Descendants of Joseph Keepers, Jr.

Generation No. 1

     1.  Joseph1 Keepers, Jr.

Notes for Joseph Keepers, Jr.:

See group 1 for antecedents and siblings of Joseph Keepers.

From the 1790 Census, Washington Co., MD:  Joseph Keepers, 2 free wh. m. > 16, 2 free wh. m. < 16, and 5 free wh. females.  This seems to indicate that there were at most 7 children (3 males, 4 females) in the family in 1790.

The 1800 census, Washington Co., MD, has the household of Joseph Keepers with 1 male under 10 (Jonathon), 1 male 16-26 (Isaac), 1 female under 10 (?), 1 female 10-16 (Rachel), 1 female 16-26 (Sarah or Eleanor).  Both Joseph and his wife are listed as 45 & over.  The older children must have been gone by 1800.  The census also has William, Joseph's son, age 26-45, wife age 16-26, and daughter, under 10, living in Washington Co. in 1800.

The 1810 census, Wash. Co., MD, shows only the household of Isaac Keepers, age 16-26, a wife in the same age group, and two children (1 male, 1 female) under 10.  This suggests that perhaps, Joseph, Isaac's father, and William, Isaac's brother, and their families had moved away before 1810.

The 1820 census, 5-dist., Washington Co., MD, [M33, Roll 46, Page 138], lists Nancy Griffith as head of household that had two females over 45, including Nancy.  Perhaps Nancy is the female over 45 in the 1810 household of Silvanus Griffith.  According to HeritageQuestOnline, there is no Eleanor Griffith nor Sylvanus (Silvanus)Griffith in Maryland in 1820 censuses.

     7.  Isaac2 Keepers (Joseph1) was born July 18, 1782, and died May 25, 1855.  He married Margaret Elizabeth Harper July 18, 1807.  She was born Bef. 1790 in Maryland7, and died Bef. 1860.

Notes for Isaac Keepers:

Isaac Keepers migrated to Rapids Forge in Ross County, Ohio, in 1830 and is the apparent ancestor of the entire Ross County Keepers line.  He resided there for the remainder of his life.  He was a forgeman and his sons, Joseph Greer Keepers, John Schnell Keepers, and Henry Clay Keepers were later employed by the Woodbridge interests (owners of Rapid Forge).  John was a wagon maker, Joseph a clerk, and Henry a tenant farmer on Woodbridge land.  He also farmed sixty acres of his own land.  The fact that he was consumptive probably kept him out of the iron works.  Isaac's daughter, Mary Eleanor, married George McDole, also a forgeman, who went to the Benner Forge after closing of the Woodbridge interests at Rapids Forge in 1861.  The subsequent history of Isaac's other children is unknown.   [6-2-1973, MERLE]

The 1850 census, Paxton Twp., Ross Co., OH, has Isaac 62 yrs. old and wife, Elizabeth, 53 yrs.  This would imply a birth year of about 1788 for Isaac.  Note, however, Kezia, a brother of Isaac , appears to have been born in 1788.   Also in the household in 1850: a  daughter, Maria, age 25, born in Virginia, Catherine, 23, born in Ohio, and Henry, 21, born in Ohio.

The 1830 census, same place, has all 11 children in the household in Ohio.

Notes for Margaret Elizabeth Harper:

In the 1840 census, Paxton Twp., Ross Co., OH, Isaac's wife is listed in the 50-60 age group.  The 1830 census, same place, has her in the 40-50 age group.  The 1850 census, same place, has wife, "Elizabeth," listed as age 53.  Since Margaret does not appear in the 1860 census, it appears that she died before 1860.

Generation No. 4

     26.  J. S. L.4 Keepers (William Harper3, Isaac2, Joseph1) was born 1835, and died November 08, 1893 in Presbyterian Hospital, NYC.  He married (1) Eliza Whitaker, daughter of Joseph Whitaker and --- McPherson.  She was born February 26, 1846 in England, and died May 27, 1919 in ... at 2:15 a.m.; Brooklyn, NY, at age 73 yrs., 3 mo., 1 d..

