Core October 24, 1861 in Eagle, Wisconsin, daughter of George Core and Eliza Sopher.  She was born April 11, 1841 in Ohio, and died July 12, 1915 in Bloom City, WI.

Notes for James McMillen Keepers:

In addition to his handwritten record book, we have three books that were used in his ministry:  an 1869 edition of The Life and Epistles of St. Paul, by Rev. W. J. Conybeare, and Rev. J. S. Howson with preliminary dissertation by Rev. Leonard Bacon, National Publishing Co., Chicago, Illinois; a copy of The Revised New Testament and History of Revision, prepared by Professor Isaac H. Hall, LL> B., Ph. D., J. S. Goodman, publisher, and signed by James, September 29, 1881; a book of hymns, The Finest of the Wheat, George D. Elderkin, editor, R. R. McCabe and company, publishers, 1890.

James signed the hymnbook on January 28, 1892, Bloom City, Wisconsin.  His daughter, Mary, signed also.  There is a note on the flyleaf from O. R. Marris "to William Keepers to keep till you get done with it and then hand it down to some of the family to keep."  The connection between Marris and the Keepers family is unclear.

In 1880 census, Liberty, WI, Harriet's name is listed as Mariel.  We presume this is her middle name, since James was not married twice.  Also, the census has her parents born in New York.  This may be correct.  The 1900 census, Bloom City, WI, has her parents born in New Jersey.  [JKK]

Notes for Hayes J. Keepers:

Hayes was a Private during the Civil War.

Mustered in at Madison, WI, on December 14, 1861 at the age of sixteen.

Assigned to Company I, 12th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry.

Reported present on all company muster rolls from December 1861 to July 1865.

Reenlisted for additional three years while stationed at Hebron, Mississippi.

Sworn in at Natchez, Mississippi on January 5, 1864.

Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky.

There is no evidence that he was on furlough for that entire period.

[MERLE]

Notes: The 1880 census, Boone Co., NE, states that Hayes was born in Indiana - I believe that is in error.    The 1870 census, Richland Co., WI, has also in Hayes' household, his widowed mother and the four youngest of her living children:  George, Maria, John and Harriet.  The 1910 census, Richwood, WI, states that the marriage to Emma is Hayes' third marriage.   I believe this is an error.  His sister-in-law, Harriet M. (Core) Keepers, filed an affadavit, on December 13, 1913, attesting to just two marriages.  Hattie had written on behalf of his widow's claim for a pension.  Hattie signed by mark.

Notes for Abiah C. Milbourn:

The 1885 NE Census, Boone Co., lists Virginia as the birth state for both Abiah's parents.

National Archives pension file for Hayes J. Keepers:  An affadavit, December 22, 1913, from Bertha Starkey, age 35, of Cedar Rapids, Boone County,  Nebraska, stated that Abiah was her mother's aunt, and that Abiah died in Boone County.  On November 5, 1913, George W. Beardsley, age 61, and Cynthia Baker, age 58, attested that Abiah's funeral was held at the Adventist Church in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska.  A copy of the marriage registration lists Abiah's parents as Thomas and Minerva Milbourn.

Marriage: January 28, 1866, Eagle, Richland County, Wisconsin50,51

Notes for Emma R. McCormick:

The 1910 census, Richwood, WI, states that Hayes is Emma's third husband, and she had four children with two living in 1910.  Emma died intestate.  Her probate file at the Richland County courthouse, dated February 5, 1929, lists two surviving children:  Daisy B. Powell, Blue River, WI, and Almond L. Downing, Boise, Idaho.  Daisy was Administratrix.  Daisy and Almond received $56.68 each as their full share of the proceeds of Emma's estate.  The Inventory & Appraisal included real estate: lots 4 & 5, block 7, Excelsior, WI, value: $300, and a few pieces of household furniture, value: nil.

On November 5, 1913, Emma made application for the continuance of her deceased husband's pension.  The application was denied, but, since she was no longer married, she was able to restart the widow's pension due her from the service of her previous husband.  Emma wrote: " My great grandfather on my mother's side served as an American soldier in the Revolutionary war.  He was present at St. Clair's defeat November 4th, 1792 and was one of the few to escape.  He alone traveled 45 miles through the wilderness and reported the result of the battle to General Anthony Wayne, with whom he served during the remainder of his enlistment.

My grandfather on my mother's side served as an American soldier in the War of 1812 and three of my mother's brothers served with the Union army in the civil war.

My father, J. W. Lewis, was a volunteer soldier in Company H, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry in the civil war.

