of William Keepers
Generation
No. 1
1.
William1 Keepers was born August 21, 1747 in Berks
County, PA, and died November 1827. He
married Ann Hayes. She was born
Unknown, and died December 1838.
Notes
for William Keepers:
See Group 1, American Colonial Period, for details on the antecedents for this family. Group 1 also has citations for many of the details listed in this family group.
Notes
for Ann Hayes:
Ann
Hayes is the apparent origin of the given name Hayes that occurs so frequently
in the Keepers families of Wisconsin and Guernsey County, Ohio. After William Keepers' death, she married
again and had a daughter Ann. [MERLE]
Children
of William Keepers and Ann Hayes are:
+ 2 i. Joseph Hayes2 Keepers, born Bet.
1791 - 1800 in Chester County, PA; died December 06, 1842 in Guernsey County,
Ohio.
3 ii. Catharine Keepers, born Unknown; died
December 10, 1850.
Notes for Catharine Keepers:
In the Orphans Court of Chester Co., PA, on April 30, 1851,
an order was awarded in support of the petition of the heirs of Catharine
Keepers for the appointment of seven men to divide and value the estate. Catharine died intestate, unmarried, and
without issue, and leaving neither father nor mother.
The relatives of Catharine named in the document are:
John Keepers (wife Mary), a brother, residing in Guernsey
Co., OH; nephews and nieces, children of Jane, a sister now deceased, who was
intermarried with Jesse Woodward, to wit: Elizabeth, intermarried with John W.
Blade, residing in Beaver Co., PA, Mary Ann Woodward residing in Chester Co.,
PA, William W. Woodward and Catharine Woodward residing in Beaver Co., PA, and
Sarah Jane Woodward, a minor, who has as guardian, Thomas Jackson, both
residing in Chester Co., PA;
nephews and nieces, children of Joseph Keepers, a deceased
brother, to wit: Phebe Ann intermarried with James Paxton, residing in Grundy
Co., IL, William H. Keepers, Sarah Jane intermarried with Ephraim Huffman, and
Israel Jordan Keepers residing in Guernsey Co., OH, and Joseph Keepers, Mary
Elizabeth Keepers, Hannah Maria Keepers, Henrietta Keepers and Philena Keepers,
the last five named of whom are minors - residing in Guernsey Co., OH, and
having Elisha Phipps as their guardian who resides in Chester Co., PA; and
leaving a sister, Elizabeth, intermarried with Hayes Jackson, residing in
Chester Co., PA.
The estate included land "situate in the township of
East Marlborough [Chester Co., PA], bounded by the lands of Jonathan Jackson,
Jr., Benjamin Jackson and others, containing about three acres of land, more or
less.."
The seven men appointed to divide and value the estate
were James Jefferis, Moses Keech, Daniel Pennock, Peter Rubincam, Johnson
Marshall, Jacob Entrikin, and William Chalfant.
Those living within forty miles of the court were notified
by personal mail of the order, and the rest by publication in a Philadelphia
newspaper for three consecutive weeks, June 13, 20, and 27, 1851.
+ 4 iii. Elizabeth Keepers, born 1808 in Pennsylvania
+ 5 iv. Jane Keepers, died Bef. 1851.

