One of the Last Surviving Members of Local G.A.R. Post Dies: Funeral Thursday
John Keffer, 93, one of the last surviving Civil War Veterans died early this morning at the Bert Perkins home in the country. He had been making his home with them for the last seven years. Mr. Keffer was taken ill four days ago and was the last survivor of a family of thirteen children. A military funeral will be conducted 2:30 o'clock Thursday at Rose Hill cemetery. Julius F. Muller American Legion post will conduct the service. The body will remain at the Hennessey and VanCleave funeral parlors until time of the services. Two G.A.R. members are now left of the local post. They are Capt. J. D. Brown and A. R. Seigfred. Mr. Keefer was the only one of the organization able to attend the Decoration day services this last year. He was a Civil War vet, Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 10 July 1861 at the age of 20 Enlisted in Company F, 4th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 15 August 1861. Reenlisted in Company F, 4th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 25 January 1864. Promoted to Full Corporal on 04 July 1864. Mustered out Company F, 4th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 24 July 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky.
