Clair M. "Red" Halstead, 80, of RD 8 East Stroudsburg, died Jan. 25 1999 in the Laurel Manor Nursing Home, Stroudsburg.
He was the husband of Shirley M. (Pipher) Taylor Halstead. They had observed their 24th wedding anniversary in February of 1998.
Born in Pocono Pines, he was a son of the late George and Celia (Keiper) Halstead.
Well known throughout the Poconos for his masonry skill, especially fireplaces which was a specialty, Clair had worked on building projects such as Pocono Hospital, East Stroudsburg University, Shawnee Inn, the Delaware Water Gap Toll bridge, Unity House, the Stroudsburg YMCA, and numerous others. He had also done the masonry work at the home of W. Peter Ahnert in Bushkill. He later worked as a caretaker for Mr. Ahnert for 15 years. He had owned and operated H & J Masonry in Marshalls Creek for 30 years.
He was a member of the Saylorsburg Playground Association and was a former member of the Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder Company in Saylorsburg.
He is survived by a son, George of Saylorsburg; a daughter, Joyce Hill of Saylorsburg; two stepsons, Fred Taylor of Bushkill, and Ronald Taylor of Cresco; a stepdaughter, Diane Jensen of Bushkill; a sister, Doris Serfass of Pocono Summit; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Frable and Shirley Toth.