Joseph Hayes2 Keepers (William1) was born
Bet. 1791 - 1800 in Chester County, PA1, and died December
06, 1842 in Guernsey County, Ohio2. He married Hannah P. Jordan. She was born 1807 in Pennsylvania3, and died
April 28, 1873 in Illinois4.
Notes
for Joseph Hayes Keepers:
The
grand-daughter of Joseph Hayes Keepers, Mary Jane (Jennie) Keepers Wheeler -
Group 5: Keepers Family of Guernsey County, Ohio -
writes in 1925 "Joseph
Hayes Keepers was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and there lived and
married Hannah P. Jordan. They moved to
western Pennsylvania about 1812 and settled in Beaver County. About 1835 they moved to Guernsey County,
Ohio. There he was a pioneer and became
a substantial farmer. He died in
Guernsey County December 6, 1842. Hannah
P. Jordan died in Illinois April 28, 1873." - See notes under his brother,
John M. Keepers, regarding property Joseph owned while residing in Beaver
County, Pennsylvania.
The
first record of the Keepers name in Guernsey County was a deed executed by
Jacob Huffman in 1836 conveying 200 acres in sections 2 and 9, Jefferson
Township, to Joseph Keepers for a consideration of $1,500. This is in the vicinity of the village of
Winchester, now Winterset, Ohio.
Will
record B22 in the probate court of Guernsey County contains the will of Joseph
Hayes Keepers which was executed September 20, 1842 and probated April 17,
1843. The testator named his wife,
Hannah, and son, William, executors.
Item 1
of the will directed the executors to hold the 200 acre farm in Jefferson
Township until his youngest child should become of age and that the farm was to
be 'rented out and the rent received to be used for raising the family.' A further bequest of $1,100 was made to his
wife, Hannah, and son, William,' for the express purpose of purchasing 80 acres
of land we now have in contemplation and to move the family to said land until
my youngest child is of lawful age.'
Item 2
of the will directs that from the proceeds of the estate each of his children
be paid $100.00 on the day of his or her marriage. These were by name:
Phoebe Ann, Israel J., Joseph, Philena, William H., Hannah, Mary Elizabeth,
Sarah Ann, and Henrietta.
Item 3
of the will provided $400.00 for improvements to the 80 acre farm that was to
be purchased.
Item 4
of the will bequeathed to the wife, Hannah, her lawful share of the estate when
the youngest child came of age.
Item 5
of the will directed that $1,000 should be let out at interest to some safe
person and secured by mortgage until the youngest child came of age.
Witnesses
of the will were John Keepers, brother of Joseph Hayes Keepers, and George
Washington Keepers, son of John.
Apparently
pursuant to the directive to purchase a farm, records show that Hannah and
William H. Keepers purchased through sheriff sale in 1844, 100 acres in
sections 10 and 11 of Township 4 (Monroe Township) range 2 for the sum od
$1,164. This farm lays immediately
north of the village of Birmingham, now called Milnersville. This change is recent [MERLE, 1973] and some
current maps retain the name Birmingham.
The
state of Ohio depopulated the entire Jefferson Township, 36 square miles, and
converted it to a lake and reforestation area, now called Salt Fork Lake. The Keepers farm lays within this area,
sections 2 and 9.
[MERLE]
Joseph
bought land in Beaver County, Pennsylvania subsequent to his father's death in
1827. On November 14, 1828, he bought
about two hundred acres in Beaver County, PA, from Thomas Russell for a sum of
$1200: ..."situate on Beaver dam
run in Little Beaver Township in the County of Beaver aforesaid, and Bounded as
follows. Beginning at the northwest
corner at a post and stones, thence by the warrant of Richard H. Morris, now
the land of Jesse Saviers and Thomas Sillyman, north eighty-eight and one-half
degrees east, two hundred and fifty-six perches to a post thence by the warrant
of John Hallowell, now the heirs of Zachariah Ragan, south one hundred and
thirty-three perches to a post thence by the residue of the larger tract of
which this is a part, south eighty-seven and one-half degrees west, two hundred
and fifty-five and seven-tenths perches to a post thence by land of John
Saviers, nrth one hundred one hundred (sic) and thirty-three perches to the
beginning. Containing Two Houndred
acres and allowances of six percent.
(Being part of a larger tract surveyed in pusuance of a warrant for four
hundred acres in the name of Thomas Sheilds and confirmed by the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania to John Field, William Cramond and James Gibson in trust for
the Pennsylvania Population Company by Patent dated the 26th day of August,
1806 ......with appurtenances..."
Signed by the Justice of the Peace, John Beer.
On
November14, 1828, Joseph also bought an adjoining 12 acres from Thomas and Sarah H. Astley of
Philadelphia, represented by Enoch Marvin, their attorney, conveyed to Thomas Russell that day, and
thence conveyed to Joseph Keepers. for the sum of $46. [Book 8, pp. 356-358]

John Mills3 Keepers (John M.2, William1)
was born January 29, 181414, and died May 08, 189615. He married Anna Hart July 16, 1837 in
Beaver Township, PA. She was born
October 05, 1818 in NY16, and died June 19, 1884 in Standish
Cemetery, Salem Twp., Meigs Co., OH.
Notes
for John Mills Keepers:
John
Mills Keepers filed a pension claim in 1890 based on the fact that his deceased
son, Allen, was a civil war veteran. In
support of his claim a copy of the family bible record was included. The birthdates of John Mills Keepers and
Anna Hart Keepers are listed along with the names and dates for eleven
children. A letter accompanying the
bible record states: "To whom it
may concern:- My grandparents' family
Bible, which my mother (Nancy Alvina Westfall) had was in the flood at Dayton,
Ohio, last March, and, it was in such a filthy condition that I copied the
family records and destroyed the Bible.
The birth dates here enclosed are exactly as they were in the family
Bible. I copied them from the Bible
myself. Yours resp., Eli Mills
Westfall"
John
Mills Keepers is shown as Mills Keepers in the 1979 edition of the Keepers
Family Genealogy. Based on the pension
record information, we believe they are the same person. Further, we suspect that he was named after
his father, and that the "M" stands for Mills in the John M. Keepers
born in 1792. Please note
Jennie
Keepers Wheeler's 1925 letter in which she refers to many of her relatives,
including her own father, by their middle names. She lists brothers Mifflin, Washington, Mills, and Hayes, in one family. Mills and Hayes in the 1979 edition have no information
concerning them. Mifflin is Lewis
Mifflin Keepers, and Washington is George Washington Keepers.
Also in
the household in the 1870 census, Columbia Twp., Meigs Co., OH, is listed:
Esther Luellen, age 20, born in OH, servant.

