Descendants of William Keepers
Group 3: Harrison County, Ohio
Generation No. 1
See
group 6, Washington Co., MD, for details about antecedents and siblings of
William.
1.
WILLIAM2 KEEPERS
(JOSEPH1)1,2 was born June 18, 1771 in
MD3, and died December 18, 1842. He married ELIZABETH KING March 15, 1800 in Hagerstown, MD,
daughter of JOHN KING. She was born
Abt. 1785 in MD3.
The
first appearance of the name Keepers in the office of the recorder of Harrison
County was the entry of a deed on February 7, 1819 wherein William Vaughn
conveyed to William Keepers for a consideration of $40, lots 28, 29, 30, and 31
in the Western Liberties of New Rumley.
Nineteen years later, January 6, 1838, he sold the same lots to William
Wise. The stated consideration of $25
is believed a nominal or fictional amount.
On February 3, 1838, William Keepers and his wife, Elizabeth, together
with John King (her father) conveyed to Margaret Crossen a tract of land in the
northwest quarter of section 27, Township 11, Range 5, 'along the road between
the Keepers Mill and the Aslund Mill,' containing 75 square perches.
No
record of the acquisition of this property by William Keepers was found in
Harrison County but such acquisition may have been recorded in Jefferson
County, at Steubenville, from the territory of which Harrison County was formed
in 1812. It is also probable he owned
the land in the county previous to its becoming a discrete area.
John
King, a widower, father-in-law of William Keepers, apparently lived with or in
close relationship with the latter and his daughter. John King's will, probated October 31, 1842, and dated April 13,
1836, bequeathed $150.00 to his grandson, Isaac Keepers, same to be paid 'after
the death of his father and mother.' He
bequeathed only $10.00 to his daughter, Nancy Barne, and all the remainder of
his property to William and Elizabeth, William to be executor.
William
Keepers' will, on file in the office of the probate clerk at Cadiz, Ohio, was
probated in May, 1843. The will, dated
May 11, 1842, was witnessed by Abraham Barger and Michael Conoway. It bequeathed to his wife, Elizabeth, all of
his estate for the support of her and his family subject to her control during
her lifetime and included also 'the estate bequeathed to me by my
father-in-law, John King.' The will
directed that after his wife's funeral expenses were met, there would be
distributed to his daughters and one grandson $20.00 each. These daughters are listed as: Casandra
Fowler, Elizabeth Orr, Rachel Keepers, Nancy Hoagland, and Jamima Keepers
Maxwell. The grandson was William
Keepers Maxwell, only child of his deceased daughter, Sara Ann Keepers Maxwell. The remainder of his estate was to be divided
between his two sons, William and Isaac, and Isaac was to have his 'mare of a
dun cullar.' [MERLE]
The
ages of William's wife and some children are based on comparison of the gender
and ages of children/mother that are listed in the 1820 and 1840 censuses for
Archer Twp., Harrison Co., OH. Three
persons of the household are engaged in agriculture.
Also in
the household in the 1830 census, Archer Twp., Harrison Co., OH, is a male
70-80 years of age. This is probably
John King, referred to above.

2.
CASANDRA3 KEEPERS (WILLIAM2, JOSEPH1)
was born 1801 in Maryland. She married
JOHN FOWLER April 10, 1822. He was born
1800 in Virginia.
Notes
for CASANDRA KEEPERS:
The
1860 census, Jasper Co., IA, is unclear regarding Casandra's age. It appears that the number could be 59. The other possibilities are 29 or 39, but
the other 2's and 3's written on the page are clearly different. There is a 5 on the census page that
suggests that the census taker may have missed the horizontal stroke on the 5
for Casandra.
In
order to locate this family, I searched all John Fowler families in 1860 in the
U. S. where John was in his late 30's or older. Heritage Quest Online returned 374 John Fowlers in 1860, and
about half were listed in their late 30's or older. Only one family listed a Casandra - she was born in Maryland and
3 children born in Ohio. One John
Fowler had a wife Cassie, but the entire family was born in North
Carolina. We conclude by this
exhausting, yet possibly not quite an exhaustive process, that John &
Casandra Fowler in Iowa in 1860 is our Casandra Keepers family. If I am in error about Casandra's age in the
1860 census, it would seem most likely that she would be 29 years of age and
probably a daughter of Casandra (Keepers) Fowler.
Perhaps
a Fowler descendant from Iowa can shed light on this in the future.

