Descendants of William Keepers

Group 1:  Colonial America

Generation No. 1

     1.  William1 Keepers1,2.  He married Unknown.

Notes for William Keepers:

The Maryland archives contain a passenger list of the vessel CONSTANT FRIENDSHIP arriving in Baltimore during the year 1673.

William Keepers is listed as a passenger.

It is not yet confirmed that this man is the ancestor of the American Keepers family, but it is probable that he is the father of the William Keepers listed herein as his son.  [MERLE]

Other early American Keeper(no s) include:  from the Library of Congress, Passenger & Immigration Lists Index, vol. 2, H-O, 1991-95, Cumulated Supplements:  Jno. Keeper, Virginia, 1673 and Symond Keeper, Virginia, 1681.  The citation for these two entries was "Nugent, Nell Marion 'Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants', vol.2, 1666-1695, Virginia State Library, 1977", specifying pages 135 and 216, respectively.  It is not impossible that there is a connection relating Jno., Symond, and 'our' William.

Child of William Keepers and Unknown is:

+   2         i.    William2 Keepers, died 1757.

Generation No. 2

     2.  William2 Keepers (William1) died 17573.  He married (1) Unknown.    He married (2) Clara Tanner May 17, 1747 in Warwick, Chester County, PA.

More About William Keepers:

Probate: This William, who died in 1757, had a will that was probated in Baltimore County, MD.  Unfortunately, the intent of the will was not carried out.

Residence: Circumstances support the presumption that he resided for a time in Chester County, PA. [MERLE]

Notes for Clara Tanner:

Clara Tanner Keepers, widow, later married Phillip Sawyer. [MERLE]

Marriage Notes for William Keepers and Clara Tanner:

Note:  Lancaster Co., Church Records of the 18th Century, vol. 3, 1994, by F. Edward Wright has the marriage of Clara & William in Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, at St. James Lutheran Church.  The Delaware County Historical Society, Media, PA, lists Rev. John Casper Stoever, a Lutheran circuit rider, as the person who married William & Clara.

Generation No. 3

     3.  William3 Keepers (William2, William1) was born Bet. 1707 - 17198, and died 17709.  He married Esther Foulke 175610, daughter of Stephen Foulke.  She was born 1726, and died November 06, 182211.

Notes for William Keepers:

That this William Keepers is a son of the William Keepers who died in 1757 has not been firmly established at this time.  This connection is still speculative.

See notes for William's wife, Esther (Foulke) Keepers:

In her father's will, dated Feb. 6, 1786... "To daughter Esther, 12 [pounds] per annum while she remains a widow."

William apparently died during the Spring of 1770.  The total of his inventory of goods was valued at 15 pounds, 8 shillings.  His principle creditor was Thomas May, and it is noted: "The above sum of 15 pds., 8 sh., is charged to Wm. Keepers, Jr., & his father's account has 6 (sh?) for it (?).  Thomas May"

William died intestate.  The Administration Bond is dated April 5, 1771, and is witnessed by Joshua Williams and Michael Hopkins.  In the introduction are the descriptions: "Thomas May of the Township of Douglas in the County of Berks in the Province of Pennsylvania Iron Master, and Henry Gossler of Reading of the said county Beaker, and George Nagle of the same place Gentleman..."

Both Esther and her son William Jr. declined the administration of William's estate in favor of the principle creditor, Thomas May - dated January 22, 1771.

Letter from Amelia (Fuller) Miller, November 9, 1982, to Merle C. Keepers:  "...The Berks County William settled there in 1740 which seems to suggest that he was twenty-one, or born 1719 or earlier.  He may be the William said to have been born in 1707 or 1710. ... Working backward, William Keepers who died in 1757, as the father of William born in 1707 or 1710 or 1719, would have been born about 1686 - 1698, and could have been a son of William [1] Keepers. ..."

