Per letter from brother Charles to cousin Orion dated 1-28-1953, wasliving in Grand Forks ND had three boys and two girls (oldest boy diedyoung)

This was written by Annabelle (Keeney) Thoreson, I received it from RayKeeney on 05 September, 1998. DLK

James Barney Keeney, born in Hendricks Co., Indiana, where the town ofRainstown is now Located. The youngest of nine children, four sisters andfour brothers. His ancestors were Irish, Scotch and English: staying inGermany for a short time.

James Barney Keeney was married first to Elizabeth Shirley, had one sonAurora. His wife died in childbirth. Them married Martha Coulter, fromPennsylvania, and they had six children. Charles, Samuel, Lloyd, AltonAnnabelle (myself) and George.

After farming in Indiana we moved to North Dakota in 1896 and rented landnear Cando, North Dakota...while there he and his second son, Charles, filed on 160 acres each, near a lake, which was later named Rock Lake, 25miles north of Cando.

They built a sod house and barn in which we lived until we could buildframe structures. They bought horses, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens.Later he purchased another 160 acres, bought a threshing rig and workedfor all the neighbors. Also had his own blacksmith shop and did theneighbors work. We had a smokehouse and cured our own meat. He had thecountry post office to which mail was delivered every other day. Farmingwas so slow those days often had to finish threshing after the snow hadfallen. He had a cook car that took care of the crews and grain haulers, taking their meals at the houses where they were working.

In winter we often had three-day blizzards and kept snow shovels in thehouse to dig our way out, as the drifts wee so high. The boys had a wireleading from the house to the barn to follow to feed the livestock. Wehad coal stoves and oil lamps. The boys would drive to the closest townfor fuel and staples, which took a day each way. The boys walking besidethe sled to keep warm. Not unusual to have 40 degrees below zerotemperatures.

Our school term was only three months, during the summer. For recreationin summer the neighbors young folks would gather at our home forbaseball, horse racing, hunting and fishing, My mother having dinnerready for everyone. We found many tomahawks and bison trails.

We had to plow firebreaks to protect the buildings from prairie fires, which we often had in dry weather.
The boys each had musical instruments and played for the country-dances,entire families attended.
We attended the Dunkard (now Brethren) services each Sunday, held in thelittle schoolhouse 2 miles from our home. Then in later years weattended the Seventh Day Adventist camp meetings, held every evening fortwo weeks in a large tent.

Mr. Jim Hill built a branch line of the Great Northern railroad, goingnorthwest out of Devil' Lake, small towns began to spring up along theline, one being Rock Lake, 2 miles from our home. Mr. Hill offered tofinance my father in building a hotel in Rock Lake, which he did, locatednear the depot. We moved into town. The train left Devil' Lake one dayand went to the end of the line, Hansboro, north of us, returning thenext day. Very few cars those days so the sales men would stop at ourhotel overnight. The cost of a meal was .50 and a room for the night.50. They called my parents "Pa" and "Ma". "Ma" always had "left-over"pie, cake, for evening lunches (free). The train crew came to the kitchenfor lunch while the train stopped. free, but anytime any of the familytook the train to Devil' Lake we were not charged a fare.

We had a very wee equipped butcher shop which the second son, Sam,operated. This served the hotel and the towns' people. We put up ice inthe winter and had an icehouse. With the advent of more cars businessbecame poor and my father sold the hotel and rented some land, back tofarming.

While in the hotel I was married to Peter Thoreson. We lived in Calvin,North Dakota. where five children were born: Majorie, Lucille, Peter JR,(passed away at the age of 8), Bradford and Samuel.

Marjorie married Forrest Stephens (2 girls. Jill and Susan).

Lucille married Nels A. Brakke (2 boys and 1 girl, Brad, Jon and Barbara).

Brad Thoreson married Betty Sue Smutz, (3 boys and 1 girl, Luanne, Randy,Douglas and Robert James).