ELIZABETH3 KEEPERS (WILLIAM2, JOSEPH1)
was born Abt. 1808 in Virginia. She
married THOMAS ORR. He was born 1804 in
Pennsylvania.
Notes
for ELIZABETH KEEPERS:
The
1830 census, Archer Twp., Harrison Co., OH [M19, Roll 133, Page 168], has a
Thomas Orr household with 1 female, 20-30, probably Elizabeth, 1 female 15-20,
possibly a sister, and 1 female under 5.
Thomas is between 20 and 30 years of age.
That
the family of Thomas & Elizabeth Orr in the 1860 census, Illinois, is our
Thomas & Elizabeth (Keepers) Orr has not been established with 100%
accuracy. A search of the census
records in 1860 found no other likely possibility. More work needs to be done to establish this line for certain.

the household in 1880: Mary Tillman,

SARAH ANN3 KEEPERS (WILLIAM2, JOSEPH1)

She married ALEXANDER E. MAXWELL January 17, 1832.
Notes
for SARAH ANN KEEPERS:
See

Notes
for ALEXANDER E. MAXWELL:
In the
1840 census, Warren Twp., Jefferson Co., OH [M704, Roll 405, Page 141], the
Alexander Maxwell household has 1 male, 30-40, 2 males 60-70, and 1 female,
15-20. It has not been verified that
the female is Sarah Ann (Keepers) Maxwell.
The 1860 census, same place [M653, Roll 993, Page 46], shows an
Alexander Maxwell, age 65, born in VA; also in the household is Benjamin
Wilson, age 14, born in Ohio.

WILLIAM V.3 KEEPERS (WILLIAM2, JOSEPH1)
was born 1819 in OH, and died February 04, 1896 in Urichsville, Tuscarawas Co.,
OH19. He married
SARAH PRITCHARD20 May 04, 1848. She was born 1831 in OH, and died Aft. 189621.
Notes
for WILLIAM V. KEEPERS:
William
V. Keepers was a horse trader and made many trips to Baltimore where he sold
horses, but his principal business was marble cutting and dealing in tombstones. His residence and place of business was at
the south east corner of Fourth and Water Streets, Uhrichsville, Ohio.
He was
a prime mover in founding the first Masonic Lodge in Uhrichsville.
A
'History of Tuscarawas County', published by Warner Beers and Company, Chicago,
1884, contains a biographical sketch of John H. Lukens, a shoe manufacturer of
Dennison, Ohio, wherein it states, page 830, that Luken's daughter, Josephine,
was married to William Keepers (no added particulars). The book previously referred to William's
wife as Sarah Pritchard. If the former
is not in error, the explanation could, of course, be a second marriage. [MERLE]
The
1880 census, OH, also lists in the household:
Jennie Baennen, age 30, occ: D. Servant, with father and mother both
born in Ohio.
The
1870 census, Urichsville, OH, also lists in the household: Daniel Knote, age
35, born in OH; occupation: marble cutter.

Charles, age 68, single, born in Ireland of Scottish descent. Year of transport to US for Isabella is 1856
and year of naturalization is 1861.
Parents of the sisters are listed as born in Scotland. [Jan., 2004 - JKK]

ISAAC B.3 KEEPERS (WILLIAM2, JOSEPH1)
was born Abt. 1825 in OH35.
He married MARY ANN HICKMAN September 28, 1843. She was born 1826 in OH.
Notes
for ISAAC B. KEEPERS:
The
1860 census, Madison, WI, includes children William and Elizabeth, both age 16,
Alice, 12 and Charles, 3. Also in the
household in 1860 is Ann Stowel(sp?), age 18, born in New York, a servant.
In
1860, the value of the personal estate of Isaac B. was listed as $200; in 1870,
the value was listed as $2000.
In the
1870 census, Chicago, IL, children listed are:
Henry, age 23, bridge builder, Alice, age 20, and Charles, age 14. I believe Henry is the child shown as
William H. Ages of individuals in this
family seem to be somewhat variable, perhaps depending on who is talking to the
census taker. [Jan., 2005 - JKK]
The
1850 census, Scioto Twp., Ross Co., OH, has a J. B. Keepers, age 27, wife Mary
A., age 24, and children William H., 5, Sarah E., 4, and Raschel A., 3. This may be Isaac B. Keepers and family,
although the absence of William H.'s possible twin sister Elizabeth is
puzzling. The daughters Sarah and
Raschel may have died before they moved to Madison, WI, where the family shows
up in the 1860 census.

