Descendants of Isaac Keepers

Group 8:  Frederick County, Maryland

See group 1 for details about siblings and antecedents for Isaac Keepers.

Generation No. 1

     1.  Isaac1 Keepers was born Unknown, and died Bef. 17981.  He married Catherine McCardell2 Unknown, daughter of Patrick McCardell and Mary.  She died March 27, 1815 in Emmitsburg, MD3.

On July 1, 1800, lots 112 and 113 in Emmitsburg, MD,  were conveyed to one Conrad Hersh for 159 pounds, and the deed was signed by the following who were obviously the heirs of Isaac Keepers (the senior) although this was not so stated:  Catherine Keepers, Isaac Keepers (the junior - son of this Isaac), Michael Keepers, James Keepers, Mary Keepers, Eleanor and Andrew Knouff.  Catherine Keepers, the widow, signed by mark.  [MERLE]

(Note:  Emmitsburg was founded in 1786 by William Emmit, to whom ground rents were due, with a later addition by William Shields.)

From McCardell and Related Families, p. 298, (book at Frederick Co. Historical Society, Frederick, MD), "the will of Patrick McCardel was probated in Hagerstown August 19, 1786."  In addition to bequests to family members, it is stated that "son-in-law Isaac Keepers was willed a negro girl Sall."  The daughters were not named, but the name Catherine is obtained from the note above.

From the 1790 Census, Frederick Co., MD:  Isaac Keepers, 3 free wh. m. > 16, 3 free wh. m. < 16, 2 free wh. females, and no slaves.

From History of Western Maryland, vol. II, p. 1189:   The first military company organized for the Revolutionary war in Hagerstown was mustered in January, 1776, the members whose names were appended subscribed to the following obligation:

"We whose names are subscribed do hereby enroll ourselves into a company of military, agreeable to  the resolution of a Provincial Convention held at Annapolis on the 26th of July, 1775, and we do promise and engage that we will respectively march to such places within this province and at such times as we shall be commanded by the convention or the Council of Safety of this province, or by our officers in pursuance of the orders of said convention or Council, and there with our whole power fight against whomsoever we shall be commanded by the authority aforesaid.  Witness our hands the 6th day of January, 1776."

The list of names includes Isaac Keepers.

From Revolutionary Patriots of Frederick County, Maryland 1775 - 1783, p. 204:

"Keepers, Isaac.  Petitioned the General Assembly under the Act of May 12, 1780, stating that he had been a non-juror to the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity in 1778 due to ignorance and now desired relief under the Act and to take the Oath [Ref: L-101]."

From Western Maryland Genealogy, vol. 1, p. 39; in 1783, Isaac was a juror in the death of a Negro man.  See Annapolis Hall of Records, Folder #40298 - 7 to see signature.  This is probably this Isaac, although his son, Isaac, would have been about 18 years old in 1783.  The age of majority was 21 at that time, so it is doubtful that the juror would have been the son.

From "Inhabitants of Frederick County, Maryland, vol. 1, 1750-1790," by Stephanie R. Shaffer, published 1999 by Willow Bend Books, Westminster, MD, pp. 80-81, the records show:  "Deceased: Unnamed Negro man who was described as a recently captured runaway.  Date of death: Not stated, inquisition May 10, 1783.  Coroner:  William Beatty.  Cause of death: Drowned.  Jury: Abraham Haff, Isaac Keepers, James McCardel, Gibert Rudoff, John fower, William Pope, Robert Hammitt, Samuel Linton, Sr., [crossed out Robert Adderton], William McCay,

Comments:  Negro man had been 'taken up' on March 20, 1783.  On the day of his death, he was tied up, and was boarded on the 'Manocacy Ferry.'  The water was about 3 feet 9 inches deep and was described as muddy.  The man, who was described as 'not having the fear of God before his eyes,' threw himself overboard.  His hands were tied and he sunk in the water and drowned."

Notes for Catherine McCardell:

Her father, Patrick McCardell, born in Scotland, was a tobacconist at Hagerstown, MD, "from 1774," according to her father's will, dated 1786.  [Washington Historical Society, "McCardles of Washington County", page 300.]

Children of Isaac Keepers and Catherine McCardell are:

+   2         i.   Isaac2 Keepers, born Abt. 1765 in Frederick, MD; died 1804.

