Newell C. Cherry 17 Farmer Tenn He served in the Military Co. C. 17th Regiment in 1865 in Mississippi Newell C. Cherry was a veteran of the Confederate Army during the Civil War, serving in various capacities. He was in Company C, 17th Regiment, which surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, 4 May 1865, and was paroled at Meridian, Mississippi, 16 May 1865. In her widow's pension application, Pauline M. Owen indicated that Newell Cherry served in the war under a Captain Holder, lst Lieut G. W. Cherry, Joel Sweallen, and Boyd Williams. It is probably that G.W. Cherry was a relative, but he must have been either an uncle or cousin, as Newell had no brothers.
He appears on the Tax List for near Guntown, Lee County, Mississippi in the year in 1877 He died on 16 Jan 1903 at Seffner, Hillsborough County, Florida. Death Certificate from Hillsborough County, Florida, shows date of death at Seffner, Florida, and place of birth as Tennessee, and his age at time of death as 70. names of parents or cause of death are not shown. The census of 1880, Lee County, Mississippi shows his mother as Evelina Coopwood, born in Tennessee, with her parents being born in Virginia. The same census shows his father as being born in Virginia.

The 1900 Census of Dallas County, Texas, shows a John C. Cherry, b. Sept. 1867 in Mississippi, and in the same household:

Polly A. A., b. Sept 1867 in MS.
Nellie, b. Dec. 1889 in TX

The death certificate of Newell Cherry's daughter, Lee Ora Cherry Brown, filed 30 Jan 1948 in Texas, shows that both Newell and his wife, Pauline, were born in Alabama. Family tradition is that this was in Lowndes County, near Montgomery. There was an early town in Tennessee called "Cherryville" in Haywood County, northeast of Memphis, however, no connection with this town has yet been established.

Story of Monroe County, 1988. states that Newell C Cherry and Evalina Prewett were married in Maury County, Tennessee. This seems to be the most reliable source for Newell Cherry. Newell Charles ^ CHERRY and Pauline Martha D. ^ OWEN were married on 25 Feb 1862 in Mooresville, Itawamba County, Mississippi.7 They appeared in the census in 1870 at Baldwyn, East of M & O Railroad, Lee County, Mississippi.8 Dwelling 167

3. Photo Pauline Martha D. ^ OWEN9,10 was born on 11 Nov 1843 at Pleasant Hill, Itawamba County, Mississippi. She died in 1918 at Clute, Brazoria County, Texas. Her place of death is not definitely established. In 1900/02 she was living in Florida with her husband Newell Charles Cherry, and with a daughter, Lee Ora, who married a Brown. The children later moved to an area near Clute, Brazoria Co., TX. where at least one of their children, Julia Brown Robinson, lived.

By 1906 she was back near Saltillo, Lee County, living with her grandson, H.S. Gober, at which time she filed her application for a widows pension. At least one of her childen moved to Clute. As correspondence in the possession of Lucille Martha Webb Johnson indicates, the family was entirely dissatisfied in Florida, and it is probable they all moved to Texas, but the date and place of death of Pauline and Newell Charles Cherry has never been established.

The death certificate of Lee Ora Cherry Brown 30 Jan 1948, at Velasco, Brazoria Co., Texas, shows Pauline and Newel being born in Alabama. This certificate was furnished by Julia Brown Robinson, Box 132, Clute, Brazoria Co., TX.

In 1906 Pauline Cherry applied for a pension to the State of Mississippi, deriving from the service of her husband, Newell C. Cherry, in the Army of the Confederate States of America. She was granted a Class 6 pension in 1910.

Date and place of death of Pauline may have been Dallas County, Texas 14-11-36, Death Certificate no. 53912.

She was buried on 30 Jan 1948 in Medical Branch, University of Texas, Galveston, Texas. Family record of Minnie Cherry Webb, and marriage records of Lee Co. MS. The marriage records of Lee Co. MS show marriage to E. B. Brown in 1908. Letters from Le Ora (who also occasionally spelled her name Lee Ora) from Sefner, Florida in 1902 refer to a Charlie as well as her mother and father, Newell C. and Pauline Owen Cherry. Charlie might refer to a husband, but more probably a younger brother, Charles Owen Cherry, who in 1902 would have been about 24 years old. From the letters it appears the family was not happy in Florida, which may account for the return to Mississippi by about 1904/5. Charles Owen married in Lee Co., MS. in 1905 and Le Ora in 1908.
