Errick
SAMPSON and Mary Ann SAMPSON
(nee FRANCES) left London on the ship 'Golden City' on 23 October
1865. With them were their children, Alfred (9), Henry (7),
Frederick (5) and Emily (infant). Arriving in Queensland, Australia,
they resided at Oxley and Humpybong and when Emily was six years of
age her parents selected land at Upper Caboolture, Queensland.
It would not have been long after
moving to Upper Caboolture that they lost their eldest son, Alfred.
Alfred had been milking their cow on the evening of the 19 October
1871 when the cow suddenly kicked him in the stomach. He was taken
to his bed where Errick and Mary tended him throughout the night by
applying hot fementations to his stomach and cold applications to
his head. He complained of pain in his groin all night but rose in
the morning stating he felt better. By 10:00 am that morning he
again worsened, complaining he could not pass water. Errick then
travelled to Brisbane to consult with a doctor for medical advice.
Dr Ward of Fortitude Valley gave a prescription for the boy but told
Errick he held little hope of a recovery for the lad. Alfred died at
4:00 am on Saturday morning, 21 October 1871, two hours before his
father arrived home.
