The first Poston in America appears to have been a John Poston from Shopshire, England
who settled in Pennsylvania as early as the 1720s. This John Poston also appears
to have had the following children: Robert, John II, Anthony and Ann. (all apparently
born in Pennsylvania.) Documents from Chester County, PA indicate that the son, John
Poston and his wife Margaret, left Pennsylvania about 1766 heading south with children,
John III. and Anthony. It is hypothesized that this particular Poston family settled
in North Carolina.
Oral History on the Poston family says that the Pee Dee group began with two brothers
that came down from Cumberland, North Carolina around the 1770s. Documented evidence
seems to point to John Poston III and probably his brother, Anthony, being in the
Marion District of South Carolina as early as 1781.
- John Poston III married Rebecca Baldridge, had seven children and probably others: Thomas, John, James, Francis, Josiah and two daughters, names not known.
- Anthony Poston married Elizabeth and had at least these children: Mary and Hugh
Thus from these brothers sprang the many Postons along the Pee Dee River....
