of Thomas Keepers
Group

Generation
No. 1
1.
THOMAS1 KEEPERS
was born Bef. 17651.
He married UNKNOWN.
Notes
for THOMAS KEEPERS:
The
1810 census, Greenville Co., SC [M252, Roll 62, Page 102], has Thomas, his
wife, and two daughters in the10-16 age group, and one slave. It is speculative at this time that Thomas
is the father of William. The exact
relationship between Thomas and William is unknown.
On
October 27, 1785, a Thomas Keepers and a William Keepers signed a petition to
form a new county in southern Virginia.
As pointed out by Emma Cronin, William Keepers of South Carolina, 1800
census, would probably not have been old enough to sign a petition in 1785. The relationship between Thomas &
William is unknown here also, but Thomas may have moved on to South
Carolina. [Ref.: "Petitions of Residents of Bedford and
Henry counties, Virginia, in favor of and opposed to a new county (Franklin),"
contributed by Mrs. Dorothy C. Watts, Albuquerque, NM, continued from vol. 24,
page 89 - text copied at the genealogy research section of the Library of
Congress.]

WILLIAM2 KEEPERS
(THOMAS1) was born Bet. 1774 - 17842. He married CATHERINE SIFFORD
February 1800 in North Carolina3. She was born Bet. 1774 - 1784.
Notes
for WILLIAM KEEPERS:
This family does not appear in the 1810 census in any state, when searched using HeritageQuestOnline.
Most of the information about William & Catherine (Sifford) Keepers and their children and grandchildren comes from Emma Cronin, g-g-g-granddaughter of William & Catherine. Emma has the William Wray/Catherine Keepers family bible and has researched Missouri and Texas records.
From Emma: I have linked my Catherine Keepers who married William Wray to William Keepers and Catherine Sifford for a couple of reasons. One is that they are all together in Cape Girardeau Mo. The other is that Catherine Sifford's brother Henry Sifford is also listed in the William Wray family bible.

ETHEL ELEANOR3 KEEPERS
(WILLIAM2, THOMAS1)5 was born Abt. 1803 in North Carolina6,
and died 1844 in Cape Girardeau Co., MO7. She married DANIEL LINK8
December 21, 1819, son of JOHN
LINK and MARGARET FULBRIGHT. He was born 1795 in North Carolina, and died
March 31, 1850 in Cape Girardeau Co., MO.

Notes
for DANIEL LINK:
Link/Linck
- spelling varies in different sources.
The spelling here is that used in his will dated December 8, 1849, and
the will appears to be signed by him.
The
1840 census, Byrd Twp., Cape Girardeau Co., MO, shows 5 males under 20 years of
age and 5 females under 20 years of age, apart from Daniel, 40-50 age group,
and Ethel Eleanor, 30-40 age group.
Only 4 daughters and 2 sons are named in Daniel Link's will, dated
December 8, 1849: Catherine, "my third daughter," Elinor, Elizabeth,
and Mary; John and Lafayette. It seems
probable that the other living children are not named in the will because they
were old enough to have been married and had already received their inheritance. Daniel's wife is not mentioned in his will,
and she is presumed to have died by then.
The executor of Daniel's will was John Proffer, his son-in-law.
Note: In the 1850 census, Cape Girardeau Co., MO,
Aaron Linck (sic), age 24, is shown in the household of John and (Nancy) Maria
(Link) Proffer. This suggests that
Aaron, born about 1826, was another of the sons of Daniel & Ethel Eleanor
and a brother to Maria Proffer. For
this reason, I have included him in the list of children.

x. LAFAYETTE LINK, b. Abt.
1838, Missouri16; m. REBECCA; b. 1837, Virginia17.
Notes for LAFAYETTE LINK:
The assignment of the information in the 1860 census,
Missouri Twp., Boone Co., MO, to this Lafayette Link is based on age - he
apparently would have to have been underage when his father died in 1850 - and
he is the only Lafayette Link found by HeritageQuestOnline (other than the one
noted below). However, there are so
many errors in census records that this assignment must remain speculative
until further verification.
One other Lafayette Link was found in the census
records: 1870, Bellair Twp., Appanoose
Co., Iowa [M593, Roll 375, Page 355].
This Lafayette Link is 3 years old, born in Iowa, and living on the County
Poor Farm. No other Link's are listed
at the Poor Farm. If Lafayette is the
son of Lafayette & Rebecca, then something disastrous probably occurred to
the family between 1867 and 1870. The
Poor Farm was apparently run by Sargent & Maria Richardson.

