of James Keepers
Generation
No. 1
1.
James1 Keepers was born March 06, 17781,
and died Abt. August 1847 in Jefferson Co., MO2. He married Mary Elder April 25, 1806
in Frederick Co., MD3,4, daughter of Aloysius Elder and
Elizabeth Mills. She was born October
11, 1789 in Maryland5.
Notes
for James Keepers:
See
group 8, Frederick Co., MD, for details about siblings and antecedents for
James keepers.
Note: Data regarding full names, birthdates,
marriages, some spouses, etc., for James and Mary (Elder) Keepers, their
children, and descendants of Lucretia Keepers Williams were provided by Theresa
Guempel.
From
Theresa: According to notes of family
stories written down by my grandfather, Paul A Immer: The Keepers family came to Missouri in 1818 from Maryland. The present site of Georgetown University
was part of their farm they left. They
settled in Florissant, MO where Lucretia Keepers was born. In 1834 they moved to "the old
farm" on the Big River and made that home until they died. [To date, I have been unable to verify the
Georgetown reference. - JKK]
In
Western Maryland Genealogy, p. 182, Frederick County indentures:
"Barney Riley of Adams Co., Pa., binds
his son John Riley , for 3y 6m to James Keepers of Frederick Co. [MD],
joiner, to 20 May 1813."
signed
on "23 April 1810 by Barnabas Rielly and James Keepers
(169-70)."
James
was the executor named in his sister's (Eleanor Keepers Knouff) will
(1816). In fulfilling his duties as
executor, he sold his sister's farm: 60
acres, 3 miles from Emmitsburg, MD, and 1 mile from the seminary with good log
dwelling. A notice to sell was
published in The Frederick-Town Herald, March, 1817.
In the
1830 census, St. Louis, MO, the James Keepers
household includes his wife (40-50 age group), 1 male, 10-15, 1 male
15-20, 1 female, under 5, 2 females 5-10, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female
20-30.
In the
1840 census, Meramec Twp., Jefferson Co., MO, the household includes James
(60-70), Mary his wife (50-60), 1 male under 5, 1 female (5-10), 1 female
(10-15), and 2 females (15-20). The
name of the male under 5 yrs. is unknown at this time. [July 26, 2005]
James
died intestate, and his wife, Mary, administered the estate. In the inventory of goods, filed Sept. 29,
1847, is a note that the inventory of money, books and papers was taken Sept.
8, 1847, by the Administratrix "in the presence & by the help of Adam
Harneys & G. W. Freeman." The
approximate date of James' death is based on the information in the probate
record.
From
David Helm, email dated 9/8/2008: There is an interesting reference to James
Keepers in the Richard Graham papers, located at Missouri State Historical
Society in Jefferson Memorial in St. Louis.
An account with Graham beginning on October 6, 1823 showed Keepers owed him
$113.67 This debt was repaid by
working 91 days at $1 per day for Mr. Graham and selling him 10 pairs of
shutters (presumably made by James Keepers in his shop) for $5 a pair. The
total exceeded the amount due Graham, so the $27.82 due James Keepers was paid
him in cash. A statement that he was
paid in full, dated 27 Aug 1824, was signed by James Keepers in a legible, firm
hand.
Also,
from David Helm: The older daughters
were all married in the Catholic Church and the records show them to be daughters
of James Keepers and Mary Elder. The younger girls, where exact birth dates are
given, are from the Florrisant, MO Catholic Church records, which were kept in
French. I viewed these on microfilm at
Jefferson Memorial about 1970.

Notes
for Mary Elder:
1798
Fred. Co. Assessment: Houses and Lots in Emmitsburg, MD, p. 80, shows a James
Elder with 3/4 lot. This would be a
brother or the father, possibly, of Mary.
In the
1850 census, Jefferson Co., MO, besides Mary and a child, Delphina Keepers, age
4, is Benjamin Williams, age 26, born in MO, a farmer, and his wife, Lucretia,
age 18. I assume that Benjamin's wife
is Mary's daughter Elizabeth Lucretia.
Presumably, Benjamin was working Mary's farm. NOTE: It is probable
that Delphina is Mary's grandchild.
There is a cryptic reference to "a minor child" Delphina
Keepers in the Jefferson Co., MO, probate records, located at the Jefferson College
Library. Unfortunately, the folder for
Delphina, #749-013, is empty. Whatever
record was contained therein was either misplaced or lost.
In the
1860 census, Meramec Twp., Jefferson Co., MO, Mary is not listed (nor the
son-in-law, Benjamin) although Delphina, age 14, is in Lucretia's household.
It is possible that Mary died between 1850 and 1860.
From
Theresa Guempel: According to notes of
family stories written down by my grandfather, Paul A Immer: Paul
found a typed page reading, "Grandma Keepers was an Elder. Bishop Elder was a relative. Grandma Keepers was a devout Catholic, and a
zealous worker for the faith. Mass was
celebrated once a month in the homes of the faithful. In that community at the home of Grandma Keepers." He thought that "Grandma Keepers"
must be Mary Elder Keepers. The
grandchild that wrote this could be Loretta Williams Walthen.
From
David Helm: David sent his list of
James & Mary (Elder) Keepers' children.
Some dates are different in the two lists. The dates used in our records follow David Helm's list. David's List: Children of James Keepers and
Mary Elder, married 25 Apr 1806 in Frederick County, Maryland:
1. Elizabeth Veronica Keepers, born 25 Aug 1809
in Maryland. She
married Israel Foote Hale on 11 Nov
1828. The marriage was performed by
Father Quickenborne and recorded in the Florissant, MO St. Ferdinand Catholic
Church records. Her birth date is from
the Hale family Bible page.
Hale

