The book, History of Marion County, by W. W. Sellers published c1901 is a good read and includes some valuable information about Marion and Florence county families; however, in this book, the author goes off on so many tangents about the McMillan clan that it's hard to keep track of just who is who. Mr. Sellers even has a John McMillan marrying his sister. I realize some may have married relatives back then, but it was usually a cousin.

Here's a little of what Sellers has to say about this family (the following is paraphrased):

The early progenitors of thes Marion County McMillans were a family of McMillans and Pattersons, who emigrated from Scotland before the Revolutionary War settling in present day Robeson county, NC. The older children of an old man McMillan were born in Scotland and the younger ones in North Carolina. Malcolm was the name of the child who became the progenitor for the McMillans about Mullins. This Malcolm McMillan was 3 years old when his family came to America. He married Flora Patterson and to them were born four sons: Neill, Daniel, John, and Malcolm; and four daughters: Jane, Mary, Margaret, and Flora. Daniel, John and Malcolm supposedly moved west while Neill remained in SC and married Sarah Wilson.

The following son referred to in Sellers' book is supposedly one of the seven children of Malcolm McMillan and Elizabeth Williamson:

"Of the sons, John married Miss Sarah McIntyre, daughter of John B. McIntyre, and grand-daughter of old Dougald Mcintyre"

The McMillan family of interest to me includes a Dougald McMillan, Sr who died in 1825. The Marion County Probate records lists Dougald McMillan's wife and six minor children. From census and probate records I have put together this family for Dougald McMillan, Sr:
