Descendants of John Keepers

Generation No. 1

     1.  John1 Keepers1,2 was born Bet. 1755 - 17653,4, and died 1811 in Connellsville, PA.  He married (1) Sarah Fish.  She was born Bef. 17755.  He married (2) Susanna Kutz, daughter of Thomas Kutz.

Notes for John Keepers:

In the text of John's will, dated November 5, 1811 and probated December 20, 1811, both Sarahs are referred to as "Sally" - I assume Sally is a nickname for Sarah, or there is another marriage to be accounted for, or else the record of their first names is incorrect.  I believe their given names were Sarah (mother and daughter).

John Keepers was one of the early founders of Connellsville, PA, and he is listed as one of thirty-two "Names of the voters of the borough of Connellsville, April 7, 1806." On Feb. 2, 1808, the Council approved the "List of Taxes for the Borough of Connellsville for the Year ending the first Monday in April, 1808."  The list has John Keepers taxed a modest $1.25.  (History of Fayette County, PA, by Franklin Ellis, 1882, p. 370, p. 374)

More About John Keepers:

Residence 1: originally from Carlisle, PA

Residence 2: owned property & lived in Connellsville, PA

Notes for Sarah Fish:

The 1820 census, Fayette County, Connellsville, PA, shows the widow Sarah Keepers with 5 children in the household: 3 males 16-18, and 2 females 10-16.  Sarah's age is > 45.

Children of John Keepers and Sarah Fish are:

+   2         i.   Alexander Thomas2 Keepers, born 1793 in Pennsylvania.

+   3        ii.   Joseph Keepers, born October 06, 1795 in Connellsville, PA; died October 16, 1830.

+   4       iii.   John Keepers, born 1801.

+   5        iv.   Samuel Keepers, born 1802; died September 26, 1829 in Connellsville, PA.

     6         v.   William Keepers, born 1803 in Pennsylvania6,7.

Notes for William Keepers:

In the 1860 census, Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA, William's age is given as 57.  No occupation is given, but he is living in the household of George White, age 57, manufacturer of castings.  George (wife: Sarah, age 52) White had two sons listed (ages 20 & 17); also listed: William White, 14, Elisah Phillips (male), 18, and Rebecca Atkinson, 12.    In the 1870 census, Connellsville, PA, William, age 67, has no occupation and is living with his sister, Sarah White. No other persons are listed in the household in 1870.

In the 1850 census, Connellsville, PA, William is apparently living in an inn kept by Samuel Page. Others living at the inn:  Isaac Mindon, 32, clerk, David M. Whaley, 26, druggist, John A. Cummings, 30, military, and Clarisa Jones, 25, a black woman, all born in Pennsylvania.

+   10      ii.   Stephen Keepers, born April 1787; died March 16, 1834.

Generation No. 2

     2.  Alexander Thomas2 Keepers (John1)9 was born 1793 in Pennsylvania10.  He married Elizabeth Geyer May 04, 1819 in Frederick County, MD.

Notes for Alexander Thomas Keepers:

In the 1820 census, Fred. Co., MD, the household of Alexander T. Keepers only lists two children, 1 male under 10 and 1 female under 10.  There is one other female, presumably Elizabeth, listed in the 16-26 age group.  She could easily be the female listed in the 20-30 age group in the 1830 census.

The 1830 census, PA lists Alexander T. Keepers in Connellsville, Fayette County - listed in the household are:  2 males < 5 years, 1 male 5- 10, 1 male 10- 15, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 20-30.  The eldest male is Alexander, and the eldest female appears to be his wife Elizabeth (Geyer).  They apparently moved to Ohio from Connellsville sometime before 1840.

In the 1840 census, Gratis Twp., Preble County, OH, the Alexander Keepers household includes 2 males between 5 and 10 years old, 2 males between 10 and 15, 1 male between 15 and 20, Alexander, between 40 and 50 years old, 1 female under 5, 1 female between 10 and 15, and 1 female between 20 and 30.  The latter female cannot be Elizabeth, since they were married in 1819.

I located an Alexander T. Keepers in 1850 Census, Springfield, Fayette

Co., PA; age 57; est. birth 1792; microfilm roll: M432-780, page 464, living with a David Keffers/Keppers.

Yours, Nancy Crowell, Librarian, Preble County Public Library  [Oct. 16, 2004]  --  Perhaps  "David Keffers/Keppers"  is really David Keepers, son of John & Ann (Rubincamp) Keepers, group 1.

