The Gregg family hailed originally from Scotland, but not long after the time of Cromwell (17th century), many of this surname removed from the North of Scotland to Londonderry, Ireland. They were part of the large group known as the Scotch-Irish that began immigrating to America in the 1730s.
The Greggs first appear in Pee Dee records on July 3, 1752. A John Gregg petitioned the Colonial Council of South Carolina for two plots of 500 acres each, which had been previously surveyed for a John Atkins(Askins?) in c1735, but had evidently never been granted. John Gregg eventually obtained grants for 1,350 acres. (Note: At about the same time a Dr. Gregg petitioned for land a little to the south of John Gregg’s grant near the fork of Black river and Pee Dee. This Dr. Gregg’s relation to the aforesaid John Gregg is not known).
John Gregg did come with a brother named Joseph, and both appear to have initially settled among the Scotch-Irish of Williamsburg. It is from these two brothers, John and Joseph that the Gregg descendancy along the Pee Dee began. (There was also another brother named Hugh, and a sister named Jennet).
Notes:
There was an Edward Gregg in early records who.petitioned for land grant in August 1752 in what became Fairfield County, SC. This Edward Gregg states in Petition that he has brought his family from western Pennsylvania. It is not known if he was related to Greggs of Pee Dee, but it appears doubtful.
