McWhite Family

Back to Keefe lineage

The information I have on the McWhite family of SC is very limited, and I would appreciate any help with this line. Also see
White Family page.

Other's research suggests that at least some of the Pee Dee McWhites are descendants of a Thomas and Mary Musselwhite
of Robeson County, North Carolina; however, I do not have much detail on this possibility. I have found a couple references to a Joshua Musselwhite (c1761-?) in Marion land deeds during the early 1800s. He is suppose to be the son of Jesse Musselwhite who was a son to the aforementioned Thomas and Mary Musselwhite. Some of Joshua's children are listed on the LDS Family Search site as shortening their surname to McWhite. The following sons of Joshua Musselwhite are also listed on the LDS site as residents of Marion District: John McWhite, Lewis McWhite, and Stephen McWhite. Another son, Josiah, is still listed as Musselwhite.

I have not found any McWhites in the SC census records until 1850, and when looking through the 1850 census index for South Carolina I came up with only one McWhite family, but they were in the Marion District:

Alexander McWhite, age 35 born in SC
Mary McWhite, (wife) age 27
William McWhite, (son) age 1
William Flowers, age 23
(also in household)

The Keeffe/McWhite family connection includes a Bryan McWhite (1835-1899) who married Martha Ann Keeffe (1858-1936). Both are buried at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Pamplico, SC.