From
Collage of Cape County, vol. 14, No.1, June 1994, page 2, published by Cape
Girardeau Genealogical Society:
Obituary,
dated January 15, 1918 - Jackson, Missouri - Mrs. Maria Proffer, oldest citizen
of Cape Girardeau County, passed away last Saturday at the home of one of her
sons near Burfordville, at the age of 96 years, 10 months, and 27 days. The funeral was held at the Gladish Cemetery
Monday.
One
sister, Mrs. Birch Allen, 76 years old, survives; also three sons, George,
William Frank and Amon Proffer, and four daughters, Mesdames Frank Oldham,
Robert Mabrey, Sample Howard and Henry Winters, all of whom but Mrs. Winters of
Oran, live in this county. In all there
are 170 living descendants scattered all over the Union.
By the
death of Mrs. Proffer this county has lost one of the most remarkable
characters, and a life has gone out which was devoted to deeds of
kindness. Her parents (Link) came to
this country from North Carolina in 1811.
The subject of this sketch was born on a farm adjoining the one on which
she died and has lived her entire life in the community. The first grave on the cemetery in which her
body now rests was that of her father.
It is
said of her that her husband, John Proffer, never had to spend any money for
groceries or clothing, as his wife made all that, and besides raised 11
children. She was considered an expert
accoucheur, and was present at the advent into this world of hundreds of citizens
of this county. Her husband became the
owner of a great deal of land in the western part of the county and was able to
give each of his children a farm at the time of their marriage. His wife gave each son a wedding suit made
by her own hands and each daughter a silk wedding dress.
Her own
marriage occurred on the 19th day of November, 1840, according to records in
the recorder's office, and the ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace
John L. Ray. John Proffer died about 15
years ago.
Despite
her great age, Mrs. Proffer's mind remained clear to the end. She was well read; was conversant with the
holy writ and could quote scripture at length.
She was a great believer in spiritualism and considered that the best
form of religion.
She
spoke intelligently of the time when this county was a wilderness and when
bands of Indians roamed past the farm where she passed her childhood. In speaking of her grandfather, she recalled
the fact that he started in his wagon to Charleston and Thebes one day and
never returned. Later, his wagon was
found and it is presumed that he was massacred by the Indians.

1872, Cape Girardeau Co., MO73.
Notes for DR. THOMAS C. ALLEN:
From "History of Southeast Missouri," by
Douglass, published by Lewis Co., Chicago, 1912, [at the State Historical
Society of Missouri, Columbia, MO], page 1149:
"The maternal great-grandfather of Dr. [Thomas C.] Allen was a member
of a Holland settlement in North Carolina, where the Linck family was founded
in the early colonial days. In that
state John Linck, grandfather of the Doctor, was born, the date of his nativity
having been 1795. As a young man he was
united in marriage to Miss Catherine Keepers, and in 1830 they set out on the
long and arduous overland trip to Missouri, locating in Cape Girardeau county,
where he became owner of an estate of fourteen hundred acres."
From the same book, page 1164: in the biography of Russell Lafayette Allen..."The mother
[Elizabeth Link] was a representative of the old North Carolina family of the
name of Link, and her father, Daniel Link, was born in 1795. He married Elenors (sic) Keepers, of what is
now Bollinger county, Missouri, and there he and his wife passed the residue of
their lives.