3        ii.   Joseph Keepers, born Abt. 1776.

4       iii.   Eleanor Keepers, born Abt. 1778; died February 1816 in near Frederick, MD8.  She married Andrew Knouff November 20, 1798.

Notes for Eleanor Keepers:

Eleanor (Keepers) Knouff's last will and testament, February 7, 1816, lists no children, but she does name brothers James, John, and Michael, and sisters Mary Brawner and Monica Bird.  John Keepers and Monica Keepers were missed in the 1979 edition of the Keepers Family genealogy.  The fact that Isaac and Joseph were not named in her will indicates that they were probably both deceased by 1816 - we know that Isaac died in 1804.

+   5        iv.   Mary Anne Keepers, born Bet. 1765 - 1784.

+   6         v.   Michael Keepers, born Bet. 1765 - 1784; died March 23, 1832 in Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA.

+   7        vi.   James Keepers, born Abt. 1784; died August 1847.

8       vii.   Monica Keepers9.  She married --- Bird.

Notes for Monica Keepers:

Children of Monica Bird are referred to generally, but not named, in her sister Eleanor's will (1816).

+   9      viii.   John C. Keepers, born Abt. 1785; died Abt. January 1824.

Generation No. 2

     2.  Isaac2 Keepers (Isaac1) was born Abt. 1765 in Frederick, MD10,11, and died 1804.  He married Helen Livers Abt. 1790 in Frederick, MD12.  She was born Abt. 176913, and died October 14, 1823.

Notes for Isaac Keepers:

Arnold Livers' (Helen Livers' father) will was executed in 1777 making Mary, his wife, sole devisee.  He died in 1779 and the will is recorded in the probate clerk's office at Frederick, MD (G. M. #1, page 132).

In book W. R. 23, page 449, in Frederick County, MD, a deed was recorded on October 19, 1802, wherein the heirs of Arnold Livers, deceased, perfected the title to 27 1/2 acres of land called 'Arnold's Delight' in favor of Mary Livers, his widow.  The following are grantors:  Arnold Livers, Joseph Livers, William Livers, Thomas Livers, Isaac Keepers and Helen, his wife, Nathaniel Elder and Hannah, his wife, William Browner and Mary, his wife.  It is not clear why the joint conveyance 23 years later was required to perfect the title.

On September 17, 1803, still another deed was executed for the same property (W. R. 25, page 40) by Isaac Keepers and Helen, his wife, who in this instance is specifically described as the daughter of Arnold Livers, deceased.  This deed was in favor of Thomas Livers.  The deed also describes Isaac and Helen Keepers as residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Excerpts from Sister Stella's letter:

'Great-grandfather Keepers was killed while hunting in Pennsylvania, near where the city of Latrobe now stands.  After his death, his wife took the children, four boys, home to her mother in Maryland, never again returning to their home, which they owned and on which the City of Latrobe now stands, evidently taken over for taxes thus lost to them.  The fifth son, my Grandfather, John B. Keepers, was born after his father's death.'

 [Sr. Stella, MERLE]

Although Sr. Stella states that the hunting accident occurred "near Latrobe," which is in Westmoreland Co., an Inventory of the "Goods and Chattels" of Isaac Keepers, late of "Alegany Township Deceased," was filed in Somerset County on December 31, 1804.  There are four pages detailing the value of Isaac's estate including: "1 Large Sugar Kitle & Bale" valued at 2 pounds, 1 shilling and 3 pence, " 3 Books of Devocion" valued at 7 shillings and 6 pence, and "1 Pocket cumpas" valued at 2 shillings and 6 pence. The value of the inventory totals 14 pounds 7 shillings and 7 1/2 pence and is certified by James Elder and Captain Richard Mcguire and signed by Hellen Keepers on January 2, 1805.  All were referred to as "of Cambria County."  Further, Helena Keepers, Edward V. James, and John Keepers, all of the County of Cambria, were obligated to Somerset Co.  for $2,000, "lawful money of the United States" if they did not provide the inventory before January 31, 1805.

More About Isaac Keepers:

Burial: Unknown

Residence: ...principally, Somerset County, PA. [Sr. Stella]

Notes for Helen Livers:

In the 1820 census, Frederick County, MD, p. 144, there are two children in Helen's household:  one male in the 10-16 age group (John B.), and one female in the 16-26 age group.  This supports the approximate birth year for Catherine as 1800.

More About Helen Livers:

Burial: Elder Cemetery, south of Emmitsburg, MD13

Residence: 1820, Emmitsburg, Frederick Co., MD14

Children of Isaac Keepers and Helen Livers are:

+   10       i.   Isaac M.3 Keepers, born May 17, 1792; died Unknown.

+   11      ii.   James Keepers, born Abt. 1794 in Frederick, MD; died Bef. 1840.

12     iii.   Joseph Keepers, born Abt. 1795 in Frederick, MD16.

This Joseph is the founder of the Kentucky branch, Group 14.  See group 14 for details.

     5.  Mary Anne2 Keepers (Isaac1) was born Bet. 1765 - 178422.  She married Jeremiah Brawner February 11, 1804.  He was born Bet. 1765 - 178423.

Notes for Jeremiah Brawner:

The spelling of Brawner (instead of Browner) is based on the spelling in Eleanor (Keepers) Knouff's will (1816).

More About Jeremiah Brawner and Mary Keepers:

Marriage: February 11, 1804

Child of Mary Keepers and Jeremiah Brawner is:

     16       i.   Three sons3 Brawner, born Bet. 1804 - 181024.

     6.  Michael2 Keepers (Isaac1) was born Bet. 1765 - 178424, and died March 23, 1832 in Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA25.  He married (1) Polly Knouff February 05, 181326.    He married (2) Susannah Stevens December 14, 182226.

Notes for Michael Keepers:

The 1810 census record, Frederick Co., MD, has the J. Brawner family next to the M. Keepers family.  Presumably, they are brother-in-laws.  The record also shows two females in the 16-26 age group.  Perhaps Susannah is Michael's second wife.  More work needs to be done here.

More About Michael Keepers:

Military service: Veteran of the War of 1812, in 2nd Regiment, Maryland Militia.

Residence: 1810, Frederick County, MD27

Child of Michael Keepers and Susannah Stevens is:

     7.  James2 Keepers (Isaac1) was born Abt. 1784, and died August 1847.  He married Mary Elder April 28, 1806.  She was born 1790.

Notes for James Keepers:

In Western Maryland Genealogy, p. 182, Frederick County indentures:

"Barney Riley of Adams Co., Pa., binds his son John Riley , for 3y 6m to James Keepers of Frederick Co. [MD],

     joiner, to 20 May 1813."

signed on "23 April 1810 by Barnabas Rielly and James Keepers (169-70)."

James was the executor named in his sister's (Eleanor Keepers Knouff) will (1816).  In fulfilling his duties as executor, he sold his sister's farm:  60 acres, 3 miles from Emmitsburg, MD, and 1 mile from the seminary with good log dwelling.  A notice to sell was published in The Frederick-Town Herald, March, 1817.

19      ii.   Lewis Keepers, born 1817.

     20     iii.   Catherine Mary Keepers.

     21      iv.   Delphine Keepers.

     22       v.   Elizabeth Lucretia Keepers.

     23      vi.   Ellen Ann Keepers.

     24     vii.   Rebecca Keepers.

     25    viii.   Robert Keepers.

     9.  John C.2 Keepers (Isaac1) was born Abt. 1785, and died Abt. January 1824.  He married Hannah.

Notes for John C. Keepers:

John Keepers is listed as a brother in his sister's will - see notes for Eleanor.

That this John is John, the husband of Hannah in Cambria County, PA, is inferred from the 1804 inventory of goods for Isaac (Helen) Keepers.  John Keepers "of Cambria County", along with Helen, Isaac's widow, and an Edward V. James, are the three signers of the Administrative Bond for Isaac's estate, filed Dec. 31, 1804.  This connection supplies strong evidence that this John is Helen's brother-in-law.  The Administrative Bond for Isaac's estate, filed January 13, 1824, supplies the middle initial "C."

Two sources list all seven of John & Hannah's children - Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania, Vol. 1, 1793-1839, by Rev. Ledoux, 1993, located at Fulton County Historical Society, McConnellsburg, PA, and Souvenir of Loretto Centenary, Oct. 10, 1899, (Matrimonial and Baptismal Records of Gallitzin), located at Cambria Historical Society, Edensburg, PA.

Deed:  In 1817, John & Hannah Keepers sold "parcels of land situate in the Town of Munster" [Cambria Co., PA] , known on the general plan of Munster by lot numbers 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 95, and 96, for the sum of $68.00.  The lots were sold to Silas Moore, and John & Hannah signed the deed.  Witnesses: John Miller and Johnston Moore.

Deed:  On April 13, 1816, James Maginess, the Executor of the estate of Edward Victor James, sold to John Keepers, for the sum of $15.25, Lot 91 in the general plan for the Town of Munster.  The lot is described as 66 ft. in front and 181.5 ft. deep on Huntingdon Street "& long lane", adjoining No. 92.  James Maginess was from the Borough of Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA, and John was the highest bidder at public auction.

Witnesses:  Jacob Schuler and Jno. Brandon

Deed:  On March 14, 1816, under identical circumstances as the previous deed, John Keepers bought lot 92, 66 ft. in front and 181.5 ft. deep, on Huntingdon Street and long lane, adjoining No. 93, for the sum of $13.25.

Witnesses:  Jos. Schuler and Jno. Brandon

Generation No. 3

     10.  Isaac M.3 Keepers (Isaac2, Isaac1) was born May 17, 179239, and died Unknown.  He married Unknown.

Notes for Isaac M. Keepers:

Western Maryland Genealogy, Frederick County Indentures, page 118:  " JP [Justice of the Peace] bind Isaac Keepers, an orphan aged 17 on the 17th of this month, with consent of his mother, to Jacob Weller, blacksmith, to age 21.  27 May 1809."

This statement fixes May 17, 1792, as this Isaac M. Keepers' birthdate.

Noted from the Torch Light and Public Advertiser, a Hagerstown area newspaper, Tuesday, February 10, 1818:

     "Five Dollars Reward

Ran away from the subscriber, living at Mount Pleasant Iron Works, Franklin County,

Pennsylvania, on Sunday the first inst., a Mulatto Man named

          JOHN BUTLER,

An apprentice to the forge business, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slim made, hang down look when spoken to, and large full eyes with a great deal of white in them.  Had on a dark mixed cloth coat and pantaloons, new fur hat, yellow Merseilles jacket, and one striped silk and cotton do [sic].  Whoever takes up said apprentice and secures him in any jail so that I get him again shall have the above reward, and all reasonable expenses ????  ????? [ at least two  illegible words here].

          ISAAC KEEPERS."

[I believe the "do" in the newspaper item above was short for "ditto," and that the phrase should probably be interpreted as "... and one striped silk and cotton jacket."  - JKK]

      15.  John B.3 Keepers (Isaac2, Isaac1) was born May 18, 1805 in Loretto, Cambria County, PA48, and died March 29, 187949.  He married Elizabeth Cretin August 09, 1830.  She was born 1809 in MD50,51, and died September 29, 185152.

Notes for John B. Keepers:

In July 1879 the estate of John B. Keepers was probated naming his son Alexius V. Keepers administrator.  The will provided that all of his estate go to Alexius who was to pay $300.00 to his daughter Catherine Ann Keepers Seabold and a like amount to the two children of his deceased daughter Helena.  [MERLE]

St. Mary's Church, Emmitsburg, MD, shows a baptism on July, 25, 1832, to John & Eliz. Creyton Keepers.

Since the spellings of Cretin also show as Creten, and since the marriage of John & Elizabeth Cretin  Keepers is August 9, 1830, it is assumed that John & Elz. Creyton Keepers are John & Elizabeth Cretin Keepers.  The child has no name listed in the 1832 baptismal record - it possibly died soon after birth.

The order, with approximate dates of birth, for these children is based on the order for John B.'s children listed in Sr. Stella's letter.

The book, "Catholic Trails West," Adams & O'Keefe, vol. 2, p. 680, (located at Greensburg Historical Society, 44 W. Otterman St., Greensburg, PA) has Keefers (sic), Isaac married to Ellen (sic) with a child John Baptist Born in 1805 at St. Michael's Church in Loretto.  I believe the last name and Helen's name are misspelled, and further, that the "B" in John B. Keepers name is for "Baptist."  In support of this assumption, it is noted that Rev. Gallitzin was the pastor at St. Michael's Church in Loretto and also baptized John B. Keepers.