Samuel married to Virginia Batson, (2 boys and 1 girl, Tracy, Gale Anneand Mark).

Peter Thoreson, my husband was born in 1883, died in 1951 at the age of68.
James Barney Keeney, my father was born in 1853 died 1929 at 76. Marthamy mother born in 1856, died 1942, age 86. I Annabelle was born in 1892.

My maternal grandfather was Charles Gearld Keeney. I have information onhis spouse and their descendants, Sydney B. Keeney' spouse (they had nochildren), Zorah Keeney' spouse and descendants. Alva A. Keeney moved toCA, and we do not know anything about him.

I noticed that you didn' have a date of death for my Charles FranklinKeeney. I don' either. I have found Charles Franklin Keeney living inOklahoma City, OK Territory, on the 1890 OK Territory Census. Living withhim and his family was his nephew, Albert Keeney (1858 - ). I found MaryAlice Holloway Keeney in the 1900 OK Territory Census, listing herself asa widow. The family story told to my mother about what happened toCharles Franklin was that he left to go back north to sell some horses, and he
never returned. Albert could have been with him on that trip. The tripwas probably between the time Charles' last child, Alva A., was born in1896 and 1900. We do not know when or where he died or is buried yet.

__ from bio in "History of Chicago by Andreas, p. 454:
"Charles P. Keeney, an enterprising young real estate dealer in Chicago,is a native of Des Moines, Iowa. His father, Charles Keeney, was a farmerand a brick-maker, and owned a portion of the original town-site of DesMoines. Charles P. Keeney was educated in the primary branches in DesMoines and, in September, 1871, came to Chicago to prepare himself forcollege. His brother, however, offerrred him so many inducements to joinwith him in the real estate business, that he left Chicago University inthe junior year, before he had completed the course. In 1876, thebrothers went to Kansas, and J.F.Keeney laid out a town in Trego County, called Wa Keeney. There the younger brother remained two years, carryingon a grain business and agricultural implement depot, lumber yard andgeneral store. They returned in 1879, and have since continued in thereal estate business, although they have formed no regular partnership.Since their return, they have purchased one hundred and sixty acresnorthwest of the city, have platted it and are rapidly improving it. Thetract is known as the Garfield subdivision. Since that time they haveadded about one hundred and sixty acres more in other additions. MrKeeney was married, in 1875, to Miss Viola P. Barton, of Saratoga, NY.Her parents settled here in 1857. They have two children--Viola F. andGlennie I."

He was a land developer with his brothers. (also a preacher and farmer -notes in CPG files. same source says family came from Orange County, NYvia South Carolina.) Developed WaKeeney, Kansas in 1880, moved toChicago, and then, in 1887, to Florida (for his health). He and Violawere married in Chicago at the home of her mother and stepfather, DanielBarclay. In WaKeeney, he operated the general store and was postmaster.(Appointed postmaster April 19, 1879. "No pains have been spared to makethe Post Office first class." (WaKeeney World)
The first business house in WaKeeney was erected by C.P. Keeney at thefoot of Franklin Street (Main) and was a two-story frame building.WaKeeney Centennial brochure CPG5. (a general store)
6 Sep 1879 - "Charlie Keeney is putting in 65 acres of wheat in hiswoodland area. He has over 100 acres broken. (WaKeeney World) Spentlots of time in Chicago with his wife. Performance as postmasterquestioned because of many, long absences during which he "left boys todo a man' work".
3 Jan 1880 WaKeeney World - Party at Oakes House for New Years Eve.Forty-five came masked, others not. Dancing and social past times until11 pm. Supper. Dancing until 2 am. Thoroughly enjoyable. Generosity ofMr. C.P. Keeney.
10 Jan 1880 - New postmaster, Mr. Henry.
The first families here (WaKeeney) were English. Mr. Keeney brought histwo brothers John and Charles. During (1877) supplies were hauled to thetown on a flat-bed car behind a hand-car from the town of Hays until astore was opened by Charles Keeney. from a Local History presented to theTrego County Historical Society. Spring 1973. CPG5

