built on the same site and still stands today.

E. C. (Enos Chapin) Daniels is my maternal ggg grandfather. He was the father of Ellen T. [Daniels] Wood, grandfather of Lue L. Wood, gr grandfather of Carl L., Wood and gr gr grandfather of Lela Mae [Wood] Marlatt.

Lyons has a new skate park

Tennis doesn't appear to be a popular activity in Lyons these days, at least not as popular as skateboarding. With that in mind, Lyons Park Board members decided to convert half of the seldom-used tennis courts to a skate park.

After local skateboarders were criticized for building home-made ramps in village parking areas, they asked if a skate park could be built. The skaters were patient, said board member Bonnie Gorsuch, and they finally got their own skating area this summer.

Park board members are grateful for the donations of time, materials and money to construct the park.

"We have many people to thank for their generous contributions, the hours of work in building the ramps, and for the use of their equipment in placing the ramps in the park," Gorsuch said.

Her list of people and businesses includes G&B Asphalt, Ramps.com, Rod Kurfiss, Bob Iffland, Rob Murd, Don Gorsuch, Lyons Christian Church VBS, Shawn Machacek, Village Mart, Sunny's Campground, Todd Keefer, Steve and Linda Boger, State Line Farms, Steve Gillespie, Keri Schmitz, Nichole Jenkins, Diane Brandt and Jessica Double.

"Those who donated anonymously or are not listed here, we thank you and the skateboarders of Lyons," she added.

Other park board members are Mary Vroman, Joan Tejkl, Shirley Venables and Jeff Avina.

The Vietnam Wall

Footnote and the National Archives held a press conference this morning in Washington, D.C. to unveil a new interactive online Vietnam War Memorial. This Footnote project features the largest photo of The Wall on the Internet (at full size, the photo on Footnote is about 460 feet wide). The project has been several months in the making and provides an interactive experience for finding names on The Wall as well as service record and casualty report information for each soldier listed. Viewers may also upload photos and create tributes connected to any name on The Wall.

Please take a moment to view a short video about how one veteran found a fallen friend on The Wall and add your own tribute today. The video is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scwMAgCLdks
or on the Footnote site at http://www.footnote.com/thewall

I went to the Footnote web site and registered. I then looked to see if Jack Hinkle was listed on The Vietnam Memorial Wall. I was able to download an image of his name, which you will see below:

45th REUNION - Class of 1964

The Class of 2009 had a great 45th Reunion at Borlands home on May 30, 2009. The weather started out foreboding but the sun came out & the birds sang! Many old memories were shared as well as catching up on everyone’s current life. Bob Duckett & Jeannie Nolan headed the organizing of the Reunion. Below is an email from Bob dated today, June 14, 2009:
&&&&&

I wanted to take a few minutes and thank all those involved that made our 45th class reunion such a success!

Charlie you did an outstanding job on the reunion packets. The pictures, biographies and memories will be cherished for a long time. Great job!

To all the Borlands - the picnic facilities were, of course, first class! Thank you for all the hard work you did to prepare the area for the picnic and clean up afterwards. I know it was a lot of hard work and we all appreciate your effort.

Jeannie - all your skills came to play during this entire event. The planning ahead of time, the organization of all the classmates and of course your hard work the day of the picnic. It wouldn't have come together without all your efforts. Thanks!

It was such a beautiful day - the weather threatened to ruin our parade but it did not! It was such fun to get together with everyone, catch up on our lives and enjoy each other's company.

Thanks to all involved for such a successful event. I look forward to the 50th reunion.

Bob

I have finished posting The Memory Book on this Lyons web site today. The Memory Bool given to everyone in the 1964 Class. Copies were sent to those who were unable to attend the Reunion. The Book consists of Yearly Class Group photos, contributed photos, and current biographies. With the Index of Contents, The Memory Book is 61 pages long.

Adrianne SERNA, a daughter of two Lyons graduates, 'Jr.' SERNA & Jeannie NOLAN, has produced a CD of her songs called "Another Day In America". She has a web site, http://www.asbmusic.com/home.html which has downloadable excerpts from four of her songs. She has a wonderful voice and the CD is well worth the modest cost. Please listen to her songs and support the cause.