Notes for Joseph Keepers:

On page 126 of Martin's History of Chester, the names of both William and Joseph Keepers appear as contributors to a fund to purchase a bell for the Chester church in 1741.  It is probable that these are the brothers shown here.

+   13      ii.    Isaac Keepers, born Unknown; died Bef. 1798.

14     iii.    Martin Keepers, born Unknown.

Notes for Martin Keepers:

It has not been definitely established that Martin Keepers was the son of Joseph Keepers as shown here.  His name appears in the 1790 census of Washington County, MD.  The factors of era and area give weight to this presumption.  [MERLE]

Generation No. 4

     7.  William4 Keepers, Jr. (William3, William2, William1)17 was born August 21, 1747 in Berks County, PA18, and died November 1827.  He married Ann Hayes.  She was born Bet. 1775 - 1794, and died December 1838.

Notes for William Keepers, Jr.:

Chester County Archives:  Administrative Bond on the Estate of William Keepers filed December 17, 1827 by Joseph Keepers (son) and Jacob Chalfant, Jr., and Lawrence Butler, all of Chester County.  An accounting was filed September 25, 1828.

The inventory of goods, filed Dec. 17, 1827, totaled $ 2028.44 1/2.

The 1820 census, West Marlborough Twp., Chester Co., PA, has 4 males: 1 male, 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 18-26, and William, over 45, and 4 females: 1 female, 16-18, 2 females 18-26, and presumably, Ann, 26-45.  If correct, this would place Ann's birth after 1774.  Also, if this is the correct family, more children need to be determined.

Notes for Ann Hayes:

Ann Hayes Keepers' will, 1838, lists her children: Catharine, John, Jane, Joseph, and Elizabeth.  Also, she refers to her friend, Jacob Chalfant, Junior.  Administrators' accounting of her goods was filed February 6, 1840, totaling $ 777.43, by son-in-law Hayes Jackson, and Jacob Chalfant.

Note: Her will refers to another daughter, Ann, married to David Rubincam. The reference implies a previous marriage for Ann (Hayes) Keepers.

More About William Keepers and Ann Hayes:

Marriage: Unknown

Children of William Keepers and Ann Hayes are:

15       i.    Joseph Hayes5 Keepers, born Unknown in Chester County, PA; died December 06, 1842 in Guernsey County, Ohio.  He married Hannah P. Jordan; died April 28, 1873 in Illinois.

Notes for Joseph Hayes Keepers:

The grand-daughter of Joseph Hayes Keepers, Mary Jane (Jennie) Keepers Wheeler - Group 5: Keepers Family of Guernsey County, Ohio - writes in 1925 "Joseph Hayes Keepers was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and there lived and married Hannah P. Jordan.  They moved to western Pennsylvania about 1812 and settled in Beaver County.  About 1835 they moved to Guernsey County, Ohio.  There he was a pioneer and became a substantial farmer.  He died in Guernsey County December 6, 1842.  Hannah P. Jordan died in Illinois April 28, 1873."

The first record of the Keepers name in Guernsey County was a deed executed by Jacob Huffman in 1836 conveying 200 acres in sections 2 and 9, Jefferson Township, to Joseph Keepers for a consideration of $1,500.  This is in the vicinity of the village of Winchester, now Winterset, Ohio.

Will record B22 in the probate court of Guernsey County contains the will of Joseph Hayes Keepers which was executed September 20, 1842 and probated April 17, 1843.  The testator named his wife, Hannah, and son, William, executors.

Item 1 of the will directed the executors to hold the 200 acre farm in Jefferson Township until his youngest child should become of age and that the farm was to be 'rented out and the rent received to be used for raising the family.'  A further bequest of $1,100 was made to his wife, Hannah, and son, William,' for the express purpose of purchasing 80 acres of land we now have in contemplation and to move the family to said land until my youngest child is of lawful age.'

Item 2 of the will directs that from the proceeds of the estate each of his children be paid $100.00 on the day of his or her marriage.  These were by name:  Phoebe Ann, Israel J., Joseph, Philena, William H., Hannah, Mary Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, and Henrietta.

