Genealogy - Keepers Family of Guernsey County Ohio
The
founder of this group was Joseph Hayes Keepers, born in Chester County,
Pennsylvania. He married Hannah P. Jordan and moved to Beaver County,
Pennsylvania about 1812. They moved again about 1835 to Guernsey County, Ohio.
He died there December 6,1842; his wife died in Illinois April 28,1873.
Joseph's father died in 1827, and, since Joseph was the eldest son, he probably inherited a large share of his father's estate. Joseph is listed on the tax rolls in Beaver County, PA, from 1832 to 1836, and he appears to be quite prosperous. His brother John M. Keepers, Group 2, is listed on the tax rolls from 1827 to 1838. His family must have been in Beaver County earlier, since we know that one of John's sons was born in 1819 in Beaver County. John and his family also moved on to Ohio.
Joseph's son,
Israel Jordan Keepers, moved to Grundy County, Illinois in 1866.
The state of Ohio depopulated the entire
Jefferson Township, 36 square miles, and converted the area to a lake and
reforested land, now called Salt Fork Lake. The Joseph Hayes Keepers farm lies
within the area, sections 2 and 9.
