Notes for John Andrew Keepers:

In a History of Bedford, Fulton, and Somerset Counties, pub. in 1884, p. 663, John A. Keepers is listed as a property owner in 1852 in Bedford County, Taylor Twp.  If present day Hwy 655 is taken west out of Hustontown, PA, the J. A. Keepers property lies roughly northwest of where Hwy 655 intersects Wooden Bridge Creek.  The property is shown on an old map as "J. A. Keepers heirs."

Note:  In 1850 Fulton county was formed out of Bedford county.  The 1840 federal census shows John and family in Bedford county, Dublin Twp.  In 1850, Dublin Twp. was moved to Fulton county (presumably merged with or renamed as Taylor Twp.).

The 1850 federal census, reported in Fulton Co. Historical Society publication: vol. 10, 1988, page 83, lists the household of John A. Keepers, age 55, farmer, Louisa J., age 45, Alice, age 21, Stephen, age 19, labourer, William, age 16, labourer, and Louisa, age 13.

Notes for Samuel Michaels:

Also in the household in the 1850 census:  Jeremiah Ramsey, age 20, and Silas Taylor, age 18, both shoemakers, born in PA.

On the same page in the 1850 census [M432, Roll 783, Page 14] are David L. Michaels and family, 24, a tailor, born in MD, and Jacob E. Michaels and family, 38, a hatter, born in NY.  These are possibly brothers to Samuel.

In the 1860 census, Samuel is listed as born in Pennsylvania - in the 1880 census, McConnellsburg, PA, his daughters list their father as born in New York.  We believe that New York is correct.   Also in the household in 1860:  George McCreary, age 21, a shoemaker, born in PA.  Samuel is not listed in the 1870 census, and we presume he died between 1863 and 1870.

Stephen Folk Keepers was a Sergeant in Company H, 158th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry.  [MERLE]

The 1870 federal census for Fulton Co., Taylor Twp. lists the family of Stephen with their ages.  Stephen is listed with middle initial "J" in the 1870 census report; this appears to be in error; "F" appears to be correct.  The "Directory & Handbook of Fulton Co.," 1890, compiled by J. E. Downs lists Keepers, Stephen F., carpenter, Hustontown (book in Bedford Co. Historical Society holdings, Bedford, PA).  Stephen's military files at the National Archives have middle initial F throughout.  He is listed as Stephen V. in the 1900 census, Taylor, PA.
