STEELE Family*
Related Surnames

It is not known with certainty from where hailed the South Carolina
Steeles, but there were evidently three groups who came to the state before 1800:
- Direct from Ireland into the port of Charleston:
John Ireland Steele (c1752-c1830) settled in Fairfield County
with his wife, Margaret, and children. A different John Steele born c1722 married
Lydia Guerry about 1748 in Charleston County and probably had several children including
Peter Henry Steele (c1748-1806)
- Another group came from Delaware with settlement in Pendleton
District: Isaac Steele moved from Delaware to the Pendleton District of South
Carolina and there he died in 1803, leaving descendants.
- Thirdly, those from Augusta County, Virginia:
Thomas Morehead Steele is the progenitor for this group. He was born
about 1740 (probably in VA) and died along the Lynches river in SC around the time
of the American Revolution. He married Mary Barnes and had four children: Margaret,
Robert, John and Thomas. My direct line is from the son, John Steele, who settled
along the Pee Dee river..
Notes:
The 1870 Marion County census lists a Henry Steel (1835-?), a watchmaker, from Russia,
with his wife Ricca (1850-?). It is not known if they had children and/or remained
in the area, but the couple is probably not related to the many Steeles who resided
along the Pee Dee river
