Genealogy - Keepers Family of Missouri-Texas

Group 13.

Descendants of James Keepers and Mary Elder

Since the Texas group was originally researched, it has been established that this family spent a few decades in Missouri, principally, Jefferson County.  Data regarding James and Mary Keepers and their family in Missouri are now included in this group.  The descendants of Lewis Keepers and Mary Paralee Chandler comprise the bulk of this branch of the family.  The elements of era and geographical area supply strong evidence that Lewis Keepers was a son of James Keepers and Mary Elder of Frederick County, Maryland.

The 1840 Jefferson County, Missouri, census lists a James Keepers in the 60-70 age group and his wife in the 50-60 group. His wife was not named in this census. This coincides with what we know of James; born in Maryland circa 1784 and married in 1806.  James died intestate in Jefferson County, Missouri, in 1847.  Lewis and his family are in Jefferson County, MO, in both 1840 and 1850 censuses.  By 1860, Lewis and family are farming in Bastrop County, Texas.

The 1850 census lists Lewis as born in Maryland.  It also lists Mary Keepers as head of household and in the 60-70 age group.

The 1830 census lists James and Mary and their large family in St. Louis, Missouri.  In 1817 James Keepers was executor of his sister's estate in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  Interestingly, their daughter Rebecca, born in 1826, lists her birth state as Alabama in the 1850 census, Jefferson County, Missouri.  If that record is correct, James and Mary must have taken a circuitous route from Maryland to Missouri.