More About John B. Keepers:

Residence 1: 1860, Emmitsburg, MD (Also, in 1830)58

Residence 2: 1830, District 5, Frederick Co., MD58

Notes for Elizabeth Cretin:

St. Mary's Church, Emmitsburg, MD, shows a baptism on July, 25, 1832, to John & Eliz. Creyton Keepers.

Since the spellings of Cretin also show as Creten, and since the marriage of John & Elizabeth Cretin Keepers is August 9, 1830, this person is assumed to be Elizabeth Cretin Keepers.  The child has no name listed in the 1832 baptismal record - it possibly died soon after birth.

The assumption by this genealogist is that this (unnamed) child was their first child.  Otherwise, Catherine Ann, born in 1836, 6 years after the marriage, would be their first.

"Marriage Licenses of Frederick County, 1811-1840," by Margaret E. Myers, has the spelling of Elizabeth's last name as Creighton.

Notes for Mary Cecilia Keepers:

Listed as Cecilia Keepers in the 1979 edition, she is listed in the household of John D. Nickam (sp?), wagon maker, in the 1850 census of Frederick County, MD  [M432, Roll 292, Page 160-161].  The 1850 census has her age as 14, which would have her born about 1836.  It may be inferred from her death in 1857 at age 20 that she may have been born in 1837.

Notes for Lycius Keepers:

This child is not listed in Sister Stella's letter, nor is he listed in Sister Mary Donnelly's book, "Arnold Livers Family of America."   I strongly suspect that he is a child of John's older brother Isaac about whom we know very little.  John’s other brothers’ families are fairly well known.  [JKK]

     33.  Americus C.4 Keepers (Isaac M.3, Isaac2, Isaac1) was born Abt. 1848, and died Aft. 1920.

Notes for Americus C. Keepers:

From the now known date of Isaac's birth, and the dates of birth for Nathan & Americus, it is not clear that these two are children of Isaac.  Previous assignment of these two individuals needs to be re-examined.  To date, analysis of census records has not resolved their parentage.  Perhaps birth records of Catholic churches in Franklin County, PA, will help.

Franklin Co. Courthouse, Chambersburg, PA:

Deed, Book 58, page 494:  October 13, 1875, Joseph & Eliza sold another lot to John Kenner(?) at public auction for $1550 apparently, at least partly, to satisfy creditors when Joseph & Eliza took on the debts of Amberson & McGinty.

Joseph's veteran's pension file mentions that there are six children, two living at home and under sixteen in 1878: Susan and Amanda.

Also in the household in 1870 is Adam Flory, age 68, a stonemason, born in MD, with personal estate listed at $6,000.   Adam is Eliza Ann's father according to www.familysearch.org.

Notes for Annie M. Keepers:

It appears that this child is listed as Josie A., age 17,  in the 1880 census, Waynesboro, PA.  However, it is more likely that there is an error in the record, and the child is really Josephine, age 14.

Notes for Josephine Keepers:

I believe that Josephine is the child referred to as Jennie in Sister Stella's 1968 letter.  Sister Stella was not aware that there were five daughters in Joseph & Eliza Keepers' family, and so she only listed three daughters.

In the 1880 census, Emmitsburg, Frederick Co., MD [T9, Roll 510, Page 214], Thomas Manning, age 45, and daughter Mary C., age 13, are the only persons listed, suggesting perhaps that Helena has died before 1880, and the other children may have left home.  Thomas was a house painter, born in Ireland.  Mary C. and her mother were born in Maryland.  This fits with what we know of this family.

In the 1880 census, Waynesboro, PA [T9, Roll 1132, page 568] is listed an Annie B. McGinley, age 21?, born in PA, a servant in the household of H. G. and Cora Bonebreak.  Annie may be a sister to George.  Interestingly, on the same census page is listed the family of M. L. & Clara Snyder in which Clara is a daughter of Eliza Jane (Keepers) Michaels of Group 4.  So, George, who married Amanda Keepers, Group 8, and Clara, whose mother was Eliza Jane Keepers, appear in the same neighborhood in Waynesboro.  The progenitors of groups 4 and 8 were first cousins, and Eliza Jane is a third generation descendant while Amanda is a fifth generation descendant.  It may well be that these neighbors did not know they were related.