NANCY4 ORR (ELIZABETH3 KEEPERS, WILLIAM2,
JOSEPH1) was born May 1842 in OH40,41. She married FRANCIS MARIAN BEHYMER, son of
SOLOMON BEHYMER. He was born October
1840 in OH42,43.
Notes
for NANCY ORR:
The
1870 census, Richfield Twp., Adams Co., IL, appears to have an error in Nancy's
age - it should read 28, but seems to read 23.
Also, she is born in Ohio in the
1860 and 1880 censuses, but the record shows Illinois in 1870.
In the
1900 census, Barry Twp., Pike Co., IL, Nancy indicates 8 children born to her
and 3 living.
In the
1910 census, 8th ward, East St. Louis, IL [T624, Roll 322, Page 210], Nancy is
shown living with her daughter Nellie and family. Nellie's children (4 out of 5 living) are daughter Marian, 12,
and sons Fred, 10, Ralph, 9, and Anton, 6.
The husband's name is unclear.
It seems to be William Keull, but could also be Kaull or Krull, or
something else. This family name will
have to be verified before we add the family to the genealogy.

ISAAC N.4 KEEPERS (WILLIAM V.3, WILLIAM2,
JOSEPH1) was born September 09, 1849 in Uhrichsville,
Ohio, and died April 07, 1890. He
married CHRISTINA BALL December 23, 1869.
She was born 1848, and died 1934.
Notes
for ISAAC N. KEEPERS:
Isaac
N. Keepers followed his father's business in monuments, having an establishment
at Scio, Ohio. 'Biographical Record of
Harrison and Carroll Counties', J. H. Beers & Co., Chicago, 1891, indicates
Isaac N. Keepers was born at Uhrichsville September 9, 1849, and married
Christina Ball of Leesburg, Ohio. He
was a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the Board of Trustees of Scio
College. His daughter, Clara, married a
faculty member named Bell. This book
describes him as one of the most prominent marble dealers in eastern Ohio, and
adds that he 'by his own exertion acquired a competency that placed him in
comparatively independent circumstances.'
He
enlisted in the Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company F, February 17, 1864, and was
discharged June 14, 1866. Although the
roster gives his birth as 1846, other sources indicate that he enlisted at the
age of fourteen and was on active duty through the last year of the war and
served an additional year after the close.
We have
three different years listed for Isaac's birth. The Ohio Volunteer Cavalry lists 1846; his headstone lists the
year as 1848, and the Biographical Record of Harrison County lists the year as
1849.
Christina
Ball was born in 1848, died in 1934, and is buried with her husband in the
Grandview Cemetery.
No
administrator of Isaac N. Keepers' will is recorded; however, records do show
that in 1908 Christina Keepers disposed of certain real estate in Scio, and she
was joined in the conveyance by the following who are described as the 'widow
and all heirs of Isaac N. Keepers, late of Scio': Nellie G. Keepers, Henry V.
Keepers, Maurice M. Keepers, Chester A. Keepers, Mary Elizabeth Keepers, and
Clara Gertrude Bell.

for MINNIE "RUTH" MCWILLIAMS:
Family
came to Chicago from Boston when Ruth won a 4 year scholarship to University of
Chicago. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After College she went to Lovington, IL, to
teach school where she met her husband.
Grandma was engaged to someone else when she met Robert and she always
said it was love at first sight. They eloped on a rainy night. He came for her in a horse drawn buggy; they
were both wearing white clothing and on the way to get married a wheel came off
the buggy and they were both thrown into the mud.....and that is how the
justice of the peace married them.
Grandma
was a very special lady, well educated
and proper. Grandpa died young and I
remember asking her why she never remarried.
She emphatically said "because there could never be another man on
the face of this earth that could compare to your grandfather." That really blew me away.
