Group 14: Kentucky
See
group 8, Frederick County, MD, for details about Joseph's siblings and
antecedents.
Generation No. 1
1.
Joseph2 Keepers
(Isaac1)1 was born 1795 in Maryland, and
died September 06, 1864 in Frankford, Indiana.
He married Rachel Robbins April 1822 in Newcastle, Henry County,
Kentucky. She was born 1806 in North
Carolina, and died Aft. 1880.
Notes
for Joseph Keepers:
From
the book: Arnold Livers Family of America, by Sister Mary Louise Donnelly: page 67, under children of Hellen Livers and
Isaac Keepers is listed " 160) Joseph Keepers, single, moved to
Indiana." [Henry]
Rachel
Robbins Keepers filed a widow's claim for pension on Oct. 1, 1878 in Marion
County, Indiana.
It is
stated therein that she is the widow of Joseph Keepers, Private in the Maryland
Troops. Her husband enlisted in
Baltimore "just before the Battle of Bladenburg, MD," 1812 and
continued in actual service in said war "till done of war." His service terminated in
"1815(?)" (sic). She states
that a full description of her husband at the time of his enlistment, viz:
"about 5 feet, ten inches, dark hair, blue eyes, light complexion,... born
about 1796." Further, she was
married to Joseph Keepers at Newcastle, Henry County, Kentucky, by Rev.
Strother, a Baptist minister in April 1822.
"..neither the claimant nor her husband had either been previously
married." She gives Sept. 6, 1864,
Frankford, IN, as the date and place of Joseph Keepers' death. Further declared that "Baltimore was
his residence until about 1820 when he came to Scott County, Ind., where he has
lived with the claimant until his death, and claimant has since lived mostly in
Scott Co., Ind." She further
declares that she has "heretofore made no application for pension, but her
husband received a Land (Bounty) Warrant for his said services." Witnesses were William H. English, age 56
yrs., residing at 60 Circle St. in Indianapolis, and Elijah S. Allen, age 69
yrs., residing in Scott Co., IN, who had known the claimant for 50 years.
Notes
made from Joseph Keepers' military record at the National Archives have that
Joseph Keepers was drafted at Frederick County, MD on July 1, 1814 for 6 months. Expiration of service was Oct. 13,
1814. He obtained bounty land under the
land act of September 28, 1850. (Still
looking for the bounty land.)

Generation No. 2
2.
John3 Keepers (Joseph2, Isaac1)
was born 1823 in Indiana. He married Irene
Hawkins August 21, 1845 in Scott, IN4. She was born June 1828 in Kentucky5.
Notes
for John Keepers:
That
Joseph & Rachel Keepers (Scott Co., Ind., 1860 census) are the parents of
this John Keepers is inferred from the known marriage of Joseph & Rachel in
1822 and that Joseph & Rachel are the only known Keepers in Indiana at that
time. John has Indiana listed as his
birthplace in the 1860 census. At this
time the parentage of this John Keepers has not been firmly established beyond
the inference above.
The
1840 census, Scott Co., IN, supports the hypothesis that John is the son of
Joseph & Rachel. The census shows a
male in the15-20 age group and a female in the10-15 age group. The only other possible Keepers family in
Indiana in 1840, according to the census records, is George Keeper(no s) in
Posey County. The George Keeper family
in 1840 had George and wife in the 20-30 age group and a son and daughter, both
in the under 5 category. There may yet
prove to be a Keepers connection for George & family, but the son is not
old enough to be John Keepers.
The
1880 census, Indianapolis, IN, shows John Keepers residing in the household of
his married daughter Rachel (Reiger).
John's father's birthplace is listed as PA, which, if correct, implies
that this John Keepers belongs, perhaps, to group 10. We note his mother is listed as born in Kentucky, not North
Carolina (the birth state for Rachel Robbins).
Further work needs to be done to establish the parentage of this John
K.
In the
1850 census, Scott Co., IN, John and Irena are listed as "persons over 20
y'rs of age who cannot read & write."