Item 3 of the will provided $400.00 for improvements to the 80 acre farm that was to be purchased.

Item 4 of the will bequeathed to the wife, Hannah, her lawful share of the estate when the youngest child came of age.

Item 5 of the will directed that $1,000 should be let out at interest to some safe person and secured by mortgage until the youngest child came of age.

Witnesses of the will were John Keepers, brother of Joseph Hayes Keepers, and George Washington Keepers, son of John.

Apparently pursuant to the directive to purchase a farm, records show that Hannah and William H. Keepers purchased through sheriff sale in 1844, 100 acres in sections 10 and 11 of Township 4 (Monroe Township) range 2 for the sum of $1,164.  This farm lays immediately north of the village of Birmingham, now called Milnersville.  This change is recent [MERLE, 1973] and some current maps retain the name Birmingham.

The state of Ohio depopulated the entire Jefferson Township, 36 square miles, and converted it to a lake and reforestation area, now called Salt Fork Lake.  The Keepers farm lays within this area, sections 2 and 9.

[MERLE]

Joseph Hayes Keepers is the progenitor of group 5, Guernsey County, OH.

16      ii.    Catharine Keepers24, born Unknown; died November 25, 1850 in East Marlborough, Chester County, PA25,26.

Notes for Catharine Keepers:

In the Orphans Court of Chester Co., PA, on April 30, 1851, an order was awarded in support of the petition of the heirs of Catharine Keepers for the appointment of seven men to divide and value the estate.  Catharine died intestate, unmarried, and without issue, and leaving neither father nor mother.

The relatives of Catharine named in the document are:

John Keepers (wife Mary), a brother, residing in Guernsey Co., OH;

nephews and nieces, children of Jane, a sister now deceased, who was intermarried with Jesse Woodward, to wit: Elizabeth, intermarried with John W. Blade, residing in Beaver Co., PA, Mary Ann Woodward residing in Chester Co., PA, William W. Woodward and Catharine Woodward residing in Beaver Co., PA, and Sarah Jane Woodward, a minor, who has as guardian, Thomas Jackson, both residing in Chester Co., PA;

nephews and nieces, children of Joseph Keepers, a deceased brother, to wit: Phebe Ann intermarried with James Paxton, residing in Grundy Co., IL, William H. Keepers, Sarah Jane intermarried with Ephraim Huffman, and Israel Jordan Keepers residing in Guernsey Co., OH, and Joseph Keepers, Mary Elizabeth Keepers, Hannah Maria Keepers, Henrietta Keepers and Philena Keepers, the last five named of whom are minors - residing in Guernsey Co., OH, and having Elisha Phipps as their guardian who resides in Chester Co., PA;

and leaving a sister, Elizabeth, intermarried with Hayes Jackson, residing in Chester Co., PA.

The estate included land "situate in the township of East Marlborough [Chester Co., PA], bounded by the lands of Jonathan Jackson, Jr., Benjamin Jackson and others, containing about three acres of land, more or less.."

The seven men appointed to divide and value the estate were James Jefferis, Moses Keech, Daniel Pennock, Peter Rubincam, Johnson Marshall, Jacob Entrikin, and William Chalfant.

Those living within forty miles of the court were notified by personal mail of the order, and the rest by publication in a Philadelphia newspaper for three consecutive weeks, June 13, 20, and 27, 1851.  The result of the sale is unknown to this genealogist.

+   17     iii.    Elizabeth Keepers, born 1808 in Pennsylvania.

+   18      iv.    Jane Keepers, born Unknown; died Bef. 1851.

+   19       v.    John M. Keepers, born 1792 in Pennsylvania; died May 28, 1862.

     9.  Stephen4 Keepers (William3, William2, William1) was born September 04, 175727.  He married Else Crockett December 18, 1789 in First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, PA.

