Remarks:
When Samuel enlisted he was
5’ 6”, 220 lbs., blue eyes, fair hair, with fair complexion. He was a student. After the war, he worked as a journeyman printer, in a shoe
factory, as a bartender, and finally, as a watchman.
His father, William H.
Keepers, age 73, of Cincinnati, Ohio, filed an affidavit, March 15, 1893, on
Samuel’s behalf. Samuel’s sisters,
Martha R. (Burgess) and Jennie V. Baker, and his brother, Charles C. Keepers, also
filed affidavits.
Interestingly, William H.
also served as a musician -- during the Mexican war. William H. lived on to serve in the civil war and was captured at
Bull Run and Chancellorsville, and released each time.
