Remarks:
In her application, John’s
wife stated they were married on August 21, 1845, near Frankfort, Scott County,
Indiana. Her name had been Irene Hawkins, and she not been married previously,
nor did she remarry as of February 9, 1893.
She had no income, and she had a house and a lot. Her residence at the time of the application
was 1081 E. Michigan St., Indianapolis, Indiana.
Irene listed John’s
disability: chronic diarrhea and
resulting piles and disease of the stomach and liver with resulting anasarcy
(sp?). Also, he had rheumatism and
resulting disease of the heart.
A surgeon’s certificate,
dated March 1, 1882, states that John was age 60, height, 5’ 6 ˝”, weight, 167
lbs. with a fair complexion.
John’s father, Joseph, served
in the War of 1812, and his great-grandfather, Isaac, group 8, served in the
Revolutionary War.
John and Irene raised five
children, three girls and two boys. It
appears that they lived in Indiana throughout their adult lives.