couple. Veronica Keepers Hale died 10
Sept 1895 in Randolph County, MO and is buried in Bagby Cemetery near
Huntsville, MO.

9 and Mary V., age 7.
5. Lewis Keepers was born in Maryland about 1817. He married Paralee

County, TX about 1853, where their 12 children grew up. Lewis Keepers died there in January 1877.
6. Catharine Keepers was born about 1818,
presumably in Maryland, as
her birth is not noted in the St.
Ferdinand Catholic Church records of Florissant, MO, where the Keepers family
had settled at least by 1819. Her
death
on 18 July 1819 is recorded in the records of that parish.
7. Mary Catharine Keepers was born 16 Aug 1820
and was baptized at
St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in
Florissant, MO. She married William
Harrison
Piles on 30 Aug 1837 in Jefferson County, MO.
Later she married

to
Lawrence O'Brien on 3 June 1841 at Basillica of St. Louis the King in
St. Louis,
MO identifies her as daughter of James Keepers and Mary Elder.
The
O'Briens had 9 children, and Angeline O'Brien died 24 Nov 1889 in
Kansas
City, MO.
10.
Mary Rebecca Keepers was born 16 Sept 1826 and baptized 27 Oct
1826 at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in
Florissant, MO. The godmother was a
Daphne Keepers, possibly her older
sister Delphine.
Mary
Rebecca Keepers married Andrew Jackson Medley in Jefferson County, MO on 27
July 1848.
11. James Francis Keepers was born 13 Feb 1829
and baptized Mar 1829
at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in
Florissant, MO. The godfather was
Thomas
Elder and the godmother was Veronica [Keepers] Hail [Hale] older sister of the
baby. James Francis died 28 Aug 1829
and is buried in the
St.
Ferdinand Cemetery at Florissant, MO.
12. Lucretia Elizabeth Keepers was born Mar 2 or
Apr 2 in 1831, and was
baptized at St. Ferdinand Catholic
Church in Florissant on 2 Sept 1832.
She
married Benjamin Williams on 2 Feb 1850 at Jefferson County, MO, and her widowed
mother Mary Keepers is shown iving with this youngest daughter and son-in-law
in the 1850 census there.

Yoakum, Texas.
Notes
for Lewis Hignos Keepers:
In the
1850 census, Jefferson Co., MO, there is also listed in the household: Martha
New, age 19, born in Tennessee.
In the
1870 census, Bastrop, TX, Roll 1574, Page 536, taken July 27, 1870, some of the
ages, names and gender, of the children in this family are at variance with the
1860 census. Those listed include: William 28, George 20 (should be 23-24),
Frank 18 (should be 21-22), James 16 (should be 19-20), Albertin 14 - female
(?), Dock 15 - a male (should be Martha Ellen), Amalie 12 (should be Mary
Elizabeth), and Susanna 2 (we have as Frances Rosella). Thomas is not listed. Edward's age matches
in the two censuses. Joseph does not
appear on Roll 1574, Page 536. It may
be that relatives were visiting at the time of the census. Perhaps the census taker was a Yankee??
Another
1870 census, Bastrop, TX, Roll 1574, Page 482, taken July 4, 1870, lists:
William 28, Joseph, 27, Frank 21, James 19, Albert 16, Matthew 15, Amalie (sp?)
12, Chas. 10, Eddy 8, and Thomas 5. Is
Matthew a.k.a. Dock? Is this child a

for Rebecca Keepers:
Andrew,
Rebecca, and their daughter, Mary E., appear in the household of Joseph and
Harriet Medley, according to the 1850 census, Jefferson Co., MO. If Rebecca was really born in Alabama, as
indicated in the 1850 census, then James and Mary took a detour while moving

About Joseph Keepers and Rosella Shoults:
Marriage:
February 21, 1863, Fayette County, Texas
Notes
for Mary A. Stewart:
In her
application for a widow's pension, Mary states her marriage to Joseph Henry
Keepers on May 13, 1868, in St. Martins Parish, Louisiana. However, she also indicates that she had
been a resident of Texas continuously since 1873. So, it appears that Joseph and Mary may have lived in Louisiana
from 1868 to 1873. Also, note that the
gap in her children's births from son Louis in 1869 to daughter Lillie in 1877 suggests
that there may be other children born to Joseph and Mary in those intervening
years. Since their heritage is
Catholic, we can hope that there are some records in some Louisiana parish that
await discovery.