MARY4 LINK
(ETHEL ELEANOR3 KEEPERS, WILLIAM2, THOMAS1) was born January 1842 in Missouri74. She married HENRY B.
ALLEN 187374. He was born March 1854 in Illinois75.
Notes
for MARY LINK:
In the
1910 census, Kinder Twp., Cape Girardeau Co., MO, Mary lists North Carolina as
the birth state for both her parents.
No
Birch Allen, referenced in the obituary for (Nancy) Maria Proffer, was found in
census searches in Missouri; however, a Henry B. Allen, and wife Mary, have a
grandson named Byrche. This tentative
connection was used to infer that Mary Link married Henry B. Allen, B. for
Birch (?), and is the sister, Mrs. Birch Allen, referred to in Maria Proffer's
obituary. This hypothesis yet needs to
be checked with marriage records in Cape Girardeau Co., MO.
The
1870 census, Whitewater Twp., Cape Girardeau Co., MO, shows Mary Link in the
household of Ellen & Thomas Allen, both age 33. Mary is 27, implying a birth year of about 1843. If Ellen Allen is Mary's sister Eleanor,
then Eleanor would have a birth year of about 1837.

ALLEN:
In the

Slinkhard. This person is presumed to
be Henry B. Allen.
Also in
the household in 1880: Andrew Seloy (Selig?), age 14, born in MO, worked on the
farm.

ELIZABETH JANE4
WRAY (CATHERINE3 KEEPERS, WILLIAM2, THOMAS1) was born December 22, 1830 in Bloomfield, Stoddard Co.,
MO, and died December 31, 1910 in Amarillo, Potter Co., TX. She married EDWIN BALLARD
JINKINS.
He was born August 1819 in North Carolina, and died March 31, 1884 in
Jack Co., TX.
Notes
for ELIZABETH JANE WRAY:
Emma: Elizabeth Jane Wray Jinkins was known for
her medical skills. Although she had no
formal medical training she served as a "doctor" to families in the
areas in which she lived. In many of
these areas she was the only medical assistance around.
Also in
the household in the 1900 census: Josie
P. Jinkins, granddaughter (to Elizabeth), born May 1892, in Texas.

About ELIZABETH JANE WRAY:

Notes
for EDWIN BALLARD JINKINS:
Also on
the same census page in 1850, Castor Twp., Stoddard Co., MO: William Jinkins, age 30, and family, and
Thomas Jinkins, age 83, and family.
According to the census, Thomas and William were born in North
Carolina. This strongly suggests that
these three families were related.
Edwin
B. Jinkins is listed at age 26 in the 1850 census. William and "Edward" show up in the 1860 and 1870
censuses under the name Jenkins.
Also in
the household in the 1860 census: Sarah
R. Rea, age 17, born in Missouri.
Full
names and birth dates for this family were provided by Emma Cronin.
Also in
the household in the 1870 census: James

Notes for MARTHA RAY:
Note: Martha is
not listed in the household in the 1880 census, Walker Twp., Franklin Co.,
AR. She would have been 12 years
old. Emma has an Ellen Martha Wray,
born about 1868. If Ellen M. Wray in
the 1880 census is the same as Martha born about 1868, then the census taker
recorded her age incorrectly in the 1880 census - perhaps the enumerator was
given false data. Until this is
resolved, I will show two separate children.

Notes
for SARAH REBECCA WRAY:
From
Emma: In the 1880 census of Franklin Co., Arkansas

December 30, 1849, and died January 20, 1913.
Notes
for WILLIAM K.
PROFFER:
William's
middle initial in the 1870 census appears to be an F or a T. Also in the household in the 1870
census: Margaret Winters, age 20, born
in Missouri, and helping around the house.
Margaret may have been a daughter of William's brother-in-law, A. Henry
Winters, from a former marriage. Note
that A. Henry Winters was born in 1829, and his wife, Mary E. Proffer, was born
in 1850.
Also in

Notes for S. CURTIS PROFFER:
In the 1880 census this child appears to be a daughter of

Notes
for MARTHA E.:
It is
probable that Martha died about 1890, or so, since George appears in the 1900
census married 4 years to another wife.
Of course, there may have been a divorce, but it seems doubtful given
the number of children born to George & Martha. It is also true that the wife in the 1900 census may be a third
marriage, but again, this is doubtful given the ages of the children in the
household in 1900. All the children,
except Ella, are in the household in 1900.
Notes
for SHAHLE:
Shahle