Notes for Stephen Keepers:

The name, in the 1790 census, appears to be Stephan Keeper.  On the same census page are the John Crocket, George Crocket and James Crocket families.  For Stephen, the household in 1790 has 1 male under 16, 2 males over 16 and 1 female.

     11.  John4 Keepers (William3, William2, William1) was born Bef. 1770.  He married Ann Rubincamp.

Notes for John Keepers:

Believe resided in Cambria County, PA; then migrated to Guernsey County, Ohio, near Winchester.

From the 1810 census, Cambria County, PA:  John Keepers, age 26-45, with household containing 1 male < 10, 2 females < 10, and 1 female, age 26-45.

I believe this is John, son of William and Esther (Foulke) Keepers.  If so, he was born between 1765 and 1784.  [2003]

Children of John Keepers and Ann Rubincamp are:

     21       i.    Susan5 Keepers, born Bef. 1800.

23     iii.    David Keepers, born Bef. 1800.

Notes for David Keepers:

Dates of birth, marriage, death and name of wife unknown.

It is probable that David Keepers had no descendants since he was an old man when he first married according to Mary Jane (Jennie) Keepers Wheeler, Group 5, Guernsey County, Ohio.  [MERLE]

Residence: Principal place of residence:  Winchester, Ohio.  [MERLE]

     12.  Joseph Keepers4 Jr. (Joseph3 Keepers, William2, William1) was born Bef. 175730.  He married Unknown.

Notes for Joseph Keepers Jr.:

There is an entry in the Hagerstown, MD, probate court for an estate of a deceased Joseph Keepers dated June 11, 1803, but apparently no further action was taken and no administrator named.  [MERLE]

Children of Joseph Jr. and Unknown are:

     24       i.    William5 Keepers.

     25      ii.    Joseph Keepers.

     26     iii.    Mary Keepers.

     27      iv.    Eleanor Keepers.

     28       v.    Sarah Keepers.

     29      vi.    Isaac Keepers.

     30     vii.    Rachel Keepers.

     31    viii.    Kezia Keepers.

     32      ix.    Jonathon Keepers.

     13.  Isaac4 Keepers (Joseph3, William2, William1) was born Unknown, and died Bef. 1798.  He married Catherine McCardell Unknown.

Notes for Isaac Keepers:

See Group 8, Frederick Co., MD, for details regarding the descendants of Isaac & Catherine Keepers.

On March 30, 1790, Isaac Keepers was grantee (purchaser) of lot #54 Elizabeth Town, now Hagerstown, MD, the grantor being Jonathan Hager.  This deed, recorded in Hagerstown refers to Isaac Keepers as "of Frederick County."

Frederick County, MD, land records, WR 12 page 353, show that on April 13, 1794, John Calf conveyed lots 112 and 113 in Emmitsburg, MD, to Isaac Keepers for a consideration of 160 pounds.  The deed apparently was not immediately recorded and upon a later copy is entered "examined and delivered to grantee's son Isaac April 12, 1800."

On May 5, 1801, Catherine Keepers sold the Hagerstown lot, #54, to one Thomas McCardell.

Because of the notation on the deed for lots 112 and 113, it is apparent that Isaac, the senior, died sometime between 1794 and 1800.  [MERLE]

Children of Isaac Keepers and Catherine McCardell are:

     33       i.    Joseph5 Keepers.

     34      ii.    Eleanor Keepers.

     35     iii.    Mary Anne Keepers.

     36      iv.    Isaac Keepers.

Also in the household in the 1850 census:  Lucinda Pierce, age 16, born in Pennsylvania, and Robert Offley, age 55, a housepainter, born in England.  Note that Elizabeth's grand-aunt, Mary Keepers, married a Pierce.  It could be that Lucinda was a cousin of Elizabeth's.

     19.  John M.5 Keepers (William4, William3, William2, William1) was born 1792 in Pennsylvania, and died May 28, 1862.  He married Mary --.  She was born 1796 in Pennsylvania.

Notes for John M. Keepers:

The date of migration to Ohio is not known; however, in 1837, John M. Keepers purchased two tracts of 31 and 74 acres in Jefferson Township, Guernsey County, Ohio.  In 1843 he purchased lot #2, Bratton's addition in Winchester and a few years later he also acquired lot #5 of Bratton's addition and lot #30 of the original village of Winchester, now Winterset, Ohio.

His estate, administered by Paul M. McCollum, was closed June 24, 1864.  The file is not available and nothing is known of his heirs except Lewis Mifflin Keepers, the founder of the Wisconsin family.  [MERLE] [We are now expanding our knowledge of the descendants of this John. - JKK]

The 1860 Ohio census data shows John & Mary Keepers, Madison Township, Winchester, Ohio - ages 68 and 64 respectively, and both born in PA.  John's occupation is listed as "farmer", with real estate worth $2100 and personal worth of $270.

See group 2 for details on descendants of John & Mary Keepers.

Children of John Keepers and Mary -- are:

     49       i.    John Mills6 Keepers.

Notes for John Mills Keepers:

John Mills Keepers filed a pension claim in 1890 based on the fact that his deceased son, Allen, was a Civil War veteran.  In support of his claim a copy of the family bible record was included.  The birthdates of John Mills Keepers and Anna Hart Keepers are listed along with the names and dates for eleven children.  A letter accompanying the bible record states:  "To whom it may concern:-  My grandparents' family Bible, which my mother (Nancy Alvina Westfall) had was in the flood at Dayton, Ohio, last March, and, it was in such a filthy condition that I copied the family records and destroyed the Bible.  The birth dates here enclosed are exactly as they were in the family Bible.  I copied them from the Bible myself.  Yours resp., Eli Mills Westfall"

John Mills Keepers is shown as Mills Keepers in the 1979 edition of the Keepers Family Genealogy.  Based on the pension record information, I believe they are the same person.  Further, I suspect that he was named after his father, and that the "M" stands for Mills in the John M. Keepers born in 1792.  Please note Jennie Keepers Wheeler's 1925 letter in which she refers to many of her relatives, including her own father, by their middle names.  She lists brothers Mifflin, Washington, Mills, and Hayes,  in one family.  Mills and Hayes in the 1979 edition have no information concerning them.  Mifflin is Lewis Mifflin, and Washington is George Washington Keepers.  [JKK]

See Group 2, Chester County, for details on the siblings and children of this John M. Keepers.  His son, Lewis Mifflin Keepers is the progenitor of the Wisconsin branch, group 7.

     50      ii.    George Washington Keepers.

     51     iii.    Lewis Mifflin Keepers.

     52      iv.    Elizabeth (Betsy) Keepers.

     53       v.    Hayes Keepers.

     54      vi.    Katherine Keepers.

     55     vii.    Mary Jane Keepers.

Notes for Thomas Seal Jackson:

From the Chester Co., PA, Genealogical Society, Descendants of Samuel and Elizabeth (Lockard) McKeever:

They resided in Wooddale, New Castle, Delaware in 1890, per letters from A.E. Jackson to cousin G.A. Chandler, 1890.

She [Amy] was buried beside her husband at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, New Castle County, Del. on March 14, 1916. Her brother Samuel was informant for her death record.

From the Chester Co., PA, Genealogical Society, Descendants of Samuel and Elizabeth (Lockard) McKeever:

She [Amy] died at 205 W 7th Street, Wilmington, Del on 10 Mar 1916. (There is some waffling on place of birth- some census say Del, some Pa; death record says born Delaware.) Her husband preceded her in death. Witnesses to her 1881 marriage record include sister Pamelia and her husband Morris Williamson, brother S.C. McKeever, and (presumably) sister-in-law Joey W. McKeever. Her address is given as 610 E. 6th Street in Wilmington.
