8. Jeremiah
^ CHERRY43,44 was born on 1 Apr 1766 at Virginia. He appeared
in the census in 1790 at Halifax District, Martin County, North Carolina.
1-1-1-0-1 (1 male 16 or older, head of household, 1 male under 16, white female,
head of family, other white females, all other free persons)
He appeared in the census in 1800 at Martin County, North Carolina.
p. 388 40010-1112003 He died on 29 Jan 1821 at Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee.
He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee.45 Opened early tavern in Columbia
in 1808; Constable during War of 1812.
It is probable that the father of John C Cherry was Jeremiah Cherry, who was
listed in the 1820 Census of Maury Co, Tn as 20012/01001. This would indicate
he was over 45 and his wife over 45. If this census was accurate, then John C
would be one of the children at 10-16, and would place a sister at about the
same age.
The same 1820 Census lists a Cherry on p. 49 and a Jerey Cherry on p. 49 both
being in Maury County. There was also a Jeremiah Cherry in Columbia, Maury Co.,
in 1810 as operator of an inn. This would indicate that he was at least 21 in
1810, which would place his birthdate between 1780 and 1790. There was the administration
of an estate in Maury Co, in 1821 for a Jeremiah Cherry. There was no will.
A check with the Probate Clerk at Columbia, Tn developed no will having been
filed, but the papers do indicate some of the purchasers of the estate assets,
John C Cherry, however, was not one of them.
Jeremiah Cherry is named as one of the executors of the will of William Price
in 16 Jan 1800, putting Jeremiah Cherry in Martin County, NC before and after
1800, implying that most if not all of the children were born in Martin County,
North Carolina.
Jeremiah Cherry was named in his father's will, dated 23 Feb 1811, proven Dec
1814 in Martin Co, NC, but he had already gone to Maury County, TN. Although
Jeremiah was barely mentioned in the will.: "...all the residue of my estate
be sold and the money so raised be equally divided between my six children to
wit: Mary, Ruth, Joshua, Jeremiah, Job and Abner Cherry, ..." This was the
only passage in the will where Jeremiah was mentioned. Most of Job's other children
got land and various properties. A Roderick Cherry, of Martin County, whose
daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Howell 3 Jan 1833 (Pitt Marriage Notice, NC
Star, New Bern, NC, Jan. 18, 1833. Groom of Martin Co., NC; bride dau. of
Roderick Cherry, Esq.) might be another brother of Jeremiah etc who died previous
to the will of Job Cherry.
Possible additional sons of Jeremiah, based on Land Records of Columbus and Pontotoc
MS in the early 1840s and late 1830s include Joel B., James M, (also listed in
Land Records for Tuscaloosa Land Office, Alabama in 1835,). Willis W is also
listed in the marriage records of Monroe Co, AL. and is known to have settled
in Saltillo, the same as John C. Cherry). the John W. Cherry who purchased land
in Columbus land Office in early 1840s could be a cousin of John C. and possibly
son of Jeremiah's brother Joshua who also went to Alabama and died there in 1840.
A Joseph B. Cherry, also purchased land at Pontotoc in 1838, and a Thomas Cherry
(on land records at Tuscaloosa, AL in Aug. 1825) purchased land at the Columbus
land office on Feb. 27, 1841 (the same date as John C. Cherry). Willis W. Cherry
is listed along with others as Patentee on over 75 separate tracts of land between
1838 and 1840. Jeremiah ^ CHERRY and Mary "Polly" PRICE^ were married on 9 Dec
1782. 9. Mary
"Polly" PRICE^ was born on 12 Jan 1768. She died on 15 May
1832 at Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee. She was buried in Greenwood
Cemetery, Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee. Children were:

Dempsey Cherry is an almost unique name in all the Cherry branches, according
to John H. Cherry. But probably all were born in Norfolk County, Virginia.
Dempsey Cherry is listed in 1752 on the Norfolk County Tax List, and again in
1753, 1754, 1757, 1759, 1766, 1767, 1770 and 1771, possibly in Portsmouth Parish.
The Dempsey Cherry listed in the 1752 Tax List must have been an adult and so,
was probably born about 1730.
Another Dempsey Cherry is listed on the Norfolk County Tax List at Deep Creek
Township in 1814, 1819, and 1820.
Dempsey Cherry is also listed in the 1820 Norfolk County, VA Census.
In 1825 a Dempsey Cherry Jr, listed in the same place. By 1826, one was listed
in Portsmouth or Portsmouth Parish, Virginia. This Dempsey Cherry seems to disappear
from Norfolk County Tax lists after 1825, and may be the one who died in Maury
County, Tennessee. Of course the fact that he was referred to as Junior could
only mean that there was an older Dempsey Cherry, his father or another in the
same neighborhood in 1825.
On 21 April 1810, a Dempsey Cherry married Frances richardson in Norfolk County,
Virginia, and on 9 July 1814, a Dempsey Cherry, possibly the same one, married
Rosanna Green in Norfolk County, Viriginia.