for Elvira F. Markwell:
Elvira
is listed as an adopted daughter of John P. Carr in the 1880 census, Vienna,
Scott Co., IN. It is possible that
Elizabeth (Keepers) Carr was previously married to a Markwell.
4.
Sarah3 Keepers (Joseph2, Isaac1)
was born Abt. 1830 in Indiana. She
married Milton Fields September 04, 1845 in Scott, IN. He was born in Indiana.
Notes
for Sarah Keepers:
In
an email from Nedra Frodge, Jan. 15, 2005: .... Now for Sarah, she seems
to have been born c. 1830-32?? and have married Milton Fields in Scott Co.
9-4-1845. In the 1850 census (Sarah is
20) they were living in Scott Co with children James Mc (4), Jonathan K. (3)
and Angeline N. (8/12). Next door were
John and Irene/Irena Keepers and their two children, Simpson (5) and Mary E.
(6/12). In 1860 (Sarah is 28 here) they
were still in Scott Co with James (14), John (12), and Rachel (8). In the 1880
census, she (now 43) and her husband and their 18-year old daughter, Melvina,
are living in Marion Co, too. -[Nedra]
In the
1850 census, Scott Co., IN, Sarah is listed as "a person over 20 y'rs of

5.
Penuell McClure3 Keepers (Joseph2, Isaac1)18
was born 1845 in Indiana, and died July 01, 191119. He married Melvina Clark January 25,
1864 in Madison, Jefferson Co., Indiana.
Notes
for Penuell McClure Keepers:
There are numerous spelling variations on the name of Penuell M. Keepers. His service record alone includes: Penull, Pennel, Pennuel, Pennell, Pennuell, and Pennell. An affidavit for his disability claim has Penual on the cover sheet. The 1860 census, Scott Co., IN, has Pennuel.
A note from Becky Donally: Also, I have a little insight into the name of Penuel Keepers. At an informal church dinner, several of us with interest in genealogy were discussing unusual names found in our families. I mentioned Penuel and several people mentioned that it sounded familiar and thought it was found in the Bible. A web search discloses that it is indeed from Hebrew and means "face of God" or "to face God" and is mentioned as a place east of the Jordan River. [Feb. 18, 2006]
"Penuell"
is used in this genealogy because it appears on his pension claim in his own
hand.