Joseph, Alexander, Sarah, and Samuel Keepers all appear in "A list of taxables in Connellsville Township (including the borough) in 1823, the year in which the township was set off from Bullskin," page 400 of History of Fayette Co., PA, Vol. 1, 1882, by Franklin Ellis.

Note:  There is a J. T. Keepers in two 1870 censuses: first - Gold Hill, Storey Co., Nevada, alone, age 39, carpenter, census taken July 1, 1870;  second census - 1st ward, Sacramento, Sacramento Co., CA, married, age 38, builder (?), wife Caroline, age 36 born in MD, son Tom, 14, born in TN, census taken July 14, 1870.  Both J. T.'s are born in PA.  Also in the Sacramento household: S. V. Morris, age 35, a newsman born in OH, and Naoma Rallyers/Rauyers (?), age 68, born in TN.  I believe that these two citations are the same person, J. T. Keepers, and that he is one of the five sons referred to in the 1830 & 1840 censuses above.  It is possible that he is from another family as yet unknown to this genealogist.  It is also possible that the citations refer to two distinct persons.  The name, J. T. (maybe Joseph Thomas ?) ,and state/date of birth, about 1832 in PA, suggest placing him as a son of Alexander Thomas Keepers, but, there are some families in both MD and PA whose descendants, if any, are unknown.

Children of Alexander Keepers and Elizabeth Geyer are:

+   11       i.   William H.3 Keepers, born May 08, 1820 in Emmitsburg, MD; died February 22, 1898 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.

     12      ii.   Female Keepers, born Bet. 1810 - 1820.

+   14      iv.   John G. Keepers, born Abt. 1831 in Pennsylvania; died 1909 in Indiana.

     3.  Joseph2 Keepers (John1) was born October 06, 1795 in Connellsville, PA16, and died October 16, 1830.  He married Elizabeth Haven.  She was born February 11, 1798 in Connellsville, PA17,18, and died March 18, 1872.

Notes for Joseph Keepers:

From History of Dunbar, PA, and Vicinity, by William E. Crowe (WPA project) - located in the Uniontown, PA, library (The Pennsylvania Room):  "Hotels.  ....The next hotel was a three frame story building about where Mr. Smith's house now stands.  This was known as the Old Dunbar House.  ...The old Dunbar House was burned in 1893, ...The new Dunbar house was opened in 1897 by John McFarland. ..." [2-11-2004, JKK]

In the History of Fayette County, PA, located in the Uniontown Public Library genealogy room, on pages 370-371, a Thomas Keepers is listed as running a tavern in Connellsville at about the time the borough was incorporated.  The narrative on pp. 370-371 is based on the memory of "one the oldest citizens of Connellsville," Provance McCormick, Esq.  However, there is no Thomas Keepers that we have yet found in the federal census records in Pennsylvania from 1790 through 1860.  There is a Joseph Keepers listed in Fayette County, PA, in the 1820 census.  It is possible that his given name was Joseph Thomas Keepers (although it is simply Joseph in his father's will), and that he was referred to by his middle name - not uncommon. It is also possible that the Thomas reference is to Joseph's  brother, Alexander Thomas Keepers (who is listed Alexander Thomas in their father's will), born about 1794.  Alexander Thomas shows up in the 1820 census in Frederick, MD, in the 1830 census in Connellsville, PA, and in the 1840 census in Gratis Twp., Preble Co., OH.  Of course, Thomas may have simply moved into and out of Connellsville between 1820 and 1830.

Special Note:  In the History of Fayette County, PA, p. 396, the Town Council members are listed including: Joseph Keepers in 1823 & 1825, Thomas Keepers in 1826 & 1828, and Alexander T. Keepers in 1830.  This strongly suggests that there was a Thomas Keepers, tavern keeper, in Connellsville, from another Keepers family - not the John Keepers family.  It is possible that this Thomas is the Thomas listed in the 1810 census in South Carolina (see Group 17).  [We will work on resolving this issue.]