Some of the information here, regarding Louis, comes from his death certificate, #39519, on file at the Municipal Archives, Manhattan, NY

Since the death certificate lists Louis as a widower, it is assumed that Eliza & Louis were divorced prior to his death. (See notes on a daughter, Daisy M. Keepers.)  Although Louis was a "widower" at death, Eliza was still alive in 1893.

"Marylanders in the Confederacy," Harry Wright Newman, appendix A, p. 191, references the Maryland Guerilla Zouaves.  On page 38, Captain Louis Keepers (or his company) was assigned to the Louisiana troops by the Secretary of War.   They became the 2nd Company C, Nelligan's LA Infantry.  [2004 - citation provided by Elizabeth Garner]

Residence 3: 1880, 20th Ward, West 26th St., between 8th and 9th Aves., NY58

Notes for Eliza Whitaker:

Some of the information here, regarding Eliza, comes from her death certificate, #13294, on file at the Municipal Archives, Manhattan, NY.

Her death certificate states that she had been a resident of New York City for 63 years, which was also the time she had been in the U. S.  On the death certificate, her parents are listed as Joseph Whitaker, born in England, and (unknown) McPherson, born in Scotland.

An interesting story was published in the New York Herald dated 5-28-1919. It was printed upon the death of Louis' wife Eliza Whitaker, then of Brooklyn, New York. The newspaper story stated that Louis Keepers was a Colonel in the Confederate states Army and was captured behind the Union Army lines while operating as a spy. He was court-martialed and sentenced to be shot. He somehow got word to his wife, Eliza Whitaker Keepers, who went to Washington, obtained an audience with President Lincoln, and after review of the case the President ordered the sentence suspended. Colonel Keepers lived for several years after the war.  This story has, so far, been unverifiable.

45       i.   Charles William5 Keepers, born April 05, 1865 in Philadelphia, PA59,60.  He married Elizabeth Menser 1889 in Cambria Co., PA.

Notes for Charles William Keepers:

In the Cambria County Courthouse, Edensburg, PA, the marriage index, page 24-1, license vol. page 6-206, needs to be checked.    The approximate age of Charles W. Keepers supports the assumption that this Charles in Cambria Co. is a son of Louis & Eliza (Whitaker) Keepers, but it is not definitive. [JKK]

The 1910 census, Brooklyn, NY, has Charles & Elizabeth (no children) living in proximity to Eliza Keepers - supports the hypothesis that this Charles is her son.  [2005, JKK]

     49       v.   Daisy M. Keepers, born February 21, 1872.

Notes for Daisy M. Keepers:

On June 30, 1884, in Kings Co. Courthouse, 360 Adams St., Brooklyn, NY, a petition for Guardianship of Daisy M. Keepers was filed by Eliza Keepers, her mother.  The address given was 216 Freeman St., Greenpoint.  The petition states that no general guardian had been appointed by will or deed of father or mother, and that the father was dead.  Of course, in 1884, Louis was alive, so it appears that Louis & Eliza were divorced between 1880, when the census shows them living together, and 1884, the date of the guardianship petition.  The petition stated that Daisy owned property valued at $40.  The petition was successful.  The reason for the petition is unclear.  The birth record for Daisy needs to be examined in order to sort out the details.

50      vi.   Maude Louise Keepers, born 1875.  She married Edward J. Sullivan 190765; born Abt. 1885 in New York66.

Notes for Maude Louise Keepers:

In the 1880 census, 20th ward, NY, she is listed as Maud Louize.  In the 1910 census, 15th ward, Brooklyn, Maude is listed as 29 years old - 6 years older than her husband.  In 1920, they are both 35 years old, according to the census in Brooklyn.