My son, Almon L. Downing, was a soldier in Company R, 13th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry.

My husband, John M. McCormack, was a soldier in the civil war in Company F, 33rd Wisconsin Infantry and drew a pension after the war under certificate #307466.  After his death, I drew a pension as his widow under certificate #599690 til the time of my marriage to the above named soldier, Hayes J. Keepers.

My husband, said Hayes J. Keepers, was a soldier in the civil war in Company I, 12th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry and 12th Regiment Wisconsin Veteran Infantry and a pensioner under certificate #1058153 and reference is here made to the proofs on file in the Pension Department Office by the said Hayes J. Keepers in support of the claim on which his said pension was granted.

I was born May 5, 1855, at Cold Water, Mercer County, Ohio, and moved with my parents to Vernon County, Wisconsin in November 1855.  We resided there till 1869, when we moved to Hokah, Minnesota, where I resided till December 24, 1874.  On that date ... I was married to Jacob Downingat the Town of Forest, Vernon County, Wisconsin. We resided [there] as husband and wife from the date of our marriage till September 4, 1880, and then moved to Chippewa County, Wisconsin, where we resided as husband and wife till March 12, 1888, on which date my husband Jacob died.  We were never separated or divorced and I was never married prior to my marriage to him.

After Jacob's death, I continued to reside in Chippewa County, Wisconsin, and did not marry again till I married Ira N. Richmond, July 4, 1890.  I obtained a divorce from him in the Circuit Court for Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, October 8, 1894, on my application.  I lived with him as his wife in Chippewa County, Wisconsin from the time of my marriage to him till a short time prior to my obtaining said divorce, when I separated from him, though I still continued to reside in Chippewa County.

After the divorce I continued to reside in Chippewa County till October 9, 1864, when I married John M. McCormack of Richland County, Wisconsin and went to that county to live with him.  We lived there together till the date of his death November 16, 1901.  After his death I continued to reside in Richland County and did not marry again till I married Hayes J. Keepers September 24, 1903.  I resided with him in the Town of Richwood, Richland County, Wisconsin, till the date of his death, May 16, 1913.  I continued to reside there and have never remarried.

I am now very poor and needy and am not able to earn a livelihood.  I have no property except a little home worth about $400 and some household furniture. I have no children or relatives who are able to keep me."

Child of Hayes Keepers and Abiah Milbourn is:

26       i.   Electa J.3 Keepers, born 1867 in Wisconsin54,55; died Bef. 1890.  She married Louis D. Broadbent October 24, 1888 in Boone Co., NE; ... by Joseph Hamilton, County Judge.; born 1858 in Wisconsin.

Notes for Electa J. Keepers:

In the 1900 census, Cedar Pct., Boone Co., NE, (T623, Roll 917, Page 76), "Lewis" D. Broadbent appears with wife Susan and 4 children, all belonging to Susan.  Lewis & Susan were married in 1890.  This suggests that Electa probably died before 1890 - possibly disease or childbirth, but I am speculating.

     27       i.   Genevieve3 Keepers, born 1910 in Wisconsin.

Notes for Genevieve Keepers:

In the 1920 census, Richwood, WI, the surname Osgood precedes Genevieve and appears to be crossed out, suggesting that Osgood was a mistake by the census taker.  However, the name, Osgood, does not appear anywhere else on the page.  [JKK]

Notes for Ora M. Keepers:

Obituary: Nebraska State Archives, Lincoln, NE:  Friday, Sept. 8, 1905 - The Geneva Gazette

"Ora M. Keepers was born Oct. 18, 1881 in Bennett township, and died Friday, Aug. 25, 1905.  She was the second child of Diver (sic) and Dora Keepers.  The father died when she was 2 1/2 years old.  Soon afterwards, her mother built a home in Grafton where she resided until 1890 when she removed to California.  After 5 years, on account of failing health, she returned to Grafton but found no relief from the dreaded disease that threatened her and succumbed to its ravages on the following January while at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Fones Cole.  Her brother died the following April, thus leaving Ora the only survivor of the immediate family.  Since February, 1896, she has made her home with Miss Nellie Stevens.   The subject of this sketch was in fairly good health until the spring of 1903.  For 2 1/2 years she has been a great sufferer, confined to her bed for 32 weeks.  Her patience and cheerful unselfishness have been a marvel to all with whom she has been associated, and her departure leaves a void in many hearts.  A large concourse of friends assembled at the house Sunday at 2:00 o'clock to observe the last sad rites.  Rev. Hammond of the Congregational Church conducted the services."