On June 30, 1817, the Council of the Borough of Connellsville granted permission to Joseph Keepers and George Sloan "to build a small building for a ferry-house on the public ground at or near the ferry."  A bridge, built about 1800, had been swept away by a flood in 1816 or early in 1817.  "A memorandum is found showing that in the spring of that year [1817] a ferry was in operation, run by Joseph Keepers and George Sloan."  (History of Fayette County, PA, p. 376-377)

The 1820 census, Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co., PA, has in Joseph's household:  himself, age 18-26, a male in the 16-18 age group (possibly his younger brother William), a female, age less than 10, who must be Annie, and a female, age 16-18, who is possibly his wife Elizabeth with the age incorrectly recorded - she should have been about 22 in 1820.

The 1830 census, Dunbar, Fayette Co., PA, includes in Joseph's "household" 9 males between 20 and 30.  It seems clear that, since Joseph was running an hotel, that all the boarders are included in the census.  Unfortunately, we cannot sort out which persons in the census are part of Joseph's personal family.

Notes for Elizabeth Haven:

That this Elizabeth was Capt. Joseph Keepers' mother is inferred from the fact that burials at the Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Connellsville list Elizabeth at gravesite 317-M, along with the dates of birth and death given, and that Capt. Joseph Keepers is also assigned 317-M with "no stone."

Note that Capt. Joseph Keepers is buried in NJ.  [2-11-2004, JKK]

In the 1850 census, Connellsville Twp., Fayette Co., PA, Elizabeth, age 51 years, is listed with children Catharine, age 21 and Isaac, age 20.  In 1860 the census lists Elizabeth, age 60, with a child Elizabeth, age 8.  I presume the child to be a grandchild of Elizabeth.  Both records have them born in PA.  In 1860, Elizabeth's real estate value is $300 and personal estate, $100.

     4.  John2 Keepers (John1) was born 180123.  He married ?.  She was born Bet. 1800 - 181024.

Notes for John Keepers:

In the 1860 census, Emmitsburg, MD, John, Philomenia, and Elexus, are shown in the household of John and Micha Resler, ages 32 and 29, repsectively.  This suggests that Micha might be another daughter of John.  Further, she is listed as born in MD.  If true, these data indicate that John was probably in Maryland since about 1830, and possibly, earlier.

Also in the household in the 1840 census, 5th Elec. Dist., Frederick Co., MD: 1 female in the 50-60 age group.

Notes for Samuel Keepers:

In the Centennial History of Connellsville, 1806 - 1906, by J. C. McClenathan, M.D., et. al., p.194, Samuel is mentioned as a musician in a company of militia called the Youghiogheny Blues, organized August 17, 1823.   " ... The company wore blue uniforms, as its name implies, and carried flintlock muskets with immense bayonets.  The Blues always celebrated their anniversary by a parade on the 17th of August. ... A still greater day, in the history of the Blues, was Thursday, May 26, 1825.  It was the day of Lafayette's visit to Uniontown, when making his second tour of America."

     10.  Stephen2 Keepers (John1)41 was born April 1787, and died March 16, 183442.  He married Mary Ann Delancy November 07, 1809 in Carlisle, PA43.  She was born Abt. 1793 in Carlisle, PA, and died September 05, 185444,45.

Notes for Stephen Keepers:

The parentage of Stephen has not been definitely established at this time.  We know that John, the father listed here, was from Carlisle, and Stephen and Else (Crockett) Keepers, Group 4,  were not married until 1789.  Of course, it is possible that this Stephen is a son of Stephen of Carlisle by a previous marriage.  We hope to resolve the issue soon.

A March 18, 1834 newspaper article, Cumb. Co. Hist. Soc. archives, notes that Stephen died March 16, 1834, leaving eight (8) children.  Note:  at the time of his death, 3 of Stephen and Mary Ann's children had already died; if the newspaper article refers to living children, as might be expected, then Mary Ann may have given birth to at least 11 children.

Probable daughters of Stephen & Mary Ann (by virtue of geography) are:  Catharine Keepers - married to Charles Schwartz of Harrisburg, by Rev. George Cookman, according to the July 13, 1837 issue of the American Volunteer, Carlise, PA;  MaryAnn M. Keepers - married to George Bergner, "editor of the now defunct Der Democrat," by Rev. J. Ulrich, according to the November 29, 1838 issue of the Carlisle Herald; Ann Eliza Keepers - married to Lewis G. Swaine of Harrisburg by Rev. Sprole, according to the March 12, 1840 issue of the American Volunteer.

