| The earliest South Carolina reference I have found for the Perritt family is a Frances Perritt who witnessed a land deed in Prince Frederick Parish (later Marion District) for a William Newman in 1739. He proved and witnessed deed with a William Keefe. In 1889, exactly 150 years later in Marion District, William A. Keeffe married Telitha Perritt., the daughter of John E. Perritt, son of : |
David Perritt Sr. of Marion District, SC died in 1872 at the age of 91. (See link above for an abstract of his estate as it appeared in Marion County Probate records). David Perritt Sr's father is not certain; some researchers say William Perritt and others Needham Perritt. It appears David Perritt married twice, first to Sally Bryant daughter of Jesse Bryant, and second to Martha Ann (Unknown Maiden). He had a total of 14 children, most of which were from first marriage, with the youngest three probably from second marriage. David Perritt, Sr. was a Captain in the War of 1812. I believe this David, Sr. is referred to in W. W. Sellers' History of Marion County published in 1902. Here's a quote from this book:
Another numerous family of the county is the Perritt family. Of the old Perritts, there were four brothers known to the writer, viz: David, Joseph, Jesse and John David. David only has left posterity; he married a Miss Smith, a sister of old Mr. Hugh Smith, (I believe Mr. Sellers mistakenly listed wife here; David, Sr's wife's name should be Sally Bryant). The old man Perritt raised a family, mostly sons, David B, Needham, William, Bennett, Jesse, John E. and Asa and one daughter, if no more. (A daughters name may have been Charity)
