My husband's Baldry/Boldery/Bauldry
ancestors originated from Suffolk, England and settled in the
Maryborough district of Queensland, Australia. James BAULDRY (28), Ursula (25) and Thomas (infant)
arrived on the ship "Agricola" in Queensland on 26
February 1853. His occupation was given as farm labourer.
As was often the case in years
gone by, the spelling of surnames managed to change quite
frequently, especially when our ancestors could neither read
nor write. This was the case with James and Ursula. The first
appearance of the BOLDERY surname appears on the birth
certificate of John BOLDERY (BALDRY/BAULDRY) on 14 January 1868.
His father, James, was the informant of this birth and signed
the document with his mark. This could also explain why
Ursula's name changed constantly on official documentation (Priscilla
on death certificate and Letitia's marriage certificate),
Ursula on shipping indent and Usler on the birth certificates
of some of her children. Perhaps she was simply known later
in life as a nickname similar to Cilla.
