Descendants
of Joseph Hayes Keepers
Generation
No. 1
1.
Joseph Hayes1 Keepers was born Bet. 1791 - 1800 in
Chester County, PA, and died December 06, 1842. He married Hannah P. Jordan. She was born 1807 in Pennsylvania1, and died
April 28, 1873 in Illinois.
Notes
for Joseph Hayes Keepers:
See
group 1, American Colonial Period, for details on siblings, etc., for Joseph
Keepers.
On
March 9, 1862, the 200 acres in Jefferson Township involved in Joseph Keepers'
will (Joseph, the father of Israel Jordan Keepers) were sold by the various
heirs for $1,875.00 to Israel Jordan Keepers and Joseph Keepers, Jr., (Israel's
brother) as sole joint owners. The 100
acre farm in Monroe Township acquired by Joseph's (Israel's father) heirs in
1844 was sold at the same time to the same grantees, namely, Israel J., and
Joseph Jr.. The consideration for the
latter parcel is not made clear in the records. It is of interest to note that the grantors of these deeds
include the husbands of two of Joseph's (Israel's father) daughters, namely,
Robert Warnock and his wife Hannah Marie Keepers, and Jacob Smith, Jr. and
Phelinda Keepers, his wife. Joseph
Smith and May I. Smith also appear as grantors, Joseph Smith being the
intermediary by whom the title of William H. (brother of Israel) Keepers'
children Martha Phelinda and Joseph was conveyed after their guardian, Israel,
had conveyed to Joseph Smith. Hannah P.
Jordan Keepers was also a grantor. The
names of the other four daughters, Mary Elizabeth, Sara Ann, Phoebe Ann, and
Henrietta, do not appear as grantors on either deed. Three additional grantors do appear on each, namely, Ephraim
Huffman, James Paxton, and James H. Oxley, attorney. The latter are not identified as husbands of some of the
daughters or fiduciaries of minor children.
The absence of definite dates of birth, marriage, and death makes this
transaction somewhat unintelligble.
That two of Joseph (Israel's father) Keepers' daughters were alive and
unmarried in 1863 is apparent from a transaction wherein one Thomas Jones
deeded to Mary Keepers and Sara Keepers 80 acres in Monroe Township just south
of the Birmingham village limits.
Further confusion exists in that Joseph Smith's wife in March, 1862, was
May I. Smith and Mary Elizabeth Keepers husband's name is also Joseph
Smith. Either the Joseph Smith in each
instance is not one and the same person or May I. Smith died and the widower
married Mary Elizabeth at some date subsequent to 1863.
In 1864
and 1865 Israel J. and Joseph Jr. sold the two farms they had purchased from
the other heirs. The 200 acre farm was
sold to Benjamin Borton for $4,000.00 and the 100 acre farm at Birmingham to
Joseph Smith. A sawmill operated by
them for many winters probably went with the 200 acre farm.
Israel
then migrated to Illinois in April, 1866, and bought a 125 acre farm in
Goodfarm Township, Grundy County.
Joseph remained in Ohio at Cambridge.
Israel's
daughter, Mary Jane (Jennie), writes in 1925 that although her father had only
a common school education, he held many offices of trust both Ohio and Illinois
. Her parents retired from the farm in
1881, moving to Gardner, Illinois.

William H.2 Keepers (Joseph Hayes1)16
was born Bef. 1826, and died 1861. He
married Jane Preston May 17, 1847 in Guernsey Co., OH17,
daughter of Elija Preston and Martha.
Notes
for William H. Keepers:
There
is confusion concerning the death date of William H. Keepers. Mary Jane (Jennie) Keepers, Group 5, writes
in 1925 that he migrated to Illinois in 1850 dying soon after from cholera,
leaving two children, Martha Phelinda Keepers and Joseph H. Keepers. Notes on Israel Jordan Keepers (William H.'s
brother and Jennie's father) set the date of death for William H. Keepers as
1861, according to the appointment of Israel Jordan Keepers as guardian of
William's minor children. We now
[MERLE, 6-2-1973] accept 1861 as correct and speculate that Jennie Keepers may
have confused William's death with that of his wife. We do not have the date of Jane Preston's death. [MERLE]
The
wording in the text of Joseph Keepers' will (William H.'s father) implies that
William H. was the eldest son of Joseph and Hannah. [JKK]

Israel Jordan2 Keepers (Joseph Hayes1) was
born April 03, 1827 in Pennsylvania22, and died October 03,
1892. He married Mary Kimble
August 22, 1850, daughter of Adam Kimble and Ann Huffman. She was born June 17, 1831 in Ohio23,
and died January 10, 1917.
Notes
for Israel Jordan Keepers:
Enlisted
in Company I, 176th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served three years
until the end of the War Between the States, receiving an honorable discharge
in June, 1865.
Israel's
brother, William H., died in 1861 and although no record of administered estate
is found, records do show that on December 3, 1861, Israel J. Keepers was
appointed guardian of William's minor children Martha Phelinda and Joseph. On February 2, 1864, Israel J. Keepers was
also made guardian of John A. Kimball, age 16, an heir of David Kimball,
deceased. (Note again the variant of
Kimble/Kimball in the different records.)
A final account and formal resignation of the quardianship was filed
April 9, 1866.
On
March 9, 1862, the 200 acres in Jefferson Township involved in Joseph Keepers'
will (Joseph, the father of Israel Jordan Keepers) were sold by the various
heirs for $1,875.00 to Israel Jordan Keepers and Joseph Keepers, Jr., (Israel's

The latter are not identified as husbands of some of the daughters or

absence of definite dates of birth, marriage, and death makes this transaction

census, Goodfarm Twp., Grundy, IL:
Winnifred KEEPERS, Daughter,
Single, age 13 , born in IL. Occ: At
School Fa: PA Mo: OH. The absence of an Olive Keepers in the
household could mean that Olive's middle name was Winnifred, or vice
versa. Jennie Wheeler showed a penchant
for listing relatives by their middle names.
Any other explanation would require another child not listed in Jennie
Wheeler's 1925 letter, which is very doubtful.
