Genealogy
- Keepers Family of Sussex County New Jersey
William H. Keepers is the founder of this
branch of the Keepers family. He was born March 19,1793 and was twice married.
The name of his first wife and the date of her death are unknown. Three
children, William, Susan and Charles, were born to this marriage; the names of
others, if any, are unknown. It is believed that William of the first marriage
died in infancy since another son was also named William in the second
marriage. On July 9,1831, at the age of thirty-eight, he married Elizabeth
Demorest.
In the year 1846 he moved his family from Sussex County, New Jersey, to Wills County, Illinois then in 1849 to Kankakee County, Illinois. All but the youngest of the nine children in the second marriage were born in New Jersey. He died December 23,1873 and Elizabeth Demorest, who was born February 19,1809, died January 12,1888. Both are buried in Essex, Illinois.
Mary (Keepers) Helgevold, a great-great-granddaughter of William, has done extensive research on this group, has included numerous obituaries, and has pointed out areas for further work. Specifically, it appears that New Jersey records need to be more fully explored in order to determine the validity of many of the early suppositions in the lineage for this group. The parents of William H. Keepers have yet to be determined also.
