The Haynes are an old English clan of distinction. A family of this surname was living in London during most of the 17th century; then during the days of Cromwell (18th century), these Haynes sought refuge in Holland. It is recorded that two Haynes brothers came from Amersterdam, Holland to Botetort, Virginia in the early 1700s. One of the brothers is thought to have been Thomas Haynes whose wife was Martha Jones from the Parish of Dunston in London. This Thomas and Martha Haynes had ten children, (the older probably born in London, and the rest in Vriginia): Herbert, Anthony, Thomas, Jr, Richard, Andrew, Elizabeth, Martha, Mary, Draughton? and William. From these children descended the many Haynes of Vriginia; some of their descendants have been documented as moving to North Carolina and others to Mississippi.
It is not for certain that the Pee Dee Haynes are descended from the Virginia Haynes, and indeed an Isaac Haynes was in South Carolina even before the ones in Virginia. Isaac Haynes' wife was Mary (Deane?). Isaac Haynes left a will dated 1717 in Colleton County naming the following children: John, Joseph, Matthew, Abraham, Isaac Jr, Edward, Hannah and Susannah.
The Pee Dee progenitor, Willis Haynes, has uncertain ancestry. This Willis Haynes was born about the year 1780, and one of his grandsons said he was a stage coach driver in North Carolina. A most prolific individual in this line was James Willis Haynes (son of Willis Haynes) of Marion District who was married twice and had at least seventeen children. From these children descended many Haynes family members along the Pee Dee river.

There is an unconfirmed report of a Willis Haynes in North Carolina before the American
Revolution.