Pension
claim:
An affidavit in support of the "Original
Invalid Pension Claim" of Penuell M. Keepers was filed on October 18,
1898, in Scott Co., Ind., by John Brinton, age 59 yrs., whose Post Office
address is Blocher, Scott Co., Ind., and a Private in Co. C, 38 Regiment of
Ind. Volunteers. John Brinton states
that Penuell M. Keepers, while in the line of duty, near "Kenasau
Mountain" in Georgia on or about June 21 or 22, 1864, became disabled in
the following manner, viz.: "By lying in the entrencements or diches he contracted
rheumatism it seamed to be general all over the system in his knees and back
and shoulders and I further state that I was with said claiment from Atlanta to
the sea and on acct of him not being able to walk was detailed as company
forager and provided with a mule so he could ride. I was with the claiment and was with the command all the
time." Witnessed by Marshall E.
Lloyd and Otto Jo Blocher. Notarized by
Jesse E. Blocher.
There
were also affadavits from Mr. Columba and Mr. Hennessy, Kingfisher County, OK,
who had known Penuell M. Keepers as a neighbor since the opening of Oklahoma.
In the
pension claim, Penuell signs as Penuell M. Keepers. He indicates marriage to Melvina Clark on Jan. 1, 1865,
officiated by Rev. J. K. Pye. Living
children with birth dates: Charles E.
Keepers, Nov. 12, 1864, John S. Keepers, Oct. 22, 1866, and Mary R. Yount, May
5, 1871. In the claim Penuell
"alleges that about January 10, 1863, at Murfreesboro, Tenn., while
guarding a wagon train from Murfreesboro to Nashville, Tenn., his left foot was
crushed by a wagon running over it." "Since leaving service has
resided in Butler County, Kansas, as a farmer, but was a
schoolteacher." He also declared
himself .."free from all kinds of vicious habits." The pension claim appears to have been
initiated in 1885.
Surgeon's
report, Nov. 23, 1885: 41 yrs., 5'
7", light complexion.
Surgeon's
report, Feb. 1, 1899: 5' 6 1/2", 162 lbs., age 54 yrs., blue eyes.
Surgeon's
report, Feb. 14, 1906: 5' 6 3/4", 62 yrs., 155 lbs, occupation - teacher.
Penuell
M. Keepers' address on Jan. 5, 1906 was 510 W. 21st Street, Anderson, Ind.
Medical
services claim:
After
the death of Penuell in 1911, Mrs. Mary A. Stowe, Franklin, Ind., made claim
for medical services "for my father, Penuell M. Keepers." She states that Penuell had
"rheumatism, disease of the heart and stomach, injury to his left
clavicle, and an injury to his left foot that occurred at the Battle of Stony
River on January 10, 1863."Nursing and care had been provided by Dr. Dobyns. In the funeral director's bill, the only
instance of Penuell's middle name is given: McClure. - [JKK]
An
interesting note regarding Penuell's middle name: "By the way, there was a Dr. McClure in Scott Co in the 1850
census. I suspect Pennuel's middle name
is a reference to the doctor who may have helped with the delivery. I find that particularly interesting since
approximately 100 years later a Dr. McClure delivered me. - [Nedra]"

died July 1913.
18 iii. Mary Keepers, born May 05, 187121. She married (1) --- Yount. She married (2) --- Stowe.
Notes
for Mary Keepers:
In his
claim for a pension, about 1898, Pennuel M. Keepers lists Mary R. Yount as one
of three living children. Upon the
death of Pennuel, about 1911, a Mrs. Mary A. Stowe of Franklin, Indiana,
requested money to cover expenses for medical services for her father,
"Pennell M. Keepers. " Money was to go to Dr. Dobyns for nursing and
care. The funeral director's bill
listed Penell McClure Keepers.
Apparently,
Mrs. Mary A. Stowe is the same person as Mary R. Yount. Perhaps this genealogist mistook an A for an
R. - [JKK]
In an
email from Nedra Frodge, Jan. 15, 2005:
In the 1880 census, Rachell Robbins (daughter of Joseph Robbins and, I
believe, Elizabeth Robbins) was living with her daughter and son-in-law, John
and Elizabeth Carr (married 5-14-1848) in Scott Co, Indiana. I believe I have some information that ties
her to John and Irene who were married in Scott Co on 8-21-1845 (in Marion Co,
Indiana for the 1880 census) as well--I think the 1870 census has Rachel living
with them--I will look for that when I get a chance. Pennal (the spellings in
this census) was also in Johnson Co, Indiana with Melvena (his wife), Charles,
Stanley and Molley. When my grandfather
gave me the information on the family history, and his information has proven
accurate, he named three children--his father Charles, John Stanley and
Molly. I think Molly is a nickname for
Mary and that they are one in the same. - [Nedra]

Florina H.3 Keepers (Joseph2, Isaac1)
was born 1846. She married Albert J.
Fulkerson March 06, 1864.

In an

Flora Keepers married Albert J. Fulkerson in Scott Co on March 6,
1864. One child was born to them--Lilly
M. On June 12, 1866, Fulkerson married
for a second time. The information
comes from a book on (Clay City and Harrison Township) Biographical Sketches of
Clay Co, IN. At the time it was
written, it was noted that Lilly M. was deceased. I have assumed that Flora died in childbirth or shortly
thereafter but have no real evidence of that having occurred. - [Nedra]
