KENNEDY Family*
(Related Surnames; Coleman, Haynes, Keefe, Moore, Timmons, Turner)
The Kennedy surname appears to be of Irish heritage and originally spelled with the “O” prefix as O’Kennedy or O’Canady. There were evidently quite a few of the Kennedy clan who were early South Carolina settlers. Probably more than one family of Kennedys immigrated from Ireland to South Carolina in the 1730s and 1740s initially settling around the then named Williamsburg township.
Individual Kennedys who appeared in the earliest records of Williamsburg include: Samuel Kennedy, 1737; John Kennedy, 1759; Thomas Kennedy, 1767; James Kennedy, 1775; Joseph Kennedy, 1780; and Stephen Kennedy, 1782.
The earliest Kennedy family along the Pee Dee river this researcher has found are: Bryan and Mary Kennedy with children Richard, Mary and James This family was living in the Prince Frederick Parish (Georgetown District) as early as 1736. The son, James, in this family may have been the James Kennedy who appears in the Georgetown District census of 1790; however this has not been documented.