Another possible daughter: Miss Jane Allis M. Keepers married Wm. Getty of Pittsburg on August 12, 1847 - [Carlisle Herald]

The 1850 census, Carlisle, PA [M432, Roll 773, Page 359], has a Catharine Keepers, age 3, in the household of William Miller, 48, wife Mary, 45 and Malenda Miller, 18.  Mary Miller would have been born about 1815, which would fill in a gap in the known children of Stephen & Mary Ann, if Mary Miller was originally a Keepers.  If true, it seems that William Miller would have been a second husband for Mary - given that an 1837 marriage to George Bergner is on record.  This is quite speculative and needs further research for clarification.

Generation No. 3

     11.  William H.3 Keepers (Alexander Thomas2, John1) was born May 08, 1820 in Emmitsburg, MD54, and died February 22, 1898 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH55.  He married Eleanor Collins November 05, 1840 in Preble Co., OH56.  She was born 1818 in Maryland57.

Notes for William H. Keepers:

The probate record, Estate #46290, Hamilton Co., Courthouse, Cincinnati, OH, lists the names and addresses of William's living children:  Mrs. Jennie Baker, 1305 Walnut, Mrs. Martha R. Burgess, Hartwell, OH, Chas. C. Keepers, 431 Tusculum Ave., Samuel Keepers, 5031 Carlisle Ave.  Those with street addresses are presumably in Cincinnati.  The four children declined administration of the estate in favor of James J. Burgess (probably the son-in-law of William).

Also in the household in 1870, Jennie Dunham, age 31, "at home", born in Pennsylvania, and Luly Dunham, age 9, born in Ohio, attending school.  The age and birth state of this Jennie do not quite match the 1860 census data; however, this person does appear to be the daughter of William H. and Ellen.  If so, then Jennie was married at least twice.

Notes for Lucinda B. Skinner:

In the 1900 census, Los Angeles, CA, Lucinda stated that she had 6 children born to her and 2 were living.  On the marriage certificate (1895) to William A. Keepers, she lists her age as 37, one year younger than William A.  In the 1900 census, she stated that she was born in May, 1850, which would have made her seven years older than William A. Keepers.  In her widow's pension application, dated Sept. 23, 1916, she listed her birth year as 1844, the date used in this genealogy.

Charles A. Skeen, Undertaker & Embalmer, who handled Lucinda's funeral, was paid in full by Mrs. Chas. Lewis for a casket, $100, shipping box, $7, embalming, washing & dressing, $25, carriages, $13, and undertaker at Calfax & Pastor & opening grave, $4, for a total of $185.

     15.  Annie3 Keepers (Joseph2, John1) was born 1817 in Pennsylvania83.  She married John Robbins84.  He was born 1810 in Pennsylvania85.

Notes for John Robbins:

John's wife in the 1870 census, Connellsville, PA, is listed as Sarah, age 52, born in PA, and in the 1860 census, Sarah, age 42.  This is probably Annie since middle names were often used and we only have "Ann"  listed in the 1850 census for John's wife.   It is possible that Sarah is a second wife for John, in which case, some of the children listed here may belong to Sarah instead of Ann.

John is listed under John Robins (one "b") in the 1860 census, Connellsville, PA.

Notes for Mary Keepers:

The following is graciously provided by Elizabeth Enos.  "Mary Keepers Enos was born in 1820."  An obituary states:  "Connellsville, PA, Feb. 3. - Mrs. Mary Keepers Enos, aged 90, died today of congestion of the lungs.  Seven weeks ago she fell and fractured a hip.  Up to that time she had enjoyed good health and during her long life seldom was ill.  She was a daughter [should read grand-daughter] of Maj. John Keepers, proprietor of a hotel on the West Side for many years.  She married Jonathan Enos, who died over 30 years ago.  She was the mother of 12 children, three of whom survive, together with 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren."  This obituary appeared in 1911.

Notes for Jonathan Enos:

Came from Somerset Co., PA, in 1835 and located at Connellsville.  He was in the foundry and blacksmithing business until his death in 1878 (sic).

Elizabeth Enos has provided an obituary for Jonathan Enos that states he died on September 4, 1878, aged 64 years. The previous citation for Jonathan apparently has a typo giving his death on September 18, 1876.  The obituary states further: "The deceased was born in Somerset Co., PA, but removed to Connellsville when he was yet in his youth, where he resided until his death.  He was a blacksmith by trade and was highly respected on account of his honesty and integrity."

Notes for Joseph Keepers:

The 1860 census for Connellsville Boro., Fayette Co., PA,  lists Joseph (Keepers), age 38, blacksmith.   Wife, Elizabeth, age 34, and children in the household:  Joseph T., 16, Alice, 13, America, 11, Henry L., 7, William, 6, Isaac M., 2, all born in PA.  The 4 oldest children attended school within the last year.  The absence of Ira in the list suggests that he had died before 1860.

In the 1850 census, Connellsville Twp., Fayette Co., PA, has Alice, age 5, and Americus C., age 1.  Also, in the 1850 census, there is shown in the household, a blacksmith, George Parker, born in England.

Notes for Isaac M. Keepers:

On April 1, 1858, Isaac M. Keepers was deeded lots 4 and 5, block U, on Depot Street (now 106 depot St.) in Latrobe, PA, by Oliver Barnes.  On March 5, 1873, he acquired adjoining lots 1, 2, and 3 from Henry Ousler.  Lot 1 has disappeared through street widening and the City of Latrobe garage and equipment shed now stands on lots 2 and 3.  An old brick two story dwelling stands on 4 and 5, probably Isaac's former home and business place.  On November 11, 1882, he deeded all of the above property to William Anderson for the sum of $3,500. (Vol. 106, page 84).  Earlier, on July 9, 1856 he deeded a Latrobe residence property to William H. Barnes, lot 9, block Q, for $900.  The deed reported that Isaac M. Keepers had acquired the property April 1, 1854, but the earlier transaction was never recorded.

Various lawsuits in Westmoreland County in which Isaac M. Keepers was plaintiff appear in the litigation index between 1859 and 1895, but the court clerk refused examination due to embrittlement.  The records are expected to be microfilmed soon.  The last entry was on July 23, 1895.   No deceased estate was found in Orphans Court for either Isaac M. or Lydia Keepers.

     25.  John V.3 Keepers (Samuel2, John1) was born 1822 in Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA176, and died February 06, 1905 in Allegheny, PA - at the home of his son, Benjamin.177.  He married (1) Elizabeth Leasure February 1843 in New Derry, Westmoreland Co., PA.  She was born Abt. 1827178, and died Aft. April 22, 1911.  He married (2) Lizzie Mills November 09, 1876 in Sharon, PA179.  She was born Abt. 1847 in England180,181, and died June 30, 1904 in Allegheny, PA.

Notes for John V. Keepers:

In the 1880 census, New Castle, PA, the columns for birthplace of John's parents contain the phrase "don't know."

Obituary: New Castle News, Tuesday, February 7, 1905, page 3:

Captain John V. Keepers, aged 87 (sic) years, died at his home in Allegheny Monday afternoon after an illness due to the infirmities of age.  The news of his death will be received with deep regret by a large circle of friends in this city as he resided here until 17 years ago, when he left for Allegheny, and was one of the most widely known men of New Castle.  He was formerly a millwright in the Rice, Brown and Berger Rolling Mills here.

He was born in Connellsville, PA.  Captain Keepers entered the Civil War, enlisting in the three months service, after which he organized Battery B, First West Virginia Volunteers, serving as its Captain until the war ended.  He was a member of the G.A.R. and Methodist Episcopal Church of this city.  His wife preceded him in death about six months ago.  Three sons and two daughters: Benjamin, of Allegheny; George of Mount Pleasant, PA; William, of Brownsville, Tex.; Mrs. Anna McGinness (sic) and Mrs. Nettie Coburn, survive.

Note:  The Rice, Brown and Berger Rolling Mills later became part of U.S. Steel, according to the helpful librarians at New Castle.

NOTE:  It is not clear who the mother is for Birdie & Benjamin.  In her unsuccessful 1911 application for a widow's pension, Elizabeth (Leasure) Keepers lists only the four older children, and in his 1898 pension declaration, John V. Keepers only lists the same four in answer to the question, "Have you any children living?"  Benjamin, at least, was alive at the time of both applications, since he is listed in John's 1905 obituary.  These facts seem to suggest that Birdie and Benjamin may have been Lizzie (Mills) Keepers' children from a previous marriage and that they were, formally or informally, adopted by John V. Keepers.  This is speculative at this time.  [Aug. 21, 2005]

Notes for Stephen Keepers:

The parentage of this Stephen has not been firmly established.  The name Stephen and residency in Carlisle makes it highly likely that his parents are Stephen and Mary  (Delancy) Keepers , married and buried in Carlisle, PA.

In the 1850 census, Carlisle, PA, Stephen is listed at age 30 and Mary at 24.  Also in the household in the 1850 census:  Catherine Miller, 16, and John Green, 16, both born in PA.

In the 1870 census, Carlisle, PA, Stephen's wife is Virginia, age 40, in 1860  his wife was Mary, then age 36.  The youngest child in the 1860 census was 9.  A new child, Charles, age 3, is in the 1870 census, suggesting that Mary has died and Charles is the son of Stephen and Virginia.

Notes for Albert C. Keepers:

In the 1900 census, Denver, CO, Albert is listed as born in Indiana.  That's close - he was born in Ohio, probably Hamilton, Butler Co., OH (1860 census).

Also, in the household in the 1900 census is Edith Dickinson, age 12, a servant, born March 1881 in Michigan.  Since Amelia was born in Michigan, it is possible that Edith is a relative of Amelia's.

The 1910 census, Denver, CO, indicates that Amelia E. is a second wife for Albert.  It is assumed that the child Albert C. Keepers, born in CO about 1882, and listed in the 1910 census in Atlantic City, NJ, is a child of the first marriage.

Notes for Dr. Americus Columbus Keepers:

A portion from "Biographies of Westmoreland County," p. 335:

Dr. A. C. Keepers was reared at Connellsville, Pa., attended the public schools, and then learned the trade of machinist in the B. and O. car shops.  Growing tired of this labor, however, he began studying dentistry with Dr. William Mullen, of Dawson, Fayette Co., Pa., and finished with Dr. J. Crane of Newark, N.J.  After a thorough examination, he began practicing in 1873 at Dawson; removed shortly to Berlin in the adjoining county of Somerset, thence in 1876 to Latrobe, where he has continued ever since in the practice of his chosen profession.  His practice in this town has always been a large one and his work gives excellent satisfaction.  He is one of the leading dentists in the county and his success is well merited.

Dr. Keepers was elected burgess of Latrobe in 1886 on the republican ticket and served with credit to himself, satisfaction to his constituents, and profit to the borough.  He has been a member of the A. Y. M. since 1877, and of the Northwestern Masonic Aid Association of Chicago, Ill., carrying in it a $3,500 life insurance policy.  He is a leading member of the M. E. church, a genial companion, a devoted husband and father, an excellent business man, and a far-seeing public-spirited citizen.

A deed dated Aug. 14, 1911, between A. C. Keepers (unmarried) of Bayard, Grant Co., WV, and Charles M. St. Clair of Latrobe, PA, conveys two lots in Latrobe to Charles St. Clair for a sum of $4750.  The two lots were bequested to A. C. Keepers by Mary E. Keepers in her will dated April 29, 1901.

At rootsweb.com, in Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Fayette County, PA, John M. Gresham, editor, published 1889 by Gresham & Wiley, contributed by Martha Burns, page 322 cites:  Lizzie J. Cochran, wife of M. Keepers, a dentist, and living in Latrobe, PA.   This appears to be an error in the book, since the only known dentist that was a Keepers, and married to Mary Elizabeth Cochran, was A. C. Keepers.

Notes for George White Keepers:

Note:  The 1900 census, Mt. Pleasant, PA, has George listed as born in May, 1853.  I believe this is an error since the 1849 date is from his mother's widow's pension application, and she listed a daughter born in 1853.   However, George is consistent in later censuses, 1910, 1920 and 1930, and indicates a birth year of 1853 which would make him 10 years older than his wife - as opposed to 14 years older...).

George lists his occupation as "stationary engineer" with Brown & R.  I assume at this time that Brown & R is an abbreviation for Rice, Brown and Berger Rolling Mill ( a steel mill).

     114.  Anna M.4 Keepers (John V.3, Samuel2, John1) was born September 30, 1853 in Johnstown, PA.  She married Samuel K. McGinnis Abt. 1874380.  He was born 1843 in Pennsylvania381.

Notes for Anna M. Keepers:

Anna's mother was living with Anna & Samuel & family in 1880; perhaps she moved in with Anna & Samuel after her divorce in 1876.

I believe that Anna M. McGinnis, widow, 1920 census, Los Angeles, CA, is Anna M. (Keepers) McGinnis.  If so, the daughter, Anna M., born about 1885 in North Dakota, is the fourth child referred to in the 1910 census under Samuel.
