Marriage Records, 1340-1980, Yates Publications Archive, have a Susannah
Keepars (sic), born 1799, married to Amos Merrill Edgerley, born 1788 in
CT. Marriage date: 1816 in Ohio. This may be the Susan listed here. The Bedford Historical Society, Bedford, PA, has a book:
Lineages, vol. 3, 1992: under the Lybarger Family, page 58, there is a marriage
cited between Susannah Keepers and Amos Edgerley; the latter may have died in
1894 in Licking Co., OH. No dates for
the marriage are given.
In the
1860 census, Jersey Twp., Licking Co., OH, [M653, Roll 999, Page 374], an Amos
Edgerley, age 73, born in CT, is in the same household with Bedford Edgerley,
age 44, born in OH. It seems probable
that Bedford is a son of Amos. Bedford
is listed as Bradford in the 1870 census, same place. There are Edgerley families in the 1860 and 1870 censuses in
Jersey Twp., Licking Co., OH - these may be descendants of Amos and Susannah.

widow's civil war pension claim, Amos was not born until 1841. This suggests that we do not have a full
accounting of the children in the family of Joseph & Sarah.

Amos C.4 Keepers (Joseph3, Thomas2,
Unknown1) was born March 09, 1841 in Sparta, Sussex Co., NJ49,
and died December 21, 1909 in Wantage, NJ.
He married Caroline E. Shrekagast October 25, 1866 in
Tranquility, NJ. She was born January
14, 1846 in Tranquility, Sussex Co., NJ50.
Notes
for Amos C. Keepers:
Notes
from Amos Keepers' Civil War file at the National Archives:
Amos
was mustered into the Union army on January 4, 1864, served under Captain James
Walker, and discharged March 27, 1864; 83 days total. The discharge was not service related, and was noted simply as
"discharged for a physical disability." He is described as 23 years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. tall with gray
eyes. He was eventually pensioned for chronic diarrhea.
Amos
died in 1909. In her pension
application, Carrie states that they were married by Rev. William C. McGee at
Tranquility, NJ. She stated that at the
time of their marriage, Amos was 5 ft. 11 in. tall, light complexion, blue eyed
with light hair, and his occupation was: farmer. Her initial pension was $12 per month starting March 4, 1911,and
she was entitled to $20 per month starting September 4, 1916. It seems that she requested an increase in
her widow's pension about 1928. Two
letters in support of her claim were filed.
One, dated Sep. 4, 1928, from Miss Belle Keepers, Unionville, NY, her
daughter, and another, dated Sep. 29, 1928, from her grandson, William A.
Keepers, 3715 Amboy Rd., Great Kills, S.I. (Staten Island). Carrie's 1928 request was denied. A third letter in the file, in support of
the original application, is from Elizabeth (Abram) Boss, a cousin of
Amos. Elizabeth states that Henry
Hammell was her father (Amos' uncle) and that Amos was raised by her
father. Further, there is a sister of
Amos who had a house in Huntsville, NJ.
Amos
died at 6:00 p.m., December 21, 1909, attended by Dr. Massey. The death certificate quoted the chief cause
of death as valvular heart disease, and a contributory cause as acute
indigestion.
Amos'
father died about 1850. The fact that
Amos was raised by his Uncle Henry (Hammell) suggests that Amos' mother, Sarah,
probably died when Amos was a young child.

living. Sylvester, Belle, and Iva are
listed in the 1910 census. Daniel and
Susie are not listed in the household in 1910. (The only Daniel Keepers that HeritageQuestOnline returns for