In a

Notes
for George Washington Keepers:
In the
1870 census, Salem Twp., Meigs Co., OH, value of real estate: $8900; value of
personal estate, $700. Also in the
household is Samuel Concle, age 23, born in West Virginia, farm laborer. Interestingly, the entire household (George,
Cyndrilla (sic), Satira (sic), and Sarah) is listed as also born in West Virginia. That birth state for the family appears to
be an error. [2005, JKK]

Notes
for Katherine Keepers:
See
vol. D, page 284 - marriage record - Guernsey Co., OH. The record reads Catharine Keepers and
Reason Huffman. The spelling Catharine,
rather than Katherine, is more likely correct given that her aunt's name was

William1) was born Abt. 1834 in Ohio49. She married Paul McCollum July 11,
1854 in Guernsey Co., OH50.
He was born Abt. 1828 in Ohio.
Notes
for Elizabeth (Betsy) Keepers:
Geography
was the main influence in assigning the marriage of Paul McCollum and Elizabeth
Keepers to this Elizabeth whose brothers were living in Guernsey Co., OH in
1850. The other known Elizabeths, in
Harrison Co., OH, would not have been the right age to have married in
1854. Further, see Merle's note for the
administration of the estate of Elizabeth's father by Paul M. McCollum.

John C.4 Keepers (John Mills3, John M.2,
William1) was born September 06, 1839 in Winchester, Guernsey Co.,
Ohio, and died April 13, 1917 in Kansas City, MO. He married (1) Georgia.
He married (2) Adeline58. He married (3) Mary Chase Abt.
1863. She was born 1843 in MO. He married (4) Julia A. Barnhouse
April 06, 1910. She was born 1856.
Notes
for John C. Keepers:
Listed
as "John, Jr." in the 1850 census, Salem Twp., Meigs Co., OH. He is shown born in Ohio, along with three
of his other siblings, in the 1850 census record.
In the
1870 census, Madison Twp., Highland Co., OH, is listed: John, age 40, wife
Mary, age 27, daughters Mary and Jennie, ages 6 and 4, and son John C., age
2. Because the first boy shown born to
this couple is named John C., I am assuming that this family belongs to John C.
Keepers who is known to have had 6 wives.
John's age and geography support this assumption.
The
1880 census, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH [T9, Roll 1023, Page 3], has John C.
Keepers, age 31 or 39, wife Georgia, age 22, son, W. B. (?), age 6, daughter,
Eliza (?), age 3. Both children were
born in Ohio. John's occupation appears
to be "coachman." This record
is difficult to read. This may be John
C. Keepers, known from the divorce action with Julia Barnhouse to have had 6
wives.
From
Dawn Taylor, March 15, 2009:
I
recently saw where John Keepers was in the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers
in Leavenworth, Kansas and died there in 1917 and is buried in their cemetery.
I have a hospital record and it lists his daughter Mrs. J.
O'Loughlin/O'Laughlin and son John C. Keepers.(jr). I found John sr. in the
1905 census in Wyandotte county Kansas, Argentine locality. He was listed as 65
with Adeline Keepers 76. I saw a J. Keepers and Co. in Missouri directories and
John O'Loughlin listed as working there in 1886-87. I have been interested in
how Samaria and John O'Loughlin met and
married. I saw all the info on Keepers and tombstone photos on the Meigs Co.
Ohio genweb.

Mary Jane4 Keepers (John Mills3, John M.2,

son of Sabert Ogden and Elizabeth Forrest.
He was born 1841, and died 192767.
Notes
for Mary Jane Keepers:
In the
1900 census, Columbia Twp., Meigs Co., OH, Mary indicates 2 children born and 1
living. Charles A. Ogden appears in the
same census, same place, but his birthday is Jan., 1871, while Charles A.,
Mary's son in the 1870 census, is 4 months old. Assuming the Charles A. Ogden in the census is Hugh and Mary's
son, it then implies that the daughter, Anna E., died before 1900.