In 1886, had real estate offices at 94 Washington Street,Chicago.(Humboldt Park area.) "J.F. and C.P. Keeney offered 150 finecottages suitable for workers. The cottages came with a guarantee thatshould the purchaser die before completing the contract, his wife orheirs would get the deed to the property free of all encumbrances as wellas all money previously paid to the developers." Chicago History Mag.,Fall 1978. pp145,6 CPG5. (Clipping in FKG scrapbook gives address, in1875, at 102 Washington St.)

Worked with his brother James Franklin (Frank) who was developer ionChicago. 1871 developed South Evanston, 1870 Ravenswood. Also HumboldtPark area. James Keeney, son of D.F. Keeney worked with DF Keeney andSon, also prominent developers in Chicago.

obit - from a Tarpon Springs paper - VFKGould scrapbook - CPG5: "Thelate Charles P. Keeney was born at DesMoines, Iowa upon the first day ofthe year 1849. A farmer' son, he helped his father at home until hewent to the Chicago University, where he pursued the prescribed course. He was married December 25, 1875 to Viola P. Barton, in whom he found adevoted wife and a courageous comrade. Mr. Keeney entered into the realestate business in Chicago in 1874, where he remained until 1877, when hewent with his wife to Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Keeney were the first familyto settle in the town of Wa Keeney, the present county seat of TregoCounty. There he remained until 1880, when he returned to Chicago, andresumed the real-estate business in partnership with his brother, J.F.Keeney. The firm did a large and increasing business, until Mr. C.P.Keeney' failing health caused him to come to Florida in the winter of1887. Of Mr. Keeney' career in Tarpon Springs the readers of our paperare already aware. His business activity and the public spirit hemanifested were only limited by his ever failing health. It has been thegeneral feeling here that Mr. Keeney' illness alone prevented him frombecoming the most potent factor in the development of Tarpon Springs, asit was, he accomplished much. A year ago, Mr. Keeney purchased the brickblock on Tarpon Avenue, built by Rev. H. D. Webster, and a handsome grovein the sapling woods. With the intention of giving our industriouscolored citizens a fair show in the world, Mr. Keeney cut up intobuilding lots an eligible piece of property on Safford Ave; and hisdealings with purchasers have ever been most generous and considerate.During the past winter Mr. Keeney has built upon property owned by him onSpring Bayou the most imposing and artistic residence ever erected inTarpon Springs. This will continue to be occupied by his widow anddaughters, Frank and Glennie, who it is a pleasure to say, will maketheir permanent home in Tarpon Springs." More about what an upstandingman he was, and with a devoted wife.

"His father, Charles Keeney, was a native of Virginia and his mother wasa North Carolina woman -- her name was Mary Beck. Both came very earlyinto Indiana, married and settled near Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, where James was born on September 15, 1840. In 1845, the family moved toIowa, and settled near Des Moines. His father was an active and ambitiousbusiness man, and while in Indiana owned considerable land, mills, brickyards, etc and was able, when he went to Iowa, to purchase a large tractof land in Polk County. He laid out the village of Avon, on the DesMoines River, about six miles southeast of the city of Des Moines. It waslocated on his own land and became a prosperous town.

from Centennial history of Polk Co., by Dixon, p. 53:
"The village of Avon was laid out by Charles Keeney, August 1st , 1856,and for a time it had quite rapid growth, situated, as it was, on theline of the State Road, to which we have referred. In 1859, it had anaccession of twenty houses, and appeared to be on the full tide ofprosperity. A large hotel, several stor es, and a church building, belonging to the United Brethren, were amaong the improvements of thatyear. ... Jonathan Keeney kept store...Nearness to Des Moines andremoteness from the station on the I.&W.R.R. kept it from growing withmuch rapidity in these later times.
